Re: Sniping....

Isn't locational damage supported? WHat about headshots?

FWIW, I've seen a pair of snipers on the roof of the warehouse do quite a bit of damage. Maybe they were calling out targets and concentrating their fire... 2 shots, 1 kill.

Re: Sniping....

I have been playing as a sniper 90% of the time. I keep up with the team and as we near an objective specified by the SL, I drop back and cover them as they approach, always keeping up and within support distance. It takes some getting used to but so far I'm preferring the USMC rifle.

There's no leading as I understand it. I read around at a couple BF2 forums and got it confirmed. Where you shoot is "where you hit." Like all shots fired, it seems there's somewhat of "chance factor."

I made a shot from on top of the warehouse (railroad track building far west side) and dropped a running target coming from the middle shore base in one shot. Now I can rarely pull that off, but it comes down to timing the running speed and just clicking when the enter the crosshair.

Accross the map (ie long long long distances), snipers, at least at this point, are more like mosquitos, which may be carrying the West Nile Virus, otherwise just pests. They may shoot you from one end of the map to the other, but even with a registered hit, the large plus in distance, equals lessened damage to the target, taking off very little life. I have shot a person about 6-7 times from totally accross the map and they're fine. Now like that running headshot, that was the west nile virus mosquito, it just so happens that that bite was deadly/lethal and thus ended the guy's life. Normally though it's just a minor annoyance that far away.

Right now snipers are effective only if played that way, not just because they got a big scope and fluffy camo. I really enjoy the class and if allowed by my SL, will continue to pick it top choice as long as it suits.

Geez guys, I'm going to have to start typing my responses in Word and spell checking so that I can make it through the gauntlet of this double occupation workforce: english teachers by day, soldiers by night :P

Re: Sniping....

Last night, got more time in with the sniper....yep, this is my class. Not so great at close combat with the silenced 9mm, but the SVD is tha shizzle. There is time to get better...

Long range is problematic, but doable. Aiming a little higher than your target brings the bullets on point, although the USMC's single shot bolt action is definitely more difficult to get the kill than the SVD.

You can provide alot of cover and intel to your team just by using the scope. If you are a sniper, you should be feeding your SL with info. A simple APC rolling W, squad advancing from rails, etc., can really help achieving an objective.

This is not a prestige class, I think. It's about providing useful information to the team, and mitigating long range threats. You aren't going to get big numbers, but you will be an asset if you play the class right.

Don't hide under any trains if I'm on the rooftop.

Re: Sniping....

As a sniper, don't forget to use your anti-personnel mines. VERY valuable. For example, if you're going up a roof, drop one at the base of the ladder. Also helpful when you're up on a hill in the grass to drop a few near you to help protect you from being flanked and killed with a knife (very embarrasing).

Re: Sniping....

Yea, I like playing the role but am worried that others may not think I am valuable as I am not actually capping flags. I do like the role though but it just takes one man away from the fight.
