Why the sniper kit is underrated.
This weekend I joined the PR server about halfway through a game on Al Kufrah Oilfield and decided to grab a sniper kit to have some fun. I moved out on foot and made my way over to the storage facility which was coming under attack and took up position in a far off oil tower that still had an unobstructed view of the northern fence to begin spotting the incoming infantry for the commander and the defenders. I began picking off whatever infantry I had a clean shot on which happened to be just about all of them. I picked off at least 3 organized squads that I had pinned down (its wonderful when you are shooting from the direction the enemy thinks they have cover from) and even disabled a tank that had stopped to repair (I killed the crewmen).
So next time you say that the sniper kit is useless, just remember this screenshot. (I tried to take out at the rounds end but for some reason it didn't come up. I finished with a score of 700+ 29 kills 0 deaths and first place on MEC, 2nd overall)

By the way, it appears you get tons of points as a sniper if you kill the commander.

Re: Why the sniper kit is underrated.
I have to get my DVD drive working again and pop on here and really rock the sniper kits. I haven't touched a PR sniper rifle at all yet, they're always taken. 2142 draw distances are such a joke, I need to make my long distance shots actually be long distance!

And thus the reason I hate the new big desert maps. It's a sniper and tanker paradise.

That isnt my favourite map but it does have the newer longer view distance to it and is pretty good looking.
Sniper kits arent that hard to get, they can be fairly random and even though I prefer marksman I sometimes get sniper when I ask without having to wait or anything.
Being squad leader amplifys your score too I noticed

Re: Why the sniper kit is underrated.
I know that in my squads I say NO SNIPERS at the start of each round!!! I dislike them for the most part because they don't usually help out the squad. With that said, on most maps I don't like to utilize them, but there are times when I will ask someone to go marksmen (or if no marksman, sniper) for long distance cover.
BUT, if you join my squad and I tell you which kits I want and when I look and see you as a sniper, expect a swiff kick to the curb

I'm an expert sniper/spotter. Ask me anytime to join with you...
But never run a sniper squad over 2 or 3 guys please...

Honestly, I wanted just to have a spotter sniper combo but its too hard to have just 2 people in your squad when dealing with pubbies.

Re: Why the sniper kit is underrated.
Nah, not really. If you have a commander to designate 1 sniper to your squad, you can really get a sniper much easier than usual. It can still be very frustrating...
But really, 6 guys...It doesn't work. Ever. If they're even within 100 m of you, it's gonna give you away usually. I get alot of people following me when I'm off on my lonesome...I know exactly what they're doing... They figure they'll pick it up off me after I die. Not only does it give me away, but it annoys me. If I'm out in the woods, I dont want some noob out with me slamming down the q button and other voice comms just waiting to give me away.
the point of being a sniper isn't for the KDR. While a good KDR is expected, its to take out targets of opportunity for the TEAM. See a SL? Kill him. Then kill the medic rushing to him. Then bail.
And that's where alot of noobs seem to argue with me. I don't waste shots. I don't fire if they're looking for me. I don't fire if they're looking in my direction, usually. I almost always choose targets by priority. I don't mind waiting for 5 mins for a hiding SL to come out from cover if I have to.
Alot of "snipers" are still in BF2 mode. KILL KILL KILL! A sniper in PR should actually be spending ALOT of time in team chat, relying information to SL's in the area. I've gone 37-0 and then I've gone 4-0, for the whole round.
It depends on the round.
I believe the Sniper rifle is a TEAM asset. Therefore, it's more dangerous to give it to the enemy then it is to not have one. So when you pick up a sniper, keep in mind that you WILL be on the receiving end if they pick it up off your body.
I could go on for days.
To sum it up...I dislike alot of players who play as sniper.

Re: Why the sniper kit is underrated.
Yeah, tell me about it. I tried to make a sniper squad on Zatar because Armor-whoring is boring. Well, we spawn in a little far from the flag, and right away the sniper kits are gone. Awesome. Some douchebags grabbed them, leaving me and my squad stuck with DMR rifles at 600m ranges. 10 minutes later I check the scoreboard, and guess what? Those snipers: not one kill combined. Oh, they had died once or twice, but no kills. At that point I was so infuriated about the douchebags on our team wasting assets and generally being stupid that I disconnected, my other option being to TK everyone in sight. So yeah, I'm still kinda pissed off about that. I know there is no rule saying you HAVE to respect specialty squads, but come on, if you see that there is a squad dedicating themselves to a particular asset or role, give them first dibs on those assets.
In closing, I wish people weren't such smacktards.playing off the TG server feels like we're playing 2142 on easy mode~Fehmart

Re: Why the sniper kit is underrated.
I am with you Skud, sniper is a real battlefield asset and when deployed effectively it can be lethal to the enemy. BUT it must be coordinated with command otherwise, pretty useless. On maps like Mestia, the overlook capability of the Sniper is SOO valuable, and then add in the ability to support squads with a timely kill...the point is that if you get one kill a round you had success as a sniper...if you had no kills but relayed tactical inbound information to you team, success. I dont mind spotting and would team up with you anytime...I think Crawling eye and I played 20 min of mestia without only a couple of kills...but we did keep the invisible wall up for anyone trying to get recon on munitions....

Re: Why the sniper kit is underrated.
Exactly, that is the sniper I always take out in the tower when he shoots my engineer of my tank
.
I don't think snipers are at all effective on kuffrah, unless they remove the spotting feature altogether. I just spot in the general area, mark with a hammer, then instruct my gunner to take a heat round out, before looking at the sniper. I like to see them flyyyyy.****** Fabulous under Fire ******
