please help me fly a chopper

i can't do it... i really can't. i tried close to an hour all by myself but i can't get the damn thing to even just go straight for more than a minute!

here's what i do:

1. press and hold w until the bar on the left goes all the way up
2. chopper gets off the ground and i let go of w
3. i dip the chopper's nose a little
4. press and hold w again and it moves forward
5. about 10 seconds later instead of going forward i magically go UP!
6. i go in a circle and crash
7. wash, rinse, repeat

so what am i doing wrong here? should i let go of the w key? but if i do, i go straight down! i'm trying to just fly straight from one end of the map to the other and i can't even get to the halfway mark!

please help.

Re: please help me fly a chopper

first off you dont ever need to let go of the W key when you're starting off and not worrying about landing, remember that it tells how far you're dipping with the HUD, adjust accordingly and you can also look at your Altitude and speed meter to get a feeling for it as if you go to far you go into a slight dive.

Although a dive is nice if you get good with it and can make an extremely quick (and safe) blackhawk landing

Re: please help me fly a chopper

If you are using just the WASD keys like you might for a land vehicle then that is your problem. Remember that a helo has three dimensional motion. You need to use either another set of keys or mouse.

Assuming mouse+keyboard:
- Think of the 'W' and 'S' keys as your vertical "thrust" axis. (Verticle being relative to your helo, *not* the ground) So pressing 'W' will add momentum to your helo in a direction perpendicular to the helo rotors.

- Think of your 'A' and 'D' keys as your left-right rudders. Pressing 'A' will turn your helo left, relative to the helo body. (And 'D' will turn right)

Then the mouse, the tricky part. ;P
- I have mine setup such that it is "inverted". This means that when I move my mouse forward the entire helo tilts forward(down). And pulling the mouse back tilts backwards(up).
- Left and right with the mouse then tilts the craft...uh, left and right.

So to fly try just adding thrust for takeoff then gently tilt forward so that part of the vertical thrust adds forward velocity. Then as you continue to move about take it slow and use the mouse to constantly make minor course corrections. At first you will probably be making turns mostly with the rudder but with practice you might soon start recieving compliments on flying without even using a joystick. =D

(I'm still waiting on mine...stupid broken crap...) ;P

I use WASD and a mouse and I fly just as well as somebody with a joystick

Re: please help me fly a chopper

yea i can fly a transport chopper real well with a mouse & arrow keys but i can't dogfight with jets or really line up attack chopper missles very well...waiting on my joystick to come in - got myself a logitech extreme 3d pro off justdeals.com @ ebay for a meager $3.30 + $12 shipping. i also threw in a headset for an extra
$.99 so for all you looking to add these to your BF2 gear i would definately recommend ebay.

From the time I lift off till i reach my first target area i never let off the W key. You dont want to get alot of altitude so keep the BLACKHAWK low and fast till you get there. (JETS ARE YOUR WORST ENEMY, SOME ARE SUICIDAL WHEN THEY MISS WITH ROCKETS....like me )

Once i reach my first target area I slowly circle the area with my SIDES FASING THE TARGET (keep your gunners happy). To maintain the hover I will tapp W to keep the engine speed up while using my tail rudder to maintain a lazy circle around the area. If i want to drop altitude QUICKLY I will hit S but dont let the engines slow down too much or u wont recover and you and your BLACKHAWK TEAMMATES will parish.

WHEN LOITERING OVER THE TARGET AREA KEEP THE CHOPPER STEADY EVEN YOU ARE TAKING FIRE (if they are hitting you with BIG STUFF move on to the next target area)

WARCRIMINAL'S BLACKHAWK CHECKLIST

x 2 GUNNERS

x 2 ENGINEERS (these guys keep u in the air all day and can mine all the roads around the enemy)

x 1 SUPPORT (provides never ending mines and ammo to all on board and additional fire support)

x 1 MEDIC (this is critical to keeping all onboard alive)

If you are a squad leader and all these belong to your squad they can always respawn DIRECTLY to the BLACKHAWK so you will never need to look for a flight crew.

REMEMBER!!!! IT TAKES 6 SQUAD MEMBERS TO MAKE THE BLACKHAWK THE MOST DEADLY WEAPON ON THE BATTLEFIELD!!!

PS. I use Logitec MX1000 lazer mouse and keyboard for choppers and Logitec Wingman Joystick for Jets

For heaven's sake, get a twist joystick! There are plenty of people that use the keyboard & mouse for this stuff, but IMO, a js gives a much better experience.

Re: please help me fly a chopper

For the people with joysticks....when you let go of the joystick (let it center itself) does your craft and chopper center themselves or do you have to adjust with your joystick accordingly to get the aircraft/chopper to center?

That's the problem I have with a gamepad. The axis will not auto center and I have to try and fine tune the axis to get it centered, which never works! So I'm wondering if a joystick has the same problem before I buy one.

THanks!

He's talking about the fact that you made the font larger and made it all in bold. Everyone in my office was able to read it. I'm trying to keep it on the down low.

Re: please help me fly a chopper

I tried joystick and I returned my joystick to the store....

Mouse and Keyboard is the way to go... at least for me...

ok lemme try to imagine what I do...

1. Hold downs W untll chopper is in the air...
2. Once chopper is in the air push your mouse forward so the nose dives a little. Do not let the nose dive too much if u think you chopper is going down pull your mouse to yourself (back) then u will lose speed but maintain altitude.
3. Now you are going forward here are the things u gotta look at
- Press and let go W to adjust height... If u r losing altitude hold W. If u r too high let go of it for a little bit
- Here is why you are crashing a lot... You gotta move your mouse so that line in the middle keeps itself perfectly horizontal (this is just for starters, later you can tilt your heli to do some tight turning) Move mouse to the right if that line tilts to the right and vice versa
4. To turn use D and A. the line will tilt so keep it straight. Keep practicing these steps until you can fly from the Carrier to the island without incident.
5. Landing is tricky. Once you are at your destination Pull your mouse back. If u pull it too much your helo will start to go back... So keep in right in the spot. This will take some practice to learn as well. Now u can press S to start losing altitude slowly and u land.

Start practicing with a transport Heli... It will forgive most of your mistakes and keep themselves in the air... Once you wanna rock and roll try attack helo...... Especially the American one... Those badboys are fast and fun to fly... And then create a single player and TK bots to get the helo and fly away. Good luck. Do not kill me too much once u r a master.

Re: please help me fly a chopper

And the capital letters all over the place...Hehe. Sorry for not explaining myself I had to go run off last night

And sgt forgot to mention that you don't have to turn using s and d. You can turn by tilting sideways and pulling up on the controls (down with the mouse for me). And it will make for a quicker turn and a way to avoid missiles.
