    Tue 8/1 -- Oman -- 4-man squads

Late in the evening we came upon the Gulf of Oman (32p) with just over thirty players. We were MEC. I quickly saw that the team was going down the route of two large squads with one very small squad. I wasn't quite sure how we would organize to capture and defend three flags. So I stepped up to the CO chair to see what I can do.

Right away I had issued the command to break down into four-man squads. I had a vision.... a vision that took a while to be realized. The squads weren't breaking down quite right. I'd get some five/six man squads and some three man squads. We were quickly down by over 100 tickets and struggling to keep two flags.

Eventually the squads finally boiled down to my desired four man squads. I now had four of them. This gave me the tools I needed to work. We had a bit of a shuffle on flags, gaining one here, losing one there... as I tried to get us in position. I figured a four man squad was all that was needed to defend a flag. This gave me two squads to defend and two to assault.

We were then able to capture the three flags for bleed. Now the plan was to keep three squads on defense and use the fourth as reinforcements or to keep constant pressure on the USMC. This worked well. I think we actually held four of the five flags for the remainder of the map... with only very small instances of one going neutral. Each squad did great at communicating, following orders, and executing.

Oh, and I can't forget my fighter pilot. I think I started with bleak and ended with phoenixfire. Both did a tremendous job and responding to threats and saved other squads multiple times.

I took a screenshot shortly before we had the squads just right.... but I think this represents the names pretty well.

That was some great commanding, asch. I kinda can understand how that round went for ya. Sometimes for the first half ya really cant get control of the flow of battle, but then ya get a significant break, more control of the squads, and everything goes your way. I was curious how the idea of having more flexible as opposed to strong squads would work, and it definatly worked wonders the second half of the match.

My squad at first was me, sordavie, tybalt, and evaunt (sp). Evaunt was an incredible medic who rivals evil lemon for best medic ever. Just look at his teamwork score for that round, and factor in that he only had 3 guys around him to heal/revive. We were defending the river fort against attacks MUCH larger than us that involved armor as well. We knocked back everything and only let the flag go neutral once. As well as that, we kept the arty down pretty well considering our strength, or lack there of, in numbers. Best part was when both artys were down. I put 2 C4 packs on each anyway, and waited for engys to repair them. Sure enough, icky and norcal were soon flying all the way back to the carrier.'

EDIT: Special kudos to both anneles and pjanorex for volunteering to leave the squad and join another one.

Sorry about the 2 vs 1 jet situation. Meant to remove them but typed the command wrong. Once I realized the error I felt bad about removing them plus I figured Duke or someone would tear up our F35's in the Mig anyway. Fortunately they showed some restraint when things were looking one sided. Also to whiskey wondering why the attack choppers were out again...well you have to understand the situation. We always take out the bomber...so normally(when someone like me doesn't screw up) we also remove the fighters so its not 2 vs 1 in the jets. Then of course we can't have attack choppers roaming around a wide open map with no counter(jets).

From the opposing commanders view I was also a bit disorganized squad wise. Squads were changing all over place and a few were one man squads. I tried to convince the one man squads to join others but they never did. However they did follow all my orders so I was happy to just deal with what I had. Things were working very nice for a while but in the end we just got beat because suddenly my larger squads had major difficulty retaking flags we had lost. Kudos to the MEC defense at Hotel and River Fort in the last third of the round. Despite having the manpower advantage with jet support my two larger squads just couldn't seem to take back those flags. Ah well...we tried our best.

I think USMC would have won easily if their jets hadn't restrained themselves the way they did (using guns mostly). But still, it was annoying having two jets sweeping your flag with cannons constantly and freely without any fear of being taken down (for a good portion of the round, in the middle, we had a pilot who went 0-12).

I noticed the super medic on your side, too! Must have been a revive-a-thon for them!

I tried my best, but that was an off round for me due to the mood I was in. I think I ended up like 4: 26 or something pitiful like that.

Regarding the squad organization, I think the two teams switched situations during the round. I believe USMC started off pretty well organized, with two large squads (5 each), a small helicopter squad, and a jet squad. But, as the round went on, we ended up having an extra 2 or 3 small/one-man squads that really seemed to have no objective. We even had one alone in a dedicated mic squad. I guess he never joined any of the other squads to see if they had mics.

All in all, a great comeback by Asch and the guys. I applaud you and your perserverance!

