Question Pilots: Recovering from helicopter roll

Does anyone have any tips for recovering control of a helicopter once it starts to roll? Once it starts to roll there seems to be very little that can be done to rein it back in again before crashing into the ground

I'm flying using the default heli controls, using the mouse and keyboard.

Cheers,

Dr_Doom

If you are high enough, complete the roll. When you get past the 180 degree point in the roll, you'll want to start the stick the opposite way to slow it down. With a little practice, you'll find this very easy to do. If you go between 90 and 180 degrees into a roll, you'll find it more difficult to recover than if you had just rolled the thing

Re: Pilots: Recovering from helicopter roll

Also, if you hit the ground for whatever reason and start to roll (landing on an axis, for example) rather than fight the roll, push in the firection of the roll to complete it and then when you are prety much righted again fight it as hard as possible in the other direction and try to lift off. Half the time you can survive hitting the ground and rolling, but you are horribly vulnerable to fire while you are doing it.

Re: Pilots: Recovering from helicopter roll

The best way that I've found to recover from a helo roll is almost the same advice for dealing with a card skid-out: Steer into it, and pull up on the stick (for choppers). At first you'll feel like you're basically going to slam side-first into the ground, but as long as you have a bit of altitude you'll end up doing a weird whirly-doo-weeble-wobble thing and right yourself.

Yes, the whirly-doo-weeble-wobble is an official maneuver.

Is it trademarked?

Re: Pilots: Recovering from helicopter roll

Think I might change my controls to swap A/D to roll instead of mouse left/right and get rudder left/right on the mouse. I think some of my trouble was due to roll being on the mouse and me moving the mouse sideways slightly when pulling up/down...

I shall diligantly practice the whirly-doo-weeble-wobble as well.

Once you do the maneuver on server 2 and export the battlefield recorder showing it in-flight with detailed instructions on how to perform, the TG admins will stamp it with their 'patent' approval.

Re: Pilots: Recovering from helicopter roll

don't know if this applies to BF2 (but I wouldn't be suprised):

on bf42/BFV if you managed to take your finger off the throttle/put throttle to neutral, then put it back on again, the helo would suddenly lose a lot of inertia and become much more responsive...

trouble is, when you're in that kind of situation it can be hard persuading your hand to play along i.e. panic makes me mash the keyboard

will have to try it in BF2 and check...

Re: Pilots: Recovering from helicopter roll

I tried the A/D and mouse control swap a few days ago and I could never get it to work. Kept saying that the mouse axis was already being used for a common control. Let me know if you got it to work, I think it would help me with flying a lot since roll seems more like strafing to me.

BF2 binding just sucks...maybe in a later patch?

Re: Pilots: Recovering from helicopter roll

Its probably easier to just edit your config file (I've not tested this yet!)...
1. Goto 'My Documents'
2. Open the folder 'Battlefield 2'
3. Open the folder 'Profiles'
4. I only have one offline profile (I think all the profiles should be in here though) so I opened folder '0001'
5. Open the file 'Controls.con' in wordpad (or any text editor of your choice), I'd recommend making a back-up of this file before you try this as if it does not work you could bork your control configs which would be bad.
6. Search for this string 'ControlMap.create HelicopterPlayerInputControlMap' just below it you will find your helicopter controls.
7. Change the following line:
ControlMap.addKeysToAxisMapping c_PIYaw IDFKeyboard IDKey_D IDKey_A 0
to look like this:
ControlMap.addKeysToAxisMapping c_PIYaw IDFMouse IDAxis_0 0 0
8. Now change this line:
ControlMap.addAxisToAxisMapping c_PIRoll IDFMouse IDAxis_0 0 0
to this:
ControlMap.addAxisToAxisMapping c_PIRoll IDFKeyboard IDKey_D IDKey_A 0
9. Save the file.
10. Launch BF2, your controls for yaw and roll for helicopters should have been swapped.

Again I've not managed to test this yet, as I'm at work. It should swap roll to A/D and yaw to Mouse Left/Right...

Wow...i must have missed that page in the manual, but anyways, thanks, I'll give it a try.

Heh, I'm a game programmer by trade so I tend to poke about when I find something that does not work right (like the key binding). Make sure you back-up your Controls.con before editing it though!

Hopefully if you've only got one profile on your PC for BF2 things should be easy enough as the profile your after will be in the 0001 folder. I guess if you've got more than one you can check in Profile.con in each folder to find out the name for that profile, till you find the correct folder.

Re: Pilots: Recovering from helicopter roll

I got it to work. I still suck at flying, but I think this way is easier for me. One thing though, when you change a function to mouse control you use "addAxisToAxisMapping" and when you assign a keyboard you use "addKeyToAxisMapping," but you would've figured that out. Thanks again.
