Gentleman's Contract and Me

Vertical capping, suicide bombing with jeeps, blah blah blah.

I can understand being a gentleman in the game to your other players and not ruining their day by constantly bombarding them with bombs in the UCB. I can see not suiciding jets and other strong assets into vehicles. I can even see not punishing for intended TK's, let alone accidental, but if I choose to use a tactic that is not against server rules, then I should be able to use that tactic.

I was playing on Dragon Valley the other day as Spec Ops. I was trying to single handedly take a flag due to the commander's lack of intelligence. I was facing two APC's, and an AA vehicle. They were all together, very tight. The only option I had was to drive the jeep I was in into the huddle, and explode it after running away.

I loaded the jeep with the C4. I took off down the hill, jumped out and watched the jeep come to a halt right in position. I blew the jeep when I was being shot at, and destroyed the APC and myself.

I was then told by the person driving the APC that they expected more from a TG member.

I never signed your contract. I never even posted a reply on it because I didn't like the idea of not being able to vert cap, let alone not being able to suicide jeeps into vehicles. Suiciding vehicles has been a tactic used not only in games, but in real life, for years. As I see it, if I am playing the role of an insanity driven coalition madman, I should be able to ram a jeep, jet, helo, tank, APC, AA vehicle, or boat into anything I like.

I'm not complaining about the gentleman's contract, I am simply stating that I don't follow some of it's guidelines. If you don't expect me to suicide a jeep into a herd of armor, then you are simply undefended from my attack.

Re: Gentleman's Contract and Me

Just a reminder, to head off the inevitable flame war: the Gentleman's Contract are not the rules.

I've signed it, I think it is the way the game should be played, but they aren't the rules as defined in the SOPs.

We can debate that until the whole thing becomes "law", but until then, don't go waving your voluntary contract as if that's the law at TG.

Here's what I find amusing:

You feel that vertical capping is good. Yet DICE severely limited the ability to vertical cap flags, why? Because much like us, they felt is was an unintended byproduct of allowing helos in the game.

As for suicide jeeps, if you're not killing yourself, it's not a suicide, is it?

I don't get it. And I usually get jokes.

Yah it isn't a suicide jeep for crying out loud. I wait for things to come around and then I blow a jeep up. That isn't so bad!

Re: Gentleman's Contract and Me

I don't have anything against explosive jeeps or suicide runs. I've never signed the Gentleman's contract. I don't use suicide tactics but I don't mind anybody else using them.

Don't let it get to you. You didn't break any rules. In fact, the other TG member shouldn't make you feel like you're not TG material. There are going to be a lot of disagreements with tactics and we all should remember whether a rule is being broken before saying anything.

Re: Gentleman's Contract and Me

I have been here a long time. I have played a few different games here. I dont offer my views often but now...gotta do it.

I did not sign 'the' gentlemens contract. I DO NOT feel that there are proper ways to kill in war. If I can advance my sides objectives through my death, I will. I think the jeep loaded with explosives is a good tactic. Is not mining the ground deceptive? Then why not a jeep? I could go on and on.

I wont do the bunny hop thing... or whatever else is used for exploits.

All is fair in love and war.

Re: Gentleman's Contract and Me

Well, its a game. Loading a jeep with explosives does sound like a good idea to me. But then when it happens all the time it would be like being in the bombrun alley of DarkViper. Suicide should be discouraged - maybe you get a teamkill on yourself... In real life suicide is discouraged by pain, social/peer pressure, religion, etc. All things that don't count so much in BF2, so we have to recreate it. That brings the problem down to a feature for the Dice team.
In the meantime we have to set our own rules for the server. And I admit that I prefer to play without suicide bombers and drivers (and yes bomber airplanes too, but that's just because I suck at flying)

Re: Gentleman's Contract and Me

You should be able to take it as well as you dish it out.

Nobody is going to kick you for breaking the rules, because you are not. That other player has every right to call you lame if they think those tactics are lame, as a lot of people do. If he swears or vilifies you, that's another story and he'll get in trouble for it. There is nothing offensive in saying "you expect more."

Keep doing what you do if it floats your boat. Also expect to be treated like a pub by those who have signed the contract. I would expect someone with such a "do anything to win" attitude to have thicker skin.

I understand this to mean that it was a suicide jeep.. he destroyed himself.

You can reserve the right to use those tactics by not signing the contract, but I reserve the right to taunt you for using them. Seems "fair" to me, huh?

Oh yeah, it's fair. No doubt about it.

Re: Gentleman's Contract and Me

Mom's opinion is noted.

If you "expect more" from someone who's breaking a rule, feel free to notify an admin. If you "expect more" from someone who isn't, be prepared for your expectation to be ignored (or not), contract or not.
