Weapon Accuracy of the M4 at close range?

It seems I get less accurate the closer I get to someone. At first, I thought this was me just being a poor shot but yesterday I saw a serious problem that seemed to manifest itself for the entire map.

At numerous times during the fight, I would come across the enemy stationary and looking the other way. I kneel, put my M4 dot on his body, single shot selected (Spec Ops guy), and would then unload into the target. Each pull of the trigger was on target i.e. the the dot was on the body at all times. After the first 15 shots the guy I think scratched his arse, then realising he was being shot (bullet 22 now), turns around and shoots me with one burst.

Now normally I would put this down to either lag or my PC (it barely meets minimum spec and can chug but I manage to play pretty well), but this happened all night and even my team-mates where complaining too. The crux of it came when we were running along and a guy appeared in front of me. I unloaded (exactly) 20 rounds into him. He died but my mate tells me he only heard me fire 6 shots - so what the hell happened to the other 14!

I've also noticed the little x flash up to indicate a hit. This happens sporadically through firing the rifle when I have the dot on target, almost as though it's only registering 1 shot out of every 5.

Now strangely enough at range I seem to have the inverse of this. I can take guys out with 4 or 5 shots (accounting for missed shots as well). So this seems to be a close proximity problem I am having.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has experienced similar. I switched to the Assault (M16/203) and seemed to have better results, but with the M4 I'm expending two thirds of a clip - doing the maths on that I can kill 6 people out of 4 mags (or 120 rounds) - so my accuracy when the guy is standing still, back to me at 25 feet is a staggering %7.2!

Re: Weapon Accuracy of the M4 at close range?

There are times I can unload on a prone guy and never hit him and then he turns around and kills me almost instantly. I have a feeling it is a bug with BF2 in registering bullet hits.

This is also a rampant problem with the chain guns on attack helos. You can unload on a guy until the gun overheats, while hitting the guy the whole time, and he won't die. It seems to be completely random.

This is highly reminscent of Joint Operations, except that was also nerfed at long range as well.

i think the lag is causing the animation of firing to contuine but it isnt registering that the person you were aiming at was not there, but was a few seconds ago. i have no clue, just a thought.

I have seen this as well, I would come up behind someone, put the dot on the back of their head and shoot. Nothing. They turn around and kill me. Now I just unload into their back on full auto.

where the guy was a few seconds ago? i dont know. i think it cant update the characters positions fast enough so it looks like you are firing at them.

Nah, it happens with all weapons on people laying prone (except the knife maybe). I'm pretty sure it's not lag though since once I start unloading on them they start shuffling around and getting antsy. Nothing ever hiccups in the connection. Happened last night.. I unloaded a full clip from the SMG in the AT kit square into the back of the head of a guy who I snuck up on. He didn't even seem fazed as he stood up, broke wind in my direction and I fell over dead. Doesn't happen real often though.

I get it with the knife too. Sometimes I'm there knifing repeatedly to kill the enemy. Once, I was lying down and heard an odd sound. I got up, turned around to see a sniper trying to knife me. I unloaded and that was the end of that sniper. I was dumbfounded to not have one single scratch.

You don't get scratches with the knife...you just die

if the guy is prone and your standing trying to knife, i think you miss so go prone as well.
