Three Helo Disaster
Three Helicopter Disaster
A few nights ago I was squad leading the 1stMIP during a rather epic round. Three times we used a helicopter for transport. I made a few command errors.
In the first instance I ordered insertion into too hot a zone, and as you will see, the result was not pretty. We came under immediate fire so I ordered the squad to smoke the Heli and ordered the pilot to get in the air, but not soon enough.
In the second instance, the pilot was flying too low and hit trees. In the final instance I ordered the pilot to an LZ that was between two enemy flags, when I had a much safer flank available, and we were hit by anti-air missles.
Lessons:
Use more caution when transporting a full squad. Take time to do it right, pick the safest possible landing zone, and watch your pilot closely.
