Re: Impressions?
I do not like this mod at all!
That being said, it was well made. Beautiful graphics, weapons, and stationary objects. It was made with well intentions and I can see this mod becoming popular for Tactical Gamer. But I am personally sick of WW2 games and this is too close to DoD. I don't like the maps...at all. I hate the fact that they made this mod strictly about the North African Campaign. It leaves no room for other map types (i.e Jungle, Forest, urban). The Armor is WAY too dominating on some maps. I can see where one would accidentally spawn camp a flag. The Anti-Tank measures really need some improvement. A Anti-Tank Rifle...come on now. The uniforms look too much alike...and without the ability to spot, this it is extremely hard not to go a round with a TK. The whole "whack 'a' mole" of flags is really quite irritating also. They need to implement an AAS like in PR.
I am not saying that this mod shouldn't be at TG, I am just saying that it is not for me. I hope that this won't discourage others from giving it a shot.

Re: Impressions?
Got a few maps in this morning...
First impressions when starting to play:
- Hmm, I´ve done this before! Ah, that right, CoD2 Multiplayer and players running around in a circle around the map capping flags.
- Minimap needs to be reworked, or why not remove it?
- The German and British uniforms are way too alike. Experienced a bundle of TK's [my fault and others].
- The compass needs some attention...
- Perhaps it is just me, but the maps I played did not really allow tactics all that much.
- Have to lay down in order to fire the MG. Two thumbs up for that - I like!
My thoughts directly after logging off was that it might take some effort by the community to keep this mod active, since I felt that it has a far to great risk of being a lot of smacktards-rounds. I was not overly impressed by it, but that might very well change when I get a couple of more hours into it. I guess that it depends on the company. How about thinking PW-night etc?
But chosing FH2, as it stands now, over PR is not likely for me.Last edited by Steiner; 12-15-2007 at 06:16 AM.

Re: Impressions?
This mod gave me a headache after I logged off. It really is terrible in certain parts. I will give it another go tomorrow.

Re: Impressions?
As someone who has played Forgotten Hope for about 4 years, I believe that FH2 was a great first release. Yes, there are some issues with it, and the PR crowd will detest it. Do not get me wrong, you'll see me often on the PR server, however, it is a different game. I enjoy PR immensely. I enjoy POE2 immensely. I also enjoy FH2 immensely.
Fh2 has a lot more in common with POE2 than it does with PR. I can say from experience that it remains faithful to FH1. The content (IE: Tanks, Vehicles, Statics, Map Atmosphere, Sound, Animations, Skins, Overall feel) is EXCELLENT. It is simply excellent. The polish on this mod is amazing.
I understand that some of you might not like the gameplay. Some maps will require some time to settle (Tobruk, Alam Hafla) and I point you to Crimea and snake eyes (Though they aren't as bad as Snake eyes) on POE2. Those maps seemed utterly hopeless for the attackers, but now, especially on Crimea, I see the USMC getting a foothold often. I understand that there is limited Infantry ability to take out tanks. The Anti-Tank rifle is next to useless against heavier tanks. However, tank-on-tank battles (El-Alamein, Aberdeen) are amazing.
A fundamental change in MENTALITY is needed for PR players to enjoy this mod, just as a change of mentality is needed for Vanilla guys to enjoy PR. The "Infantry Only" squad works sometimes, but not often. More often than not, the squad has to be centered around tanks with infantry riding on top of the tanks as FH2 has Inf slots on tanks. Specialty Armour squads who do not work with infantry will also not work. This differs from PR where squads normally have exclusive roles.
Also, Dirtboy, do not be disheartened. FH2 is a TOTAL WW2 mod. The African Theatre was only the FIRST release. FH1 had all theatres (North Africa, Pacific, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Atlantic, Italy). It had 60+ maps, 5+ factions and 250+ vehicles. It was a mammoth. A lot of those other theatres are in development.
The content, in terms of graphics, atmosphere, etc, is amazing and second to none in my opinion. Then again, I maybe biased. I urge all of you at TG to play the mod for a while. I beleive it fits the TG type of game. Approach the game from a new angle. Do not compare it to PR, as it is not PR. I beseech you not to be hasty in passing your verdict.
That is all.

Re: Impressions?
Just installed, about to go and play! Will (hopefully) put first impressions up here afterwards.
EDIT: Impressions.
Played for about 15 mins, saw TopCat in my fireteam doing his 'homework'.
I didn't have much of a problem with uniforms, but the spotting thing was very annoying, and I hate the gun sway/floaty thing. When the map ended (Mutra or something), after the next map had loaded the server crashed, so I went to play some singleplayer. It was VERY laggy, I don't know why as I can play BF2 on nearly all highest graphic settings. Strangely, multiplayer wasnt laggy at all. I may go play again, or just play PR.Last edited by westyfield; 12-15-2007 at 09:07 AM.

