I've played a lot of BF2... a LOT, but tonight's last 4 games with my squad were probably the best I've ever seen 6 men do together, and definitely the most fun I've had in a long while.
Prior to EJOD starting, we decided as a squad that we would hit them fast with a H-AT rush up the middle from the MEC side. We spawned SL and HAT and started moving a jeep up the middle with 2 riflemen, and 2 medics delaying spawn. We moved to the west side of ruin and eliminated a full USA jeep deploying at the gas station from around 400m. We placed a quick rally near the main road, and Rifleman1 and Medic1 took up rooftop overlook just north of Ruin Flag spotting an enemy humvee moving to the east hills. Our HAT kit relocated east, and destroyed this second full USA humvee coming through the east wall gap of ruin. With no shot on APC and gas station capped by USA I ordered a preemptive attack on Ruin flag.
5 grenades and 2 flashbangs lead our assault on the small flag radius. Medic2 had upgraded to support kit and led our breech. With support and medic assigned inside-LEFT and rifleman/medic1 assigned inside-RIGHT, we blasted into the flag eliminating 5 infantry blinded by flash. I got into trouble sweeping behind the small shed, killing 2 infantry and running out of bullets just as an enemy medic switched back to his M16 to fire at me. To my good fortune, our support gunner was coming around the corner just in time to save me from losing my head.
Our H-AT'er all the while had been on top of the roof north of Ruin near the tunnel firing missle after missle on every single armor piece leaving gas station area. He pulled ammo from our vodnik and had 3 ammo bags at his feet from our riflemen and couldn't seem to reload fast enough to kill all of the targets in range.
After clearing the flag, our squad retreated north in a bounding overwatch maneuver to rejoin the HAT on the roof top. We spotted out 2 enemy tanks that were just spawning in 10 minutes into the game and he eliminated one with 2 amazing shots from around 300m. He also eliminated a commander truck coming from gas station, leaving over 2 dozen USA troops with no where to spawn but back home.
The rest of our team had capped west city with no resistance, and had a minor struggle taking east city as an APC had somehow evaded us and gotten through the desert. Our commander did an excellent job of bringing our armor to the front lines and they helped eliminate the second US tank.
Feeling the adrenaline, I quickly gathered my team into our vodnik and attempted to flank far west into the desert to attack the gas station. To our supprise we ran directly into an enemy APC that was probably trying to flank out just like we were. I slammed on the breaks and through smoke, hoping our HAT would have time to fire a round and save us. 15 seconds of getting pounded, hiding behind a flimsy Vodnik and smoke elapsed...with the sound of a HAT round whistling over my head toward the apc...followed by a loud BOOM. The sound of SAND exploding in front of the apc! Our HAT had been taken out just as he fired the shot, and my squad was soon decimated by HEAT rounds as our vodnik exploded and we had no cover to hide behind.
We respawned on a perfectly-timed Commander Truck that was moving directly for gas station flag that our team had moved ahead and capped. We no sooner jumped out of the thing to find a supply crate that I had requested 10 minutes ago laying right on the ground by us and the same APC we were killed by heading directly for us. Our HAT man was able to request the same kit he lost just in time to load a round and blast the enemy APC as he barrelled north through the desert and nearly spotted us a second time. I was absolutely amazed at the luck of having such a perfect spawn+supplies+the enemy that had just killed us dead at my feet!
Feeling very very lucky at this point, I asked the commander if we could take his truck to flank the USA main, and he not only said yes, but he said he would join us! We drove to the west edge of the map again, and fortunately did not run into any enemy APC's this time. We moved south and prepared to hit the USA main from the south-west corner of the map, well out of view through fog of war. Because of the diesel engine, the enemy knew we were coming somewhere from the west, and spotted us from their tallest building rooftop and opened up all hell on us with LAT kits, small arms fire, and a m-249 mg! I heard body after body fall off the back of my truck as I drove like a drunk to get south of their flag under cover of the small building complex there. By certain luck, both myself and the commander survived! Arriving behind the building south of the USA tank spawns with just enough cover to hide the big truck. My dead squadmates spawned in engineer and repaired our burning truck and helped the CO establish a firebase right outside their main there. I've never seen that done before, it was madness! My team grabbed medic & grenadier kits and fired so much smoke that other squads that spawned in could practically walk to the USA flag unseen. We helped the CO establish a strong hold by repelling several USA attackers. He placed an Anti-Air gun just in time for one of my squad members to jump on the thing while it was burning in order to blow up a full USA humvee that was attempting an escape out to the eastern desert. Our team armor had pushed up to attack the USA main from the north, and we helped close the gap from the south, trapping the USA team inside their building complex. They put up a good last stand using their rooftops and grenades wisely, but ultimately fell to our overwhelming manpower.
In my time playing PRM, I have never seen such an aggressive TEAM of 32 players work so well together. I credit the commander for relaying many spots to our HAT soldier (32 kills in first 10 minutes), and for moving squads into the front lines to fill at critical times. It was one of those perfect games where everything just came together. I honestly wouldn't believe what happened had I not been there myself and seen the dead bodies with my own eyes.
Eight months later I finally received the reports from three peer-reviews on my latest manuscript with the University of Toronto Press. This will be my third book with the same press and the second...
