This has a lot to do with it. My old CPU was a P4 2.0 with 1 gig of RAM, a 7600GS video and load times were 2-3 minutes. My new CPU is a Duo-core 3.0 with 4 gigs of RAM and a 8800GT and my load times are about 10-15 seconds. There are many reasons for load times, but CPU power has a lot to do with it. I am making an assumption that you have a fast internet connection and firewall adjusted correctly.

Re: How to load maps faster

When I first had BF2 loaded, maps took about 30 seconds with 2gigs RAM, and XP and BF2 loaded on a Raptor. Now 3 years later I'm up to about 3 minutes, so stuff on the disk and other chokepoints develop over time.

There are hundreds of things that can slow it down that individually are negligible, but all together make it slow. In my case, all I can do is put in many hours of tracking down all the crap or I could just reinstall XP and BF2...

and I'm too lazy/busy for that nonsense.

It doesn't take all that much time to reinstall XP. Due to a series of screw-ups, (and me wanting to experiment) I reinstalled XP several times over the course of the summer. Through this practice, I reduced the time it takes me to reinstall XP to around 2 and a half hours, I think.

All you have to do, really, is just make sure that you have all the patches and files for the games you want to install, and the drivers for your video card and sound card backed up beforehand.

For the XP updates like service pack 2, look at Autopatcher (It seems the original site was shut down by Microsoft, but the newest version (august 2007) is on softpedia).

I think you'd also find this article helpful: on lifehacker, theres an article called "How to set up your new computer". It should be on the front page.

Strip Windows down to the bare essentials to help it run faster. I will not post the link but there is a program that will allow you to strip XP down fairly easy or even Vista.

Someone I am sure will post whether or not it may be legal.

Use a Harddrive with a minimal of 10,000 And if its over 60 Gigs then partition it in 60 gig sizes . Mine loads fast compared to most ..

Re: How to load maps faster

The logocache can become fat if you play on lots of different servers or flick through the server browser a lot. This is where all those server images get stored, like this one for example:

Another great way to reduce load times is to make sure your hard disk is defragmented, BF2 maps are quite large and loading them will speed up if the data files are contiguous.
