Flanking Attack Demo AAR Video: Spies 3/15

Two Fireteam Attack: Tactical Demo Video

This is a four minute video giving a minimal demonstration of two fireteams attacking a flag from two different flanks. This record also demostrates a squad leader retreat, althought the retreat failed by not being executed quickly enough, and the SL (myself) failed to ‘advance to the rear’ to a sufficiently safe distance. This was a critical error – an SL retreat must move the SL to a sufficiently safe distance or it simply brings the fight along with him (as in this instance). This in turn leaves no time or space for safely regrouping the squad.

Not seen in this video was the successful movement of the squad out of a ‘hot’ flag and deep into enemy territory. My sargent, Sgt. Fetterman, provided fine leadership of Alpha fireteam and clearly understood the principles of fireteam leadership and covert movement into enemy territory.

Again, I am not satisfied with this video as a training tool. Consider it a rough draft.

This will give you a larger 640x480 screen.

    Thanks to my squad members:

    TG Sgt. Fetterman
    KillaKilla
    Smurfly

    GeneralCondom
    Isaac

The squad performed very well, but we were overwhelmed by the enemy army which contained an overwhelming majority of TG players.

    Enjoy.

Since that was me who discovered you (@2:53 video time), I'll give you my view. That tactic wasn't gonna work against us on that map. I figured that a squad leader was out there since we kept killing the same guys. There is no concealment for you on that map even and I have no problem seeing the Ukraine uniforms either. The smoke you dropped in front of you when I found you gave me the concealment to reload and kill a third of your squad in the next shot after I missed with the first. I couldn't even see you, I just fired at the last known position into the smoke. Most likely yall would have killed me if the smoke wasn't there while I was reloading. Really it would have been better for you to stand your ground and fight instead of running because we weren't gonna let you run away to live and fight another day (excluding the fact that there is nowhere to hide on that map). We have specially trained dogs to flush out and run down errant squad leaders.

Interesting analysis, but in the end the tactic worked well enough for my squad to be just about the only one to take and hold any flag for any length of time that round. And yes, we were doomed without enough allied squads hanging around to defend. But I disagree with your analysis regarding the simple smoke and retreat tactic. A retreat can have a much higher probability of success than an attack against a superior force, so I find your logic on that point flawed. One must measure the available tactics against ones strengths and weakness, the terran, the allied forces (weak, then at best), and so forth. I did not fail to use a reasonable tactic, I failed to execute the tactic at the correct time.

Smoke ALWAYS works as a 'double-edged sword', so the logic for or against its use depends on many more factors than is accounted for in your analysis.

Had I retreated in a more timely fashion I doubt that you would have had any reason to believe I was in the fight at all, thus your assumptions assume too much :-)

    Nonetheless,

Cheers, and thanks for taking the time to view the video and comment! Makes it all worth while.

Cool, I took out all of the people on the flag after the first time you turned it neutral.

I seem to recall saying these words sometime around then:
"They're all down. Now they are going to respawn and wipe out squad 4 at Camp."
    (where "they" are the 33rd)

I don't think there was any doubt in the first place.

Where were you retreating to anyway? Kind of hard to stay alive when you are out of bounds.

Maybe if you had an actual chance to retreat somewhere. But since you ran straight out of bounds that pretty much says you were between a rock and a hard place. Better to take some enemies down and maybe survive the first assualt than get shot in the back.

Dont know about anyone else, but I use a simple formula:
The same 5 guys who reappear 30 secs after you've killed them = 1 squadleader who I haven't killed yet.
I didn't find you because I was out taking a leisurely midnight stroll around the perimeter.

I think it's a good video or those starting out and I can see different things that I would have done differently. Any smart defending squad will figure out what direction the enemy is coming from. From that point on, it's like following a trail of breadcrumbs back to the source.

Things I attempt to do is to rotate my position around the flag while each wave hits. So while I lose the advantage of surprise (They know an SL is out there) I have gained an advantage of knowing where my enemy is and pulled them off the flag and they still don't know where I am. This allows you to either go for the enemy first, or go for the flag which is now likely open.

I liken being a good squad leader to being a quarterback for the Detroit Lions. You call the plays, direct the offense, react to pressure, watch the offense move downfield and then you fire at the defenders.

You can do all that and STILL have time to relax and watch the Superbowl on TV.

Predicting Lucky's location when defending a flag on infantry maps has become a game within the game. I think all of the regulars have a pretty good handle on it by now too.

"I see Lucky circling to the west side."

Keep thinking that you do have it figured out as we didn't move between the trenches and UCB to attack. Still, it does make for an interesting cat and mouse game for sure.

Well maybe we got it wrong, but we still found you exactly where we expected to find you.

Your squad gave me a couple of my 8 deaths and plenty of my 58 kills. Regardless, keep guessing and keeping becoming a statistic.
