Ranked Vanilla Server.

The Tactical Gamer admin team is discussing the possibility of hosting a ranked BF2v server. Is this something that you all are interested in? Please vote accordingly and give us some feedback/input.

Thanks,

Dirt

Hell yes. I'm sick of all of the pub servers. Bunch of bunnyhopping crackheads on there, I swear.

Re: Ranked Vanilla Server.

I think that a vanilla server would provide us with a place to kick back some and enjoy the ability to run and gun, blow off a little steam and still maintain a tactical environment. Some people dont like PR, some dont like PoE, but it all comes from a common root in vanilla.

On the other side, with the amount of noobishness and smacktardery that is so prevalent on vanilla servers, I fear that a popular server would be nearly impossible to police with our current admin staff. Dont get me wrong, I am in no way doubting their abilities. We have the finest admin staff in the gaming world and nobody could ask for more than the colossal efforts they put forward. But vanilla is a whole different beast. We have such a large responsible playerbase in both PoE and PR that the server is largely self-policing at times. People report infractions, help new players and make the rules clear to anyone who is foggy on them. I'm sure the admin staff appreciates this.

However, remember that both of these communities are mod communities that hold less than 3% of the total BF2 playerbase across all PR and PoE2 servers. That means that 97% of smacktards and idiots are in the vanilla ranks. We would have to watch the vanilla server like hawks 24/7. This would be a very daunting task, even for the admin staff we have. We'd probably have to look seriously at expanding the ranks by a large degree.

Also, we would have to be careful with any ruleset we decided to impose, as that too could effect the difficulty of policing the server.

If we can figure out the solutions to those problems, I think it'd be a great idea.

Re: Ranked Vanilla Server.

You may want to consider splitting the second option into two distinct options. Playing out of curiosity implies playing once, playing occasionally can mean a couple times a week, once a week, a few nights every other week, etc.

Re: Ranked Vanilla Server.

I would love to see a vBF2 server return to TG in one form or another, be it ranked, unranked, or a weekly event like we used to run. A ranked server would bring in a lot of play that goes along with the ranked aspect, point farming, camping etc. It also provides the population needed to keep TGers playing though. I would suggest first trying an unranked server and see how the population holds.

Also, what about considering weekly events like Root used to run. It used to be something like Special Forces one Friday, Project Reality the next and I don't recall what the third was, maybe vanilla or Tacmod. Maybe try something like that and see if we can get a good showing before full scale?

I would love to see a full time unranked vanilla server and I would play on it everyday probably. Depending on how a ranked server would play out (can TG run its mods and scripts on a ranked server????) I would probably play on it every night but not as much as the unranked though, quality dependent.

Re: Ranked Vanilla Server.

While the thought of an unranked vanilla server sounds nice, it simply wouldn't get any traffic. Our only true option for a populated server is if it's ranked. For example, our original Vanilla server was great, but the fact that it wasn't ranked gave it an early demise once the game started becoming less popular and the new mods came out.

It depends on the TG members’ willingness to seed the server and draw in players. BF2 at TG did not start with a full server of veteran guys playing. It was built up because there were great squad leaders willing to preach the TG way. Vanilla has a massive number of players compared to the mods. If enough people here want the server and are willing to open up their squads to new players, I think there could be resurgence.

I don't think it should be excluded as an option.

Furthermore, check out some of the rules for ranked servers...

sv.numPlayersNeededToStart = (6 for maxPlayers 16, 10 for 32, 10 for 64)
sv.spawnTime 15
sv.manDownTime 15
sv.ticketRatio 100
sv.teamRatioPercent 100

Ranked servers must be entirely "pure" with no customization outside of the default content shipped by DICE/EA.
I think this will drive away a lot of TGers from the server if we have to put that in place.

Re: Ranked Vanilla Server.

It is true that the modifications we once ran on our old Vanilla server would not be possible with a ranked server. Not to say this is necessarily a terrible thing, I've never played 2142 but our server seems to run fine without any server-side modifications.

I think it is a fairly big deal. TG modded vanilla with all its settings, scripts, and server side changes was very different from how regular ranked vanilla played out. The nostalgia and what we are used to just won't be there without this. No 20 second spawn time, small number of tickets, (are we allowed to run our no-squad kick script?), having to wait around for people to join to get a game started, removing the chopper from Sharqi, etc. That loses a lot of interest from me.

2142, correct me if I am wrong, is the only flavor TG hosts right now and has always been running without server side mods. BF2 is different, all these settings are changed in our mods and when we used to play vanilla. I think this will turn off a lot of people that still play BF2 here.

Re: Ranked Vanilla Server.

According to Mantis:
Quote:
- Spawn time locked at 15secs
- Ticket ratio locked at 100% - rounds will be quick
- Lack of majority bleed on a lot of maps(e.g. Karkand, Sharqi)
- Sharqi will have attack choppers
- no more autosizer although I would assume on the fly maplist changes could be done
I do believe we will still have the 2 minute time at the beginning of each round and the Squad Kick will be enabled.

Good news on the squad kick then, I thought I read long ago that it was not allowed to force players into squads on ranked servers.

Re: Ranked Vanilla Server.

I play as mach as I can on the 2142 server. If the admin's are diligent you can keep a vanilla server running well with all the noobs and others. We get a lot of people who start out new to the TG way but in the end the majority stays and follows the rules.

Re: Ranked Vanilla Server.

There's no way I'd play vanilla again although I wasn't around for the original unranked TG version of it.

I share the concern about the admin requirement not to mention the fact it could possibly draw players away from POE2 which isn't exactly running with a full server these days.

I'd give it a go, but 2142 and PR is where my heart is. vBF2 might bring back some bad memories...

How about the possibility that it could in fact bring in more new players for PoE2 and other mods?
