Squad Airborne
Early in the password-protected evening, I was instructed to start a new airborne-only squad. This turned out to be a fabulous idea. At the beginning of every round, I'd radio in to the commander "This is Squad 5. We're your air support." From that point on, all the command had to say was "I need air over construction" or drop a waypoint, and our combined forces could be coordinated for devastating power. The chain of command worked, with the commander only worrying about what was needed on the macro level, and SL and his squad taking care of the details such as who was in the vehicles and who should attack what.
One complaint though. If there's a dedicated airborne squad, and you're not in airborne, please don't take the vehicles! Let me say that again for effect: Please don't jump in air vehicles if you're not in airborne! There was nothing more frustrating as the airborne SL than to have my commander crying for air support to hit Hotel, when I was powerless to make it so because the attack chopper was being piloted by grunts from another squad. If you want to attack from the air, join airborne! If airborne is full, and there's not enough vehicles to support another air squad, please be patient and wait for a squad opening. As it was, on the demo map, a full MEC airborne squad always had 1 or 2 of its members idle, so we tried to do double-duty as base defense as well. Imagine our aggravation when our vehicles were yoinked and most of "airborne" was left "grounded." I wish the MEC had a troop-transport chopper in the demo, as participating in coordinated airborne infantry assaults looks to be a blast. A whole squad could be based entirely on that chopper and its tactics. Does retail have airborne transport for all sides?

Re: Squad Airborne
ive read in a couple other forums of talks in some mods making a pilot class with
istol knife and a few smoke grenades. that way only the pilot class can fly the air stuff. i think it would work cuase i see alot of guys just using the planes and choppers just for map transport..they bail out over stuff and the thing crashes.

Re: Squad Airborne
The Chinese side actually has 2 different types of transport Helo's. The MEC side doesn't have any.

Re: Squad Airborne
I have heard that on certain maps, MEC does indeed have troop-transport choppers. Just that Oman doesn't.
The "Blackhawk-Only" squads are real nice too. I have had the distinct pleasure of being on an incredible squad dedicated to turning that chopper into a "Platform of Death". Engineers and Medics working in harmony to keep the bird aloft, and its crew alive. You would be absolutely amazed at the amount of damage 3 engineers can repair sitting in the back of that chopper. |

Re: Squad Airborne
I had the pleasure of being on your air squad for some time last night. This is something I felt was lacking in the earlier days of the demo. Before, whoever got to the aircraft first got in it, so you could never know what they were going to be doing, and if they were going to communicate with the team. Restricting the aircraft to a single squad allowed the air support to be much more focused and responsive to what the commander needed.
The only frustrating part like you said was when random people would steal the aircraft. Fortunately it didn't happen all that often. Honestly I'm surprised it happened at all since everyone on the server had to at least visit the forums, which would suggest they know what squad based play means.

Re: Squad Airborne
The Air squad worked out well once we got it established on the MEC side. Having a dedicated air unit really helps the commander. And having the extras work base defense worked wonderfully as well, since the USMC kept sending people there over and over.

Re: Squad Airborne
its always cool when your squad is pinned down and you call the blackhawk over and you can see them landing right next to you and can hear those mini guns a humming....its a great feeling.

Re: Squad Airborne
I would join the Airborne squad but not to fly. I would be a engineer and fix damaged planes. In the meantime I could protect the base and fix command items. If a plane was about to land the squad commander could tell me that person was about to land. I think that would be really fun.

Sorry, that was us. BTW Hello to all the fellow tg members. I played with in BF/DC back then I used NYGANG_THRASH, now I use MINION THRASH. When I downloaded bf2 demo, and saw how it was set up. My first thought was to see if TG had a demo server, since tg is the best team oriented server I had ever been on. Last night was awsome!!!! I had found while playing the best time I had was with a squad leader who talked alot, didnt matter what we were doing. There seems to be more squad leaders that dont talk then do. So........I decided to make my own squad last night and try to harrass the other teams commander as much as possible So that was us, and yes I knew it was you (hehe) |

Re: Squad Airborne
I think it is a great idea. Many times I have asked the CO for some air support, but rarely get it as it is not a button that he/she can click.
To have an airborne strike force ready to bail my squad out of trouble should I need it would be a very powerful tool. |