Re: Impressions?
Initial impression is that it is a nice change of pace...fun to play and explore...tank usage requires advancing cautiously.

Re: Impressions?
I love it, glad i waited 2 yrs for it. Don't try comparing this to PR because its two totally different things. PR = small time tactics but its still fun FH2 = Full scale battle of WW2. Like someone else said you'll have to re adjust. Weapons and graphics play fine. I think the server should use the option of 90 sec squad time kick as in other servers to encourage better play, just my two cents

Re: Impressions?
Forgotten Hope was a bit of a letdown for me. I mean, I am used to submersible cars, parachutes with afterburners, artillery hand guns and semi-automatic guns giving off farting noises. It's nothing like Department Store Battles!

Re: Impressions?
ok, incoming noob opinion. I was more overwhelmed in FH2 than playing PR for the first time.
everything looked cool, and visually it appeared to be WWII. I only jumped into one map, joined Khareus' squad... maybe I should've done more research, but the kits confused me. I'm all for realism, but is it bad to use some consistent kit names? (I know thats weak, but I was really confused)
SL K was doing as you'd expect he would, a smashing job giving instructions. I just couldn't follow, cause I couldn't get my head around things. At one point myself and squad mate were in a tented bunker firing on enemies. Someone in the squad noticed the map view, and a British troop was in the same tent firing on our squad, he wasn't more than 5 feet to my left... never saw him, or when I did I thought he was friendly. I'm just terrible without red name tags on enemies.
after that map, and about 5 mins in a squad with a SL in name only, I disco'd and went to play POE.Park Bench
Doing laps of Lumber Yard, waiting impatiently for another POE Scrim.

Re: Impressions?
Keep in mind, 1624 players are playing FH2 right now. It is over-run by...well....idiots. Give it a few weeks. Let the "n00b-syndrome" wear off as Vanilla players go back to Vanilla.

Re: Impressions?
I find it pretty good for a first release some problems here or there but nothing that can't be ironed out

Re: Impressions?
My perspective:
Graphics: Impressive. Great looking new statics, the vehicles look great. They obviously spent considerable time making the game look awesome and they succeeded! For a 2+ year-old engine, the FH2 team managed to breath some fresh air into the BF2 environment. As mentioned numerous times before, the one drawback has to be the closeness in the appearance of the British and German troops. Players new to the mod will be tk'ing quite a bit, and after several hours yesterday I still had the occasional tk (my apologies to my victims).
Maps: I like some better than others. Due to the theme of the mod, mappers are limited as to what they can do, as the North Africa campaign was obviously contested in mostly desert environment. To remain true to history, they obviously wanted to represent historical battles within the game. A lot of the desert maps are larger maps, but not so large as to be "Kashan" large, meaning you either want a ride somewhere or spend the rest of the round walking. My biggest complaint is that they had more AAS2-style maps.
Gameplay: There's no getting around it - it is next to impossible to destroy German tanks as infantry. The AT "kit" is essentially worthless. Sticky-bombs are great, but perhaps some type of vehicle damage system needs to be incorporated in future releases so that they have more of an effect and make the kit a little more useful. Last night I hit a Panzer III with 3 sticky bombs and it still was up and running! The obvious downside to this is that tanks will sit near spawn points and rape with abandon. I experienced this a great deal yesterday - tanks sitting near a flag but not capping with the sole intent of racking up the kills. Not having a medic kit is a problem. I understand that there weren't shock paddles in WWII, but there were still field medics. Either add a medic kit (limited), or give everyone 2 field dressings. The FH2 team went for realism on a lot of different levels, but I think that has caused a couple of weaknesses in gameplay that will hopefully be addressed through feedback from the community.
[EDIT] One thing I just remembered: If we have to go prone to fire some weapons, put down mines, etc., then please don't show us "hit" indicators on the cross-hairs! The point is you can't take weapon usage to the utmost of realism and then give us a nice "X" on the crosshairs to indicate a hit.[/EDIT]
I do find the mod to have a lot of potential, especially here at TG. Due to the one-shot kill of most weapons and the lack of a medic, it definitely seems suited for tactical gameplay. We'll have to find a balance with rules that are enforceable (don't know how to handle the tank spawn-raping problem), but it could work and would provide a nice alternative to PoE2 and PR.
For a first release, I think it is excellent technically, but I'm concerned about the feasibility of the mod making it here at TG.

Re: Impressions?
My first impression was that I was pretty frustrated with the mod. A lot of spawn camping and TKing, most of which was not intentional. The maps are HUGE, with little cover between CPs on the 3 maps I played (Tobruk, Supercharge and something else). I was frustrated with the AT rifle, though the sticky bombs are very satisfyingly powered. I also see a big potential for 1-2 pixel snipe fests at medium to long range.
It was pretty though. Big, beautiful maps and nicely designed CPs. But from what I saw it definitely didn't seem very infantry friendly. I may give it a few more shots but my first impression was not great.
