BF2 Combat Tour of Duty

What is this non-sense? Seems to be just an elaborate ladder maybe?

Quote:
EA and Planet Combat are pleased to announce two initiatives that have been building up for some time and are now ready to roll: BF2 Combat: The Battlefield 2 Tour of Duty and the Ranked Server Admin Program. Both of these initiatives are provided to the community entirely by the team at Planet Combat, with our blessing.

BF2 Combat, the Battlefield 2 Tour of Duty, is a unique community which will allow players to experience Battlefield 2 as never before. Featuring multiple ten-hour battles every week (of which members can attend as many or as little as they like) the Tour of Duty offers members a hierarchically-structured environment replete with cool features. During signup, people have the option of enlisting to fight for the United States Army or Marine Corps, the Middle Eastern Coalition Armies, or the People's Liberation Army. All divisions offer the same superior game experience. Players can elect to participate in a variety of programs, including an Army Ranger School designed by real US Army Rangers and a wide swath of qualifications. Perhaps the coolest thing about the Tour of Duty is that the world changes dynamically not only after each battle but also after each three month Tour. That means generals are able to decide what areas they will attack next, and the maps played will reflect these decisions. Members will also be able to bring their unlocked weapons in on battle day and will get priority selection for BF2 Combat's public ranked servers.

The Tour of Duty works not only for the hardcore gamer, it's a great environment for those new to the Battlefield Franchise to learn the ropes and to get better. BF2 Combat's clan fusion, allows clans, LAN Centers, or other groups of up to fifty to join and fight as one contiguous unit. Members can also participate in the map-making team, movie production squad, or writers' guild if so inclined, and they're always looking for new ways to improve the system.

European gamers needn't worry. Planet Combat will soon begin offering high-quality Game Daemons servers on both sides of the Atlantic. About 40% of BF2 Combat's members are European, and the Tour is a place to work on English and fight with a team from your own country. Members will also be eligible for GeForce 6800 Ultras from NVIDIA, a complete Alienware system, and Zboards decked out with BF2 key sets! All in all, the Tour of Duty system is one of the most innovative community programs we've seen in a long time and we expect participants will have an outstanding time with it!

Planet Combat will also be setting up regular mini-tours on Friday nights to offer the public a taste of what the Tour is like and to show why you should join. These regular events will feature prizes such as NVIDIA cards and Zboards, and will allow people to play in 64 player, organized fights. Keep checking back here for more info.

Re: BF2 Combat Tour of Duty

Wow....the part about a community being able to join with up to 50 people working together sounds really interesting for something we can do. And the whole premise of it sounds intriguing.

We'll have to stay on top of this.

Except it appears that you have to have a subcription with them.

I wonder if they do a 'clan discount' where, if we're really interested, use our supporting member funds to take part in it. Obviously only SM could partake, in that case.

This is the part that got my attention:

When going through their site to get more details I got the big "DENIED, you must pay us money to read what we are about".

I've seen other communities that have done "tours" like this where they lay out a map on their site similar to a Risk board. This map basically shows the results of all the rounds played on their servers. Based on those stats they determine which side controls the area. Intersting idea for a bit more persistent "world" without much work. And the part about "generals decide what areas they will attack next" is just picking the next set of maps in the rotation I guess.

Woooow. My clan did this once inside of the clan. 1st platoon played axis and second platoon allies and each platoons had generals and we played the WWII. It was a whole bunch of fun. This would be also a whole bunch of fun.

I was on that Planet Combat site last week and it *does* look like fun. Their dynamic map is really pretty darn cool.

Re: BF2 Combat Tour of Duty

Yeah, I've seen other "tour of duty" sites before. It's as flux says, they lay out a huge map on their website to show where the current battle rages. For a few months the servers only player certain maps and depending on who wins the most, the battle moves on to a different set of maps. It's a cool idea, but I can't imaging having a whole clan or community pay to access it.

We could easily set something up like this ourselves.

Yup. Wouldn't mind brainstorming about it.

Re: BF2 Combat Tour of Duty

They say up to 50 people in a clan can join. That makes me think that they have a 'clan' price. Otherwise, each clan member that wants to play would just pay the monthly fee and play with their clan buddies that also join.

I can be wrong, though.

Re: BF2 Combat Tour of Duty

If a journalist is willing, they could join the site and read up on it...find out how it works..and give us the details so we can do our own..or see if we'd really want to partake with them.

Morose, if you'd like to head this up and get a group together to brainstorm on it, I'm sure the admins would be more than willing to support you.

Re: BF2 Combat Tour of Duty

I read some more on this and I would agree with Asch, this is something we can do on our own servers. It is definitely subscription, looks like maybe $35/year. I like the fact that TG is tactical, but still relaxed. This thing may be a little too rigid for my tastes. I would have to dedicate more time than I'm willing to to make it worth. I'll be happy to stay here in 'TG Land' forever.

Probably. this is what's giving me that cash grab opinion. This is the system/gamelpay that should have been implemented with the BF2 release, not the current rank system. Instead of handing it out like a bonus addon (something Valve would do, God bless Valve ), EA's going for the more money route.
