AAR Video: Ltttle Bird Goes Down in Flames, Apr 3
Up the River
Dateline: April 3, 2007.
TG’s embedded videographer and amateur goat herder, E-Male, reporting from the front lines of HyperReality.
While embedded with Grunt’s squad, I captured a Growler Gun Cam video record of a ‘little bird’ helicopter attacking our boat. TG’s Battlerecorder provided footage of the same incident from the third-person point of view. New in this video is my use of three different recordings from TG's BattleRecorder, which makes for a total of four cameras catching the action -- from my point of view, from behind the heli, in front of the heli, and beside the heli. My favorite sequence is when one camera captures the heli going down across the bridge, then the next camera getting it following action frm 'behind' the bridge as the heli falls into the water and explodes.

For a better viewing experience, download and play.
This will give you a larger 640x480 screen.
Enjoy.Last edited by E-Male; 04-04-2007 at 11:44 PM.

That is one awesome vid.I laughed loud watching it.It's really fun to watch your cyberself in action. I found myself calling my coworkers over to show it off....they were like "uh...that's nice...how old are you"...obviously they are not gamers....

Re: AAR Video: Ltttle Goes Down in Flames, Apr 3
Thanks, Grunt.
It is interesting, this experience of the extension of the self into the virtual realm ('cyberspace') and reliving that experience through video records.
I wonder how many others have that sense of reliving the moments captured in thses videos not as 'there I am at my keyboard playing the game' so much as 'there I am IN that boat as these things happen around me.'
Not that we completely fool ourselves and loose ourselves, but that we extend ourselves in some fashion into the medium itself. Not sure he meant it this way, but brings to mind Marshall McLuhan's notion of media as an 'extension' of man.
Certainly, ego-investment and strong identification takes place between fantasy game players (such as WoW) and their characters. This, curiously enough, is an underdeveloped aspect of BF2 and many FPS games. No real opportunities to customize the details of the character within the game. On the other hand, we all have our real-world personalities projected via VOIP. It may be the case that the reliance on VOIP in BF2 makes our 'characters', such as 'E-Male' much less a fantasy role then a simply project of the player's personality. Would be interesting to study the way different types of online games allow for 'playing' with identity.

Re: AAR Video: Ltttle Goes Down in Flames, Apr 3
I was in that boat

Problem is I can't relive it as for some reason the screen doesn't show a streamer, and the link wont download (media player says it's not a video file).
Since my knowledge doesn't go far - can anyone help figure a reason, like am I missing something basic?
P.s: I can see youtube and so forth just not this :/

Sorry, I can't help. Wish I could, as more would see the video. The file does download, quite bizarre that it does not work for you. These are the same .flv files as YouTube uses. So there is some weird coding issue, browser issue, or server issue that is beyond my knowledge.

Very good. Like the anecdotal nature of it.
That "air" song is pretty disturbing though; way too cute for a war. The multiple cam technique is definitely THE way to show top action moments. What it's like to play online games as a grown-up:http://s3.amazonaws.com/theoatmeal-i...e_gaming/1.jpg

Thanks, Al. The tune got in entirely by accident. I was listening to Groove Salad over Shoutcast radio on Winamp while running Fraps on top of Battledirector and it recorded the tune I was listening to at the time (man, what a load of geek speak...).
I went to quite a bit of trouble to cut and past ambient sounds from the game and get the timing right in most of the edits. Makes for nice realism. I rather like the contrast between the violence and the uber-mellow tune. I really like the transition to all mellow tunes with no ambient sound (from in game) after the heli explodes in the water. At that point it is a parody of the old Miami Vice -- slick machines and cool tunes racing into the sunset.

What would Mcluhan think nowadays I wonder? He was really out there. Amazing stuff this communication revolution. I studied three or four of his books from the sixties. Your remark spurred me to google him for old times sake. I found a website run by his estate that offered the brief bio linked here: http://www.marshallmcluhan.com/gordon.html I forgot he was a fellow Canadian. I thought I'd post the link for some other TGers who may not have heard about this guy.
I always get excited to watch for myself on your clips. It does feel strange to identify as if I'm watching home movies. Hey, I'll admit that I like to see my name (cyber name) flash on screen. It's fun.
You are on the right track with voip I think. A human voice brings something to the gameplay that no computer could ever replicate. Each nuance of language or inflection of voice brings urgency to the equation and creates a truly immersive experience. I have no interest to play BF2 without voip, especially since I joined TG. I'd hazard a guess that this will continue and only expand in the future.
I had a Tiger Woods Golf game that allowed you to paste your own face onto a cyber character. It also allowed you to customize clothing of many sorts and varieties, hats, glasses, rings, tattoos, hair, nose, eyebrows, chin, biceps...etc you get the picture. That was a kick. $20 bucks usd would give you hours of fun if you wanted to check it out. I didn't ever paste my face in and I lost interest in the game because I couldn't figure out how to play online. Then I found TG and BF2 and now that game is a memory.
I always thought online golf would be fun at TG. Someone raised the issue a few months back but received a tepid response. A shame really. We have some unique characters at TG and I'd like to see dozens of home made cyber characters created by TGers...that'd be fun.Last edited by Grunt 70; 04-06-2007 at 02:09 AM.

As always, an excellent vid
I agree with your comments about Voip, i never really used it in Vanilla BF2, but since joining TG, and playing with you guys, i couldn't imagine playing without it. Each person has an online persona, and maybe its just me, but you can almost picture the person if you spend long enough playing with them in squads?
Also agree with grunts comments about seeing yourself in a video, i too consider it as 'me' on the screen, not me at a keyboard. The only vid i have saw myself in was the one where coridon blows up a tank on Basrah, and im only in it for a brief second, but its strangely thrilling to see 'me'. Also, found it wierd, as was playing as insurgents, and i KNOW what all the kits look like (balaclava on Spec Ops etc), but was still strange to see 'me' wearing a head veil...just not what i expected, but then what DID i expect?.....

Mmmmm, Groove Salad....
That video was most excellent! Littlebird takes a missile up the pooper then sails gracefully over the bridge, only to splash down and explode on the other side.
