Comcast NW (Oregon/Washington) Update

Hey, my internet is now back up and running (so far), and I wanted to post the information I was able to get from Comcast..

First.. the problems first started as *constant* disconnects from BF2 servers, and horrible in-game lag. Then it got worse - my connection would go down completely for an hour or so, then eventually was only up for 1 or 2 mins before all modem lights blinked and down again.

After powering down modem, connection is back, for 10 mins =) Then down again!

So call to comcast results in "Your fault, must pay $50 for service to come and fix it".

Yes, this is maddening, so I whined and complained (I'm good at that as you know), and eventually got the cell phone number of a tech who 'just happened' to be working out in my area -- ON A SUNDAY =)

Ah, so the plot thickens..

So I call, and I am told this:

"Sorry, but we are in the process up upgrading the service in your area (fiber I think), and we are having problems with some connections.. unplug modem, and leave for 10 mins disconnected (no power), then plug in.. Reboot firewall machine.. should be good."

Well, he was right, after doing this I have a solid connection once again. If you are having the same problem, make sure to try this first. I had tried powering down for 1-2 mins but it was the '10 min rule' that fixed my problem I guess.

So yes, they ARE having problems which are being caused by upgrades, and for some reason MAC addresses assigned to certain modems are 'evil' and must have new IP assigned..

There you go, hope it helps some.

Re: Comcast NW (Oregon/Washington) Update

Modulator - Demodulator..

The term applies to any piece of hardware that uses Frequency/Amplitude/Phase modulation to transmit data across any type of medium in a reliable manner.

A regular (POTS) modem works over analog telephone lines.

A Cable Modem does the same thing, and obviously uses much greater bandwidth, but it must still modulate/demodulate signals to work on the cable trunking system.

Re: Comcast NW (Oregon/Washington) Update

Comcast had some problems with their authoring service.

It's not the MAC addresses which were the problem, it was the IP addresses being assigned to them. The comcast service only accepts CERTAIN IP ranges like 24.xxx.xxx.xxx and etc. If your IP is released or reset, your modem needs to ask the service for its assigned IP back.

The problem being, that the service was down. In my area, the connection speed was great as long as your modem maintained it's assigned IP. However, if that IP was lost, the modem would ask for it back and get stuck on hold. The first few times I called tech support about this issue, it sounded like they outsourced to India or Pakistan, who kept blaming my modem. Eventually I reached a local office and had the techie give me a frank response: "Our authoring service is currently down, and we don't know when it will be back up."

It's been down/up for the past few days, but I managed to get my modem authorized during the evening. :-)

You could be mistaken, and you really mean your ethernet card, or ethernet plug if it is intigrated into u mobo.

No, a Dial-Up modem is used for Dial-up. A DSL modem is used for DSL, and a cable modem is used for cable. An ethernet card is used to accept ethernet connections, which does NOT = internet.

Well, you live a sheltered non-geeky life, then... That could be a good thing!

A modem is a device that translates one type of data into another, usually for the ability to transmit the data over a specific type of transmission line or radio. A dialup modem turns your PC's binary data into a specific type of modulated signal that carries that binary data over a telephone line. A cable modem turns your PC's binary data into a different type of modulated signal that carries that binary data over a cable line.

Ethernet refers to the type of network that exists between your PC and your cable modem or router or hub or switch or other networked PCs.
