Your video card performance in BF2

So I've been running my oc'd 9700 128mb card for a few years now, and I'm wondering if I should bother upgrading. I didn't need to for HL2 and Doom3, both played quite well.

I get OK performance at medium detail settings in BF2, (the ingame FPS monitor hovers around 42 fps) At low quality I exceed 100 fps. The ingame FPS numbers are confusing though, because it has 2 numbers like this: 42.6 / 22.8 or whatever, I don't know which number my actual frame rate is. I assume the first one.

One thing I've noticed with the video settings on my brother's x800 Pro, is that there's not a whole lot of difference between low, med, and high. I dont think anyone is going to take the time to admire the fine tank textures when it's firing hot lead at you.

I snagged an AGP x800XL on sale from Future Shop for $399 (cdn :P ). I haven't opened the XL yet, I might bring it back because if I really don't need a new card, why blow money on it..especially with the next gen cards coming out, which may drive current cards down in price *kicks self in nads*

What card are you running, and what level of performance are you getting? Can any x800XL users vouch for the card's performance, and value?

Re: Your video card performance in BF2

I'm running a ATI 9800XT Pro. I run @ 1280x1024, 6xAA everything on high except lighting on medium. I get between 35-60 fps, depending on where I am on the map.

Re: Your video card performance in BF2

I'm running a 6800 Go here (rar, laptop gaming!). I'm running BF2 at 1680x1050 with just about everything set to medium (except Dynamic Shadows witch are messed up on my drivers, and thus disabled). It's pretty much silky smooth. I haven't even bothered to check framerates since it already A) looks great and B) plays so well. So there's one opinion. I'd guess my 6800 Go should be fairly comparable to an x800XL (at least they are on paper) unless there are driver issues with BF2 on one or the other.

The game still looks wicked good at all medium settings by the way (at least in my opinion). I've heard if you're getting poor performance, 1gb of RAM will do you more good than a video card upgrade though. I've not tested that yet personally however.

9800 non-pro here. I run at 1024x768, all Medium settings 'cept for Dynamic lighting/shadows which are Low (hmm, maybe even Off). And I definitely don't have any of that AA/AF/ATF/AZZ stuff!

I'm in the market for a 6600GT or possibly even 6800 if the prices fall enough in the next 30 days or so.

Re: Your video card performance in BF2

9700 Pro, only tried on 1024x768

With everything maxed apart from 2xAA i get an average of 25fps, but it dips quite low in intense gfx times (lots of smoke etc).

With everything on lowest/off, and vis down from 100% to 50% it plays at around 50-60 on average, and never drops below 40. And to honest even tho it doesn't look as good, it still doesn't look that bad. I have a 19" CRT monitor, and it doesn't look grainy or pixelated, and I can still pick out people at 150m-200m well for a red-dot shot.

I have a friend with an x850PT whatever it is, and it does look very nice (although he says he hardly notices the difference between 6xAA and 2xAA except in stills). Personally having seen his I can see it is a lot better than mine, but not for the current price tag. Personally I'd put the money into more RAM.

Re: Your video card performance in BF2

I feel for you guys with the 9700's. I've been running with it for 3 years, and I'm constantly surprised how well it still performs (after some OC'ing). I run everything on medium at 1024x768, and i get around 45 fps. The somke and debris from the vehicles kills my framerate, so i turned it to low. This setup is ok for me right now, but before the summer is over I should have a new machine running Crossfire. Hooyeah

Re: Your video card performance in BF2

Crossfire is ATI's answer to SLI, right?

I'm surprised to see so many still with 9x00 cards, but they've held up really well Probably the best bang for the buck I've ever spent on video. I never go higher than 1024x768 either, simply because I use a 17" monitor
