Questions about commander mode

I finally got in a good command game very late last night between 2 and 4:30 am (eastern). Yes, it took a few hours for me to connect, as usual, and there were still 50 players at this late hour. I don't find it's true that you can always connect by just trying for a few minutes, certainly not in prime time, which I'm guessing is between 9-12 eastern time for most TG's?

There were maybe one or two TG's left at this time. (Are all TG's using |TG| in front of their names?) It was the Chinese vs USA map (can't remember the name) and our squads cleaned house. I could not voip because my wife was sleeping in the same room at the time, but it still worked out, which shows that if you are organized, you can still win without making voice commands all the time.

The questions: someone asks for something and I don't get an indicator of who they are on the map. I can see the last 'text' message and the name of the squad member who made the request (if I have time to look before it goes away), but how do I contact this person? Names are not listed in any squads. Sometimes I see the yellow icon flashing, which makes it easier to answer, but often I was getting requests and could not find their location. The flashing yellow squad icon did not seem to be consistent. Is it always a yellow flashing indicator when a request is made?

Can you order an individual unit (a tank, by itself) somewhere? I tried this many times, but often the 'move here' line would go back to a squad, which means to me that the lone unit was part of that squad but far away from it. I didn't want to tell the whole squad to 'move', just the lone tank.

What colors are the UAV, scanner, art, when they are fully working, and when they are not working? Is it 'yellow' for destroyed, or just damaged? What does 'black' mean? I also could not find either the scanner or the uav symbol in our base. There were 3 art symbols, and one that looked like a satellite dish. Is this the uav or scanner? I could see my scanner was destroyed but I could not find the symbol on the map in order to get it repaired. I assume all 3 are in your base.

Can you order individual members of a squad to do something by clicking on their icon within the squad? For example, I want to tell the engineer in squad 4 to fix the UAV.

I'm sure this will all be easier when I'm able to use voice commands, but it was fun to see how much you can do without it. Time went by very fast. I just noticed the clock going out at 17 seconds, and that was just enough time to individually click all the squads and commend them for a great job.

Is it fairly common for commanders to always take the number one spot on the ranking? I did get my 'no.1 medal', which was a first for me, but I don't know if it's because this position is just easier than the others (to get points) or if I was actually doing a good job. And how exactly does the commander score points? Can't find this info.

You'll hear requests like "i'm bingo on ammo" coming from squad grunts. I tend not to pay much attention to them as it is the squad leader that should assess if a supply drop is needed or not. A good SL will satisfy the ammo request with a support kit in squad, or will request supplies. Either way, when a SL makes a request with the SL commo rose, you'll see the indicators on the command map and you can simply right-click them and select "accept" or "reject". If the request comes through the comm channel, then the SL needs to identify his squad by number.

No. You cannot command individual squad grunts. You can only command squads as a unit (via the squad leader). Try not to micro-manage your squads. Tell the SL what you need, and let him decide how best to manuver his men to get the job done. Do tell the SL info that will assist him, such as preferred route, or types of enemy threats. You can also tell the SL "squad 1, you have a member of your squad in a tank far north of your position, i need him to remain in that location ...", but ultimately, as the commander, you order squads to accomplish objectives, and it is the SL's job to decide how best to accomplish them.

When they are fulling working, they are black in color. When they are not operational, they are yellow. You can have just one artillery gun black and the others yellow and still call artillery, it just won't be as effective. The satellite dish is the UAV and the scanner (i think they use the same symbol... i could be wrong). The UAV is a trailer, and the scanner is a rectangular dish antena. Both will be in your main base.

No. Again, you order the squad. Let the SL order his men. But know that suqad 4 has an engineer will help you decide which squad to use.

No offense, but if you're going to be the commander or a squad leader, please use a mic and use the voice comms. I know some people are effective without it (maybe you for example), but unfortunatly most squad leaders HATE not having their commander on voice.

Also, remember you can multi-select squads using the shift and control keys.

Sounds like you're doing a great job as commander. I look forward to playing with you.

Re: Questions about commander mode

Thanks for the answers. Yes, using the mic was something I really wanted to do, but at the time, could not, because the wife (the supreme commander) would be yelling certain commands at me such as "Turn that $%&*# off and get to bed!"

If I can manage to get into some games at a more reasonable hour, the mic is definitely going to be used a lot. If I get on a game again very late, where I can't use it, I most likely will not take command position again. I did try typing commands, but I doubt it's as effective.
