Help educate your fellow player

This message goes out to all players that frequent our TG servers. Having two public servers and a private server can dilute the TG-minded player base. Our servers also have a terrific ping (for US players at least) and attracts many new public players that do not know what TG is or how we play. This is where you all come in.

I know it is frustrating to jump on the server and catch a bad squad, squad leader or commander. Instead of removing them from your squad, joining another squad or calling for kick-votes & mutunies, we should try to educate these players first. Many times they are just playing the way that they would on any other public server and don't know the difference... and many times once they see the light, they will never go back.

SO EDUCATE!

Explain to them that we try hard to work as a coordinated squad and team. Teach them what it means to play objective based and that defense can be part of the overall strategy. Let them know that we have a pretty active forums community and point them to the website (www.TacticalGamer.com) <-- notice there is no Z.

This does take some patience but I believe in the end it will strengthen our community and help it grow. If we can help the players awareness of our style of play, they'll come back more often and continue to learn from the rest of us. Soon enough we'll have three servers full of objective team-based players!

Make sure to that we show respect at all times. There will be those lone wolf rambo types who will have no desire to play as a team. There will be those who will want to rant and complain and show dis-respect to you and the community. Be patient and continue to show respect.

When we stumble upon those players that do not want to play TG style, here are a few things to keep in mind.

1) Show respect
2) Write down the the player's names.
3) Contact an admin via teamspeak with the name and what they are doing.
3a) If an admin is not present on teamspeak, PM one of us in the forums.
4) If you're a squad member, find another squad or create your own.
5) If you're a squad leader, use the manage squad button and remove them from your squad.
6) Do not tell them they will be kicked or banned... just explain our rules and guidelines. Let the admin's send the kick / ban messages.
7) Don't argue with players in-game. If there is a problem, take it to the admins.

Re: Help educate your fellow player

If we are having a huge influx of public members, I'd say the best course of action is to place the servers under a public password that is available to all under the SOP and guidelines.

Is the server text in-game available to view before connection? Say you just click on the server once to get the statics/people in the game? If so, we could have the text mention how this is a team-oriented 'public' server and to gain access to visit the SOP & guidelines in the forums.

This way, anyone who joins knows what the server is about and we dont' have a huge influx of public people taking away our supported seats on the server. Maybe this shoudl at least be done until the automated kick feature for supported members is working. Admins can't always be around 24/7 when a server is full, and I'd rather not lose my spot on our server due to some public guy just randomly joining.

I'm married. I don't have a lot of time to play when I can play. I want to be able to jump on when I'm able to and get right into the awesome action that TG is. But pubbies can prevent me from being able to join and they can ruin the game play on top of that.

We have enough people who know about TG to keep a 64 player server full, I believe. Why not at least public lock the 64 player one and leave the 48 open. If you lock the 48 and leave the 64 open then our members will just join the 64 because it has more people. I say lets try it for a week.

Well said! in my experience, most people *do* want to be led. They want to be told what to do but will rarely speak up on their own. So take the time to educate and lead by example.

Out.

Re: Help educate your fellow player

Rizzo-

You're right. I spent time in your squad on some frigging huge map last night, and had a great time, even though my score was probably the lowest I've ever posted since buying the game. (Granted, a lot of that had to do with a sweet, but accidental massive teamkill with the tv guided bomb and our apc. The tags do not show up soon enough, for my money)

Point being, it's not about the score, it's about having a cohesive squad. I also noticed that half the guys in the squad were labled as TG, so I'm going to try and join those types of squads in the future.

Re: Help educate your fellow player

I think Rizzo is right. I have had a few times where people have joined my squad and kinda run around doing there own thing. It is actually quite common soon after I start a squad. However after about an hour of play, with no "active" education attempts on my part (ie I'm telling them what they should do, but not saying that this is the way we should be doing it according to the server rules) they tend to be all working together as a nice cohesive unit, sticking together and supporting each other (important for my squad as a favour a wide range of different classes).

People like to be led, just as I like to be led by the CO.

I think an important point is for us to recognise guys that are playing well (teamwork wise I mean), and invite them onto the forums. Hopefully the experience will be enough that they come back of their own accord, but the more we get into the forums the more team players we will have on the server (IMO).

Yeah, that map was huge and taking the "scenic route" on the rivers made it seem even bigger! BUt I'll tell ya, I get tired of the zerging so I like to try skirt around, avoid the zerg, and hit a remote base or, at the very least, try to get behind the zerg in a big battle.

As for the scores, yeah, they can really suffer when you're not zerging and although I don't worry too much about it personally as SL, I still feel like I've let my squaddies down if they're not getting scores in the top 10. I shouldn't be worrying about it...because it's secondary to winning but it's in my nature.

I discovered a neat little trick last night to get everybody together, assuming you're all scattered for whatever reason:

set a generic "Move To" waypoint somewhere AWAY from known enemy positions. Tell everybody to rendevous at that point and let them figure out how to get there. Give it a few minutes and watch to see if they're making effort to get there or not (most will). If not, then tell em to hustle because the squad is waiting on them.

This is especially useful right after a failed attack and your squad gets separated. Set the waypoint, tell everybody to fall back to it, regroup, and attack again as one.

ive have done this as commandor set each squad a waypoint and wait until they get to each one and tell them whats going to happen and then set out the orders....with the new delay start thing it will be easier to set up a strategy before game starts

Re: Help educate your fellow player

Rizzo - You were a very good SL last night. I had a lot of fun on your squad and learned a lot on how to lead a squad.

I've had some great learing experiences from being in a squad with a TG SL. I'm learning and trying out the SL role, which is showing that nothing takes the place of experience. I had a great squad last night (until I got disconnected) that was able to dig in and really hold a point. Granted, our CO kind of forgot about us I think but we stayed at our flag and held while under constant pressure.
