Need help using bombs

I need some tips on using the bombs that all of the jets seem to carry (some more than others). I've figured out how to spot land targets and I think my flying is good enough to line up a straight bombing run, but it seems my timing is off when I fire/release the bombs. Obviously the timing depends on airspeed and angle of decent/ascent upon release but I just can't seem to get the timing down except on rare occasions when I get lucky.

The real problem is that there is no feedback. I can't tell if I released too early or too late because by the time the bombs hit the ground I've flown past. I can't seem to switch cameras to see them, either.

I'd say you have two options.

1- Work with a spotter. Have some sniper sit in view of the target you're going to bomb, and have him inform you of where the bombs hit.

2- Find an empty server, and practice on stationary targets. Use varying degrees of incline/speed/elevation until you are able to "eyeball" your way through a bombing run.

Re: Need help using bombs

After some search I think I need to redo my binds to get the camera change working so I can see the explosions.

Or come in at a steaper angle, like 90*, that should make it pretty hard to miss.

Re: Need help using bombs

Hopefully the private server is full tonight, but if it is not jump on their and have somebody spot where your bombs are landing. Ill probably jump on around 9:45PM eastern to see if anything is going on. Hopefully people will be on their.

Re: Need help using bombs

I can offer a couple tips...
-When you are first learning, come at your targets at close to a 90 degree angle. It takes more time to set up the run, but it's easier to hit your target. As you get better, you can slowly start to level off to were you can come in at 30 or even 20 degrees...the more shallow your approach, the earlier you have to release.

-On your joystick, bind one button to rearview cam and one to cockpit cam. You can take a quick .5 second look back when you hear the explosion to see where your bomb landed. Also, for those of you who didn't play BF42, if you tap the cockpit cam button a second time, it moves the camera out to a nose view...what this does is removes the 3d vehicle model from your view...very useful for helo gunners. No more staring at the dials when aiming down.

Edit: servers can opt to turn off the option for the nose cam; most don't, but just in case you tried it and it doesn't work...the server admin as disabled it. TG allows the nose cam.

-One thing ppl dont realize is that you dont have to hold your approach angle for very long. Once you get the hang of it, you'll realize that you can be flying fairly low to the groud and simply dip your nose down to angle and release the bomb in one quick motion. This way, you can easily get a 45 degree attack angle even if you are flying low to the ground. A common mistake here is releasing the bomb while still nosing down. I can't count the number of times in BF42 where I flew into my own falling bomb : Þ

-Bind a joy button to open the large map...with the size of maps in BF2 and the speed at which the jets move, it's easy to come in on a bad line. Pulling up the map for a quick peak can help you get a better line early on so you only have to worry about adjsuting one axis as opposed to two. Once you learn the maps well and can read the landscape, this isn't an issue.

-Bombing is all about finesse...as with anything of that nature it take practice to get good at it.

good luck out there,
-erich

Edit: One more thing that might or might not be obvious. When in a plane that drops a series of bombs, the steeper the attack angle, the tigher the cluster. If you are taking our armor, come in high and fast...if it's a bunch of infantry units, come in low and slow(er) to spread the love : )
