    3/12 - Late night server 1 action

I just wanted to write an AAR on the games that took place after server 1 was transformed back into vanilla sunday night. What looked like a dead server at 10:30pm CT kept me playing until 2AM CT. I had a blast.

It started out with 4 people on server one right after the server switched back into vanilla. Not much came about so a decision was made to try a pub raid. We had 6 people meet up on teamspeak for a potential raid but after trying a few servers with little enjoyment whiskeysix noticed server one had another 6 or so people playing in it. A quick decision was made to join the server so a decent game could get going. The round we got in on was Mashtuur. That round was decent...no special rules just normal 16 player vanilla. I think the server topped out at right around 16 people exactly...

After Mashtuur though was when the fun began imo. Next map was Songhua. The player population was down to about 12 and after a bit of boring whack a mole flag hopping I tried to get a better game going. After some discussion we decided to have only one flag be in play. I had seen this done before with success on TG so I wanted to replicate this. For Songhua the flag chosen was the North Island. In my head it looked like a solid choice with multiple entry points and lots of surrounding vegetation to conceal movements. In execution it proved exactly that.

My squad got to defend the flag first and over the next maybe 30 minutes we faced constant attacks from various directions and through different methods. We lost the flag a few times but almost always got it back within a minute or so. Very solid defense. Various attack strategies I saw were full on infantry assaults, a two boat combo, quick buggy entry, apc - buggy combo, multiple direction fireteams(?) and others. Perhaps it was a little unfair though....I had robocop with me I had a lot of fun directing him around when needed and also joking around with him through the commo rose system. Here are two specific instances:

    - When the PLA attempted a APC - buggy combo from the east I called it out and told robo to lay some mines down. I'm sure he would have done that anyway but still it was cool because immediately he was like 'Roger that' and got two mine kills about 5 seconds later.

    - Another time they came in with the two boats and after spotting them robo grabs the buggy and procedes to chase them down/slaughter them as they tried to flank around the north to the west side. After taking out the whole squad by himself I joked that robo didn't want to share and he responds 'Sorry chief'. Me: 'OK' . robo: 'Thanks. I owe you one' Ok maybe it didn't go exactly like that but many silly attempts at convos did. hehe

So anyway here are the charts to Songhua.

Next map up was Dailan and the few left(8 I think) decided to continue the one flag gameplay. Our initial mistake was using armor but we corrected that after a bit. About half way through we were down to 3 vs 2 since it was getting late and a few had to take off. Being on the side with 3 and realizing the obvious imbalance I decided to take up a spectator's view and let a 2 on 2 battle occur over the Power Plant flag. I placed myself way up at the top of a smokestack as a sniper and got to watch the action through my scope like I was in commander mode. Watching the 2 on 2 action was pretty cool from the position I had. Over and over the PLA team(Fuzzy, Turbinator) tried to take the flag as a sniper-medic combo. They would move cautiously and once the sniper took one enemy down they would move in and try to take the flag. The USMC team(morethanbem, Freddysmackhard) held strong though. It wasn't until about the two minute warning that the PLA finally captured the flag after numerous attempts that resulted in their deaths as the flag was neutral. Here are two screens I took of the action.

I talked with morethanben afterwards and he agreed this was a lot of fun. We talked about attempting this more often in the afterhours when TG is typically considered 'dead'. I think really all ya need for a good game is about 4 per side but as shown even 2 can work. Good games to everyone who played!(see Songhua chart)

Many many moments of fun with such little player count, who would of known? This is what TG is all about right here.

    Excellent AA Mantis...

I agree about trying to do this sort of thing more often. TG is the best server around but if it does have one downside, it would be that it usually gets abandoned fairly early (well, early for me). But last night, I think I had more fun then I ever have had that late at night/early in the morning on BF2.