P.S. - I noticed A LOT of new people were getting kicked for being squadless. Is there anyway to make the squad message much more visible? Maybe SM's should call attention to the kick warnings so SL's can present invites. Let's get to showing people the TG way!

yeah i was in the US jet squad for that map, we never used bombs until the last ten or so minutes when we woke up and realized we were losing, and for a little while we decided to try missles on ground targets only(only thing i managed to hit was friendly arty and got a team damage warning!) It was nice to see phoinexfire grab the enemy jet later in the game, it was odd flying around in teh f35 and not getting shot out of the air every five minutes All in all it was a great round, its fun coordinating with the other pilot to try and take out an APC or a tank in one or two passes with the cannon

Sorry if the USMC jets were dominating - I'm still a really, really, really new pilot (and on a keyboard/mouse no less) and I can't compete with someone like Arf.

I was in a small squad with Drunkage (?) and started to grow with the addition of Bodofuko, icky and a couple others. Mantis had us attack Santa's flag for most of the round at the river fort. We ended up throwing bodies towards the flag. At one point I told Mantis that my squad just couldn't take the flag- his response: "norcal- that's the least defended map" lol. My apologies to my squad mates, between the jet bombs, Asch's well timed arties and the menace that Santa's small squad presented, I just couldn't stay alive long enough to provide an adequate spawn point for any of you. Nice defense guys. You had me crackin' up when you blew that Arty Santa. Icky quietly said: "Santa must've waited a while to do that" lol.

Oh and kudos to both Sordavie and Amosely for being fantastic Squad leaders for Sharqi and Karkland, respectively. We had some intense standoffs at our defensive positions on both maps. It was hot and these two guys managed to stay alive when the heat was cooking.

We had some good strafing action going on in that game; a couple times we had perfect perpendicular angles of fire (and only one collision!). In the late game the smaller squads made much harder targets. From the air it really looked like they were coming from everywhere which made it very difficult to do anything decisive with the jets.

I thought the enemy jet pilots did pretty well considering the circumstances.

That was an incredible amount of fun. Great times defending River Fort for ever and ever. Kudos to Santa and of course evaunit the ubermedic.

The rivalry with you guys at Olive Hill was really fun too!

    Re: Tue 8/1 -- Oman -- 4-man squads

I was mic-less last night so decided to snipe...

I don't usually snipe because a) I don't usually do well and b) it can be boring. Well last night changed all that - man what a blast that was! Must have been something in the water because I was actually hitting most of what I shot at! I pretty much spent the whole round at olive hill and tried supporting the attacks at the River Fort and Rock Fort. I ended up with something like 23 kills and ~21 kill assists - nothing for the record books, but by FAR the best round sniping I've ever had. I'd like to think it helped keep opfor's head down at those forts, but honestly, I'm not sure it did....

Yeah, mantis, having fighters in the air, armor on the ground, and helo's removed didn't make sense to me... fortunately icky was in my squad at the time and answered the question over voip: "it was a mistake".

(....and for the record, <puts on pilot hat> jet's usually don't do much to deter attack helo's. Of course there are those rounds where duke or eggplant or snail or someone of that ilk decides to make you their primary target - that's bad news for you ...but on most maps, it's .50 cals, AA missles, and trees that account for 95% of chopper deaths.)

    Absolutely!!

The first part of the round I had a 3 man squad (RangerSix and I think Heyob, before he left for the night) and just couldn't seem to get anything going...the guys were great, but we'd get wiped out and have to start fresh...It seemed every time I reported into Asch it was to tell him that weren't going to get to so & so 'cause we're all dead.

At one point the 3 of us were defending village Fortification and were being seriously harrassed by snipers. One of the snipers (whose name I forget, although I offered a bounty of beer for his head later on) had his sights camped on one of the spawn points at the CP...which I unfortunatley spawned into repeatedly, only to be shot immediately. In anger I went out and knifed one of the snipers that was harrassing us...not the best SL move, but most satisfying.

Once Asch's strategy started to take effect the situation changed dramatically...that and he sent some guys over to my squad (RangerSix, Tau_Neutrino, xprmnt526, awildstar)!!

It definitely felt like the initiative was ours after that...despite the pounding from the air.

    GG.

    Cheers.

That game was hilarious. When Pheonix left the USMC to help out the MEC, it tore our 3-man squad apart and instantly gave the MEC total air domination. I didn't get to see the rest of the map after that, but it was obvious it wasn't going to be pretty for those who were left. It was really too bad that the jets were in.
    Peace through fear... since 1947!
