Question from a N00b...
Hey all,
I've recently found the TG game servers, and I have to say, I've had a blast. The strict adherance to tactical play (and teamwork) is exactly what I've been looking for. Having said all that, however.. I have a question regarding the benefits of becoming a "full" member of this community: It seems that the main benefit is playing on the private BF2 server. The trouble is that anytime I look at it's status in GameSpy, there is between 0 and 3 people on it. Does this server ever see any action? I'd hate to cough up 9 bucks only to find out that there's nothing going on on the member server. Thanks in advance, folks. Regardless, I'm looking forward to playing on a TG server again soon! |

Re: Question from a N00b...
There are more benefits than just the private BF2 server, for example supporting members get first digs at any bf2 spot. If server 1 is full, you can go on teamspeak and request a slot be made available for you.
For me however it was not about whether it was "worth the money" or not. For me it was a case of supporting a community that I thought was good, and who's resources I was using. Even though I only became a supporting member after bf2 was released, I made my mind up to become one from playing on the Neverwinter Nights server. There would have been no benefit for me there at all, but it was something I wanted to do. It's all a personal choice.

The $9 per month goes to the site/communtiy as a whole, not just BF2. The immediate benefits for you, assuming you only play BF2 here, and not one of the many other games we support, is that all SMs can use Teamspeak to clear a spot for you if the public servers are full. You also will have access to the Private Server, which, as you note, is a little dead. It is there if you want it, but right now, we are all still learning the game's nuances, and we are making a concerted effort not to abandon the public servers in favor of hardcore TG play. That said, I'd like to point out that we also host Ghost Recon (with our own mods), Counterstrike Source, SWAT4, Natural Selection, and Neverwinter Nights, mostly on dedicated servers. We also have a Community Event server that has just about anything you can think of that can be brought online for specific events. We also have our own blog site, our own Wiki, a site for teams/clans, and we are going to have our own Linux distribution. I don't know if that is enough to wrangle $9 out of you, but it was for me. See you on the server! |

Re: Question from a N00b...
Hey again guys,
Thanks for the replies! I completely understand the benefits of supporting a gaming community, and I apologize if I sounded a bit harsh in my previous post (after re-reading it, it did have a bit of a "what's in it for me?" tone). I too played NWN on private, community-supported servers (which I supported as well). I didn't realize that there are TG-run servers though. That may be enough to get me back into NWN. Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I DO understand what you're saying. I'll be signing up as a supporting member today or tonight .Hope to see you all soon! -Smed |

Re: Question from a N00b...
Also want to point out that besides the reserved slots on the public servers, TG is looking to setup a weekly scrimage with another gaming community. Supporting members will get first dibs on those slots. (side note: Apo is still setting that up)

I don't see that anyone else has mentioned this yet, but you also get a TG e-mail address and webspace.
It is convenient to have the webspace to use to host my sig graphics. The e-mail address is cool too but I really haven't had a need to use it as of yet since the only place I game is TG.

There are lots of people here that aren't supporting members, and there is no prejudice against them (either from me or anyone or TG as a whole). It's fantastic here that we are given the choice ![]() (ps not to hijack the thread in a bf2 forum, but the NWN server is very good. Shogun runs it and he's a 100% top class superb guy, and doesn't turn you into a penguin too often.. hehe... definitely worth a look, just go to the NWN multiplayer search and you should see TacticalGamer in the PW Action, playing a modded version of Path of Ascension. More info of course in the NWN Forums --->> )

Re: Question from a N00b...
Are the public servers that full?
I've been thinking of getting the game but was scared because of the lack of teamplay. I've found this forum and it's the kind of gaming I'm looking for... I'd like to give it a try at first before shelling out the bucks since I can only play a few hours per week (5?). I guess 9$ a month is worth it if it's quality gaming.

Plus, the supporting members support all of TG... the servers for all games, websites (wiki, blog, etc.), the forums, free email / web / ftp access and much more. |

Well, I bought the game last night. Logged in on the two public server fine, but sometimes it took a try or two.
Now, sorry for my poor performance during some rounds. It took me a while to figure out that you could only select your respawn point in the kit view, not the squad view... So I wasted 3-4 minutes going from one squad to another wondering why it wasn't respawning... Plus, my VOIP wasn't working for some reason. I'll have to investigate this. I was pressing B but it wasn't doing anything. The mic test worked fine though. Weird. I was also surprised that so many SL were not using VOIP. It makes the game so much better. I think I'll play this game whenever I get a chance (1 yound kid keeping me busy!) for a while and will become a SM soon. edit: If it wasn't for TG, I wouldn't have bought this game because of the incredibly low amount of teamwork on the other servers. |
