Wake Island - Impressions

What are your general impressions of Wake Island, and what could be improved about it?

A couple of points that I noticed:
1. DICE are morons.
2. Map is heavily biased against OpFor.
3. USMC Air dominates the map.
4. The Airfield CP is the most important flag of the map, and is the one the US heads to first. Once it is taken, Opfor loses its assets, and US gets 2 new jets. Opfor then die horribly.

Agreed. It's horribly balanced - the USMC has an advantage on every aspect of the map. They have a UCB, they have the potential to have up to 4 planes, they have boats, etc...

I was really looking forward to this map too, but we played earlier tonight and it was a massacre. I've never been so happy to be wiped off a map before.

Beatnik, after you left the squad, I was squad leader and I was sorely tempted to order them to TK each other, just to end the map early.

The map would improve 50% if china had a ucb. It would improve even more if Dice could figure out why Island maps need boats for both sides. It may also get better if you didn't know exactly where everyone would come from. IE: boats.

But I did notice, while playing by myself on server 2, that if you run over the buried plane
in a buggy on the eastern side of the island (most southern crash) that you can roll the car 2 times and keep on driving. A+ on that one.

Out of the 5 times I have played it today, the USMC only won once. They key is to keep US from getting any flag on the island. Bleed them until the tickets are equal, then pull back to the airfield and victory is within your grasp. I was listening to you guys play on TS and if the US won by capturing all the flags, then the teams were stacked, no?

Also try and get a Chinese squad to the US arty ASAP. They can take it down and man the stinger and keep all choppers and planes from taking off.

Wouldn't firing at choppers and planes taking off from the carrier count as UCB camping?

That was the last map I played on tonight (10:00PM EST)! It was a good fight up until China lost the airfield, then we simply pushed them north...and...well...we slaughtered them! They managed to capture the north west flag but as soon as the entire chinese army spawned up, I was there with a T90, and the entire USMC, ready and waiting! I managed to take a screen shot of the results...



Like shooting monkeys in a barrel...

Sorry I didn't really mean that. The stinger won't lock on that far away anyway, I meant shoot them as they are coming towards land.

That alone shows you how unbalanced the map is. The 7th person on opfor had 42 points, the 7th place on the usmc had 88.

I set up my own server to try what you were talking about flying to the Beach Base and took a look around. That beach is a spawn point for the US, and it would be using it to attack planes as they took off. In order to hold it, you need to slaughter anyone who spawns there (spawn camp) so that you can attack vehicles at the UCB. Please correct me if I am wrong (this is all hypothetical) but that seems against the TG spirit. I understand that's a great way to nip the US early. I just want to get clarification before anyone does that as to whether that is a viable solution.

This map is too hard for the Chinese to defend, very small air support and I don't think all the assets should be at the airfield flag, once we loose that we are screwed.

Guess I shouldn't have posted what I did then about Chinese winning. The map isn't unbalanced, it's TG rules that make it biased. Nothing wrong with that, just don't say that Dice is idiotic and it's a crappy map.

i personally liked the map....i COed the usmc and i had some great players.....amazing squads...i even got kickd by Amosely came back in commanded the USMC to victory.....ahhhh

After tonights bad game for china, the same team went to loose all flags as mec on karkand the very next map.

Don't be so quick to judge, this map requires coordination from china at the very start of the game. Think dalian plant when USMC gets pushed into the ocean and all they have is a carrier spawn. Well this map is like that from the very beginning. There are more than enough AA guns and 50 cals, along with their own jets and choppers to hold the USMC at bay.

This map is all about the main China base, yet is it large enough to accomidate even 3 full squads with plenty of cover for infantry to defend. The flag is deep inside the base, and with good commanding the enemies will be on your radar far before they get anywhere near it, and plenty of time to alert defenders if they are doing their job right.

I hope everyone who had a bad time give this some serious thought, because tonight the teams were badly stacked. If we play it tomorrow night I promise to command china and hopefully with a few good squads show the USMC a run for its money.
