Gameplay picking up on Server 2 : SF

Just thought I'd drop a quick note about what I noticed on Server 2 since SF came out a few days ago.

Gameplay seems to be picking up. Teh first two days, I think everybody can say we've seen weird things and almost no gameplay, which I think is totally normal because everybody wanted to see the new toys in action and have a feel on how they operate and we can do with them. But now that a pool of regulars (can I say that soo soon? lol) know the maps a bit better and how to handle the new equipment, these players are showing the way and teamwork is picking up nicely.

I personaly find SF to be quite enjoyable. It certainly is a breah of fresh air. The hook and the zip line are a lot of fun. I originaly thought they would be too gadgety. But they work very well, bringing a new level of gameplay. People are trying new startegies with them and it's a lot of fun to defend against these strategies or be part of them as an attacker.

I've noticed the numbers of players is still quite small on Server two, most of the time around 20-30 players total at peak hours. Then again, it was Thanksgiving yesterday, so it surely affected the numbers. The numbers is not a big problem at the moment, since the maps in rotation often are at 16 players size. I didn't think they would still be fun at that number of players, but it does work surprisingly well.

I am personaly not a big fan of night maps, but it's always been like that in pretty much all games that feature them. Of the three night maps, I find the airport map to be the most enjoyable.

Anyways, just thought I'd post a positive note about SF and Server 2. I know some people were discouraged lately by the lack of gameplay. Again, it seems to be picking of quite nicely!

See you on the Battlefield!

Re: Gameplay picking up on Server 2 : SF

Yeah we're gonna have to discuss the map rotation after a few days/weeks of playing with a more populated server. I think most of the night maps suck. Night Flight was pretty fun last night but it was probably because we had 16 players only. Leviathan sucks...I thought it would be fun but it's not. Devil's Perch I have mixed opinions of. The first time I played it I hated it because we lost the top part of the map and just got raped from above, the other 2 times I made sure we kept the asylum/church and it was more enjoyable...for me, I don't know about the other team, but it ended pretty close.

We should also remove artillery on every map. My opinion is that Leviathan should be removed from the rotation, and the Iron Gator map as well. I would love to see some BF2 maps converted to work with SF but I played around in the editor with Karkand last night and when opened with the editor in SF mode, the CPs disapeared and when I made new CPs I couldn't assign a team to them, there simply wasn't any teams to choose from in the level settings. But then again I'm still a newb to modding BF2. Maybe Duke/Asch could figure it out.

I don't think you can convert vanilla maps to SF:

I didn`t know the original BF2 maps were not SF compatible. Man, you'd think that they would make sure the original maps played with the new upgrades! That is sad news...

Hopefuly someone will be able to convert them. It would certainly be very cool to be able to play the orignial maps but with the new toys.

I get the feeling that i am the only person on all of TG that likes the night maps, i dont know why but i think its a nice change i wouldnt want to play it all day but with only 3 of the 8 maps they just seem right and i like being sneaky.

Don't forget to stop by server 1 so that we see some action there. Let's work some of that turkey off today!

Re: Gameplay picking up on Server 2 : SF

I like SF and all the maps, but man do I suck at it. I'm talking more than my general BF2 suckitude. I am getting used to it though (sucking that is).

It is definitely a very different game. I like the stealth aspect, but on dark maps I am constantly being killed by people I don't know are there. If I toggle on night vision, I get to look at green scenery after being killed by people I don't know are there.

So far, I haven't seen very effective defense by anyone. I think that's because we are in the learning stages and because we are playing maps with too many CP's for the number of people. Defending the Asylum has been the best I've seen so far, but it felt like it was only possible because of the limited access to the hill.

It will get better, I'm sure.

Re: Gameplay picking up on Server 2 : SF

Oh and about the artillery. I agree that it seems out of place in SF. How many palaces use artillery on their own roof to clear away pesky attackers? :P

Removal of the CO position on some maps is a possible TG mod which we will discuss in further detail soon.

Please do not judge maps on win or loose experience. I pretty much like them all. Let us just leave them all for now and I am sure you will like them more after we all pick up some good games with more players on both teams. I agree on the arty, some of the maps are very small and artillery imo just do not belong there.

You are not the only one. I think they are awesome and I could play them all the time.

Re: Gameplay picking up on Server 2 : SF

I'm not judging maps by score, but Devil's Perch seemed pretty unbalanced the first time I played it because we got stuck at the bottom flags. The Iron Gator is the worst map ever made though and I can't understand how anyone can possibly think it's balanced in a TG setting. It was obviously designed as a free for all deathmatch kind of map. Any organized team can effectively seal the carrier with the Phalanx gun and Apache on top and the fact there's only 1 entry point from the water and that you cant use grapple hooks while in a boat.

The Phalanx actually reaches and locks on helos ON the MEC Helipad. Even if you respect the UCB camping rules, the attack helo will have no chance of doing anything to the ship because it's going to have a constant lock on it, then you have the Apache easily taking down the transport chopper, boats and the Hind. It's a stupid map, MEC is just fodder for SEALs.

Iron Gator can grow on you.. If you can a flag ont eh carrier, it can be a pretty interesting fight. Just before we had a pretty fun time riding the elevator up to take the flight deck... I hated it the first couple of times, but I think it has potential now.

I like the maps, I like the new strats, I like the sneakyness and the night fighting. That Carrier map is a little tough to get a toe hold, just have to go with numbers.

Best Defense has been at that 3 story palace with the dual flags on either wing. Assylum defense has been ok. The nuclear silo map features some good High/Low battles.

Really enjoy the expansion and plan on being on there again shortly!
