'Battlefield 2' - v1.03 Patch Delayed Posted by Rainier on Friday, August 19 @ 19:58:03 PDT End of July, EA and DICE announced that they were working on the v1.03 patch for their FPS Battlefield 2, with a projected release date late August. As that deadline creeps closer, a community update issued earlier today points out that it will not be ready in time. " Unfortunately, as we approach the end of this month, it has become apparent that we will not meet this goal, and we wanted to keep you abreast of our progress. We are committed to making the 1.03 Update as comprehensive as possible, so while it is important to us to keep the release date, it is more important that we take the time to do this right." No new estimate was given, apart from saying it is coming.

Re: 1.03 delayed...
I don't see why everyone is ragging on them for making an expansion. You didn't really think they'd just sell BF2 as a core game and be done with it did you? I'm sure it's different studios working on the patch/expansion anyways, so whats the big deal?

Re: 1.03 delayed...
The big deal is that they are confident the bugs and game play issues will be fixed before the expansion is released. It's been a couple of months since the release and some of the more serious issues like the IFF bug have not been resolved. While it is typical to see an expansion pack after six months, I feel the nature of BF2 gives it longer lasting appeal. I probably won't be ready for an expansion after at least 8 months.

Re: 1.03 delayed...
Even if the bugs don't get fixed, it's different teams working on each project. If that studio didn't have the expansion to work on, they'd probably be doing something else, not working on a BF2 patch anyways. It's not feasable to expect DICE to have too many people working on a patch for a released game when they have multiple studios. All I'm saying is that even if the expansion wasn't coming, the rate at which we see patches probably wouldn't change, so people complaining about the expansion doesn't make much sence.

Re: 1.03 delayed...
The game should be the #1 priority. Make it 100% playable. The red-tag bug is terrible. The server browser is all but non-functional. Not being able to change your name is unforgivable. Bunny hopping should NOT be possible. The helicopter's gun is bugged something terrible. SAM's are screwed up - not just tracking, but they can pass right through a target, that's hit detection which is something quite important in an FPS.
Forget about the expansion. Get both shops working on fixing the game. With time zone differences, they could have 14-16 hours a day to work on it. Then deal with the expansion afterwards. I'm not playing the expansion, I don't care about the expansion. I care about the game I've paid for and am currently playing. I wouldn't know about the expansion if they weren't generating hype through review sites. Doing things the way they are shows nothing but greed. They have our money, now they're taking their sweet time giving us a (mostly) bug free game. That is what we paid for. That is what they should have delivered in the first place. They didn't, so it should be the #1 priority for anyone involved in Battlefield development. It's not. They don't care. They have my money. There's nothing I can do about it. And that's what makes me upset. |

Re: 1.03 delayed...
Oh crap. More waiting for them to fix the chopper minigun
. This really pisses me off. I don't care so much that EA is making an expansion because they said they started it before the game's release and I believe them seeing as all they care about is getting as much money as humanly possibe.

Re: 1.03 delayed...
The game has been out TWO months, you're acting like they just took the money and ran off to Bermuda. They have had a horrible patch followed by a hotfix. I think they should make sure they get it right this time rather than rushing. I don't think that if they through their entire team on the patch it'd get done that much faster. The hardest part of the development cycle is testing. It's hard to test for every little thing, meaning this part of the cycle can't be rushed. Putting their entire team would be a waste of resources and ineffecient.
I'm not some sort of fanboy here or anything, it's just that it should not be an unexpected outcome. As video game consumers we have gotton used to accepting non finished products on our retail shelves. We continue to purchase these games and then complain when they're not finished. This happens with pretty much every single big title thats out there. Hell Vampire:tM Bloodlines was supposedly done for a year before it got released and was one of the buggiest games out there. EA has one of the worst track records for pulling this sort of thing. At the very least they have acknowledged the issues and have even notified us of a delay in advance before the date (that doesn't always seem to happen). In the end it's the best we can hope for, which is unfortunite but unless someone wants to start making games that aren't buggy to begin with I guess there's not much to really do. |
