I dunno, I'd like to command but I don't really like to have the responsability and pressure of the entire team especially when TG players expect to have good COs.
Heh, you dont need to be ex military. I know jack squat about real life military, but I play CO often. All it takes is just goin up, trying it, and then getting used to it. Its stressful at first but nobody will be mad at you if you're giving your team direction and assets. For your first time you go up, you may want to notify all the SLs that your new to it and wouldnt mind advice. Thatll make it a lot easier.

Yah, always try and get help from your SLs they can often have a better idea of whats going on where they are than you are.

I played starcraft for a little while (without cheats) to get ready for commanding and I think that helped alot.

YEAH, the commander's view in BF2 is eerily similar to the way an RTS game is set up.

but what you describe is exactly how an RTS AI will play. it's critical that if you play RTS, you play actual people. BOTS are predictable in First Person Shooters, but even more so with Real Time Strategy. they have one simple algorithm they follow and once you figure it out you can always beat a bot, no matter if the game is set on easy, medium or difficult.

i myself also come from an RTS background, and BF2 is my first FPS, so i'd like to try a turn in the chair. the big differences between a BF2 commander and a general RTS game off the top of my head:

1) LOGISTICS: i'm big on defense when i play RTS. i build a solid base or two, and then slowly attack the enemies ability to gather resources and therefore continue to field a formidable army. only when i'm sure of a victory to i go for the coup de gras and actually go toe to toe with the enemy's forces. obviously, in BF2 there are no "logistics", save for the occasional supply crate that FALLS FROM THE SKY. also in this same vein, i often attack an enemies power plants before attacking his military assets, since without power he can't operate his factories needed to churn out tanks and planes and, more importantly, use his "mega weapon" (usually a laser, nuke or the like). again, power consumption is a moot point in BF2.

2) TICKET BLEED: in RTS game you either wipe your enemy completely off the map or you don't. i'm getting a better handle on ticket bleed, but it's an entirely new concept to me personally.

3) VOIP &/or TEAMSPEAK: you control the whole army with your mouse with RTS, and the commander's screen in BF2 actually controls quite a bit in the same manner. i'm a little unnerved trying to merge giving orders with the mouse AND VOIP, but hopefully i'll pull it out one day. i also find it frustrating not to see the names of squads and their squadleaders, etc. sure you can see how many people are in a squad, what kits they have, and the vehicles, but when someone says "commander, we need the jet squad at the east mine entrance ASAP!" and you have to rub your chin and click on all the squads to see which ones have jets in their arsenal. it would also be useful on non-passworded nights so you could recognize regular squadleaders and have them be your "go to" squads. i gave commanding a shot on KUBRA DAM a few nights ago and only one squad was actively carrying out orders, so what chance did i have at success? i really would have like to see all the players on my "roster", but that just isn't the case, sadly.

but yeah, give RTS a shot, munchkin. the last one i got into was GENERALS, which is i think almost 3 years old at this point. ok, i'm done rambling.

Oh, it is that as well, but if you mass them expect a nuke on top of them.

There is a limit to what is effective, in C&C I can remember for sure that 25 grenadier was the limit I used for 1 group. Any more men than that and you start blowing up your own front line troops.

You have to secure supply lines to get money to create tanks and people, but in campaign mode usually you have limited money so have to decide what to build, then you have to do your best with what you have as you can't replace them.

Re: Helping New Commanders

So would you guys say C&C is a more strategic RTS, as opposed to, say, Warcraft 3?
