Question How do we make new players stay at TG?

Recently there has been a huge recruiting campaign to get more players to the TG world. Many newcomers have been joining the servers the last nights. I had a bad feeling when the Special Forces pack came out that it would it split the TG world in half. So far that has not happened. The server 1 has about the number of player that we had before the Special Forces pack.

But with so many new comers to the TG world, it makes it more important for us regulars to ensure that the high standards and good teamwork is applied at all times. We want new players to come and enjoy the sweetness of the TG world again and again. So how should ensure this?
  • Make TG-learn squads. The regular SL’s should try to make TG learning squads so that the new comers could get into them and learn the TG way. It is important that these squads are not filled with only regular players.
  • Ordinary squads filled with only TG regulars. Try to get at least 1-2 non-regulars into a squad. I would have no problem if the SL asked me to step out, so the squad could take inn non-regulars. Invite new players over to you.
  • CO – Sometimes we do not have a CO on a team. It should be a responsibility to fill the CO chair at all times. It is often better to have a CO than no CO at all. Perhaps the well known CO’s could try to get in the CO chair at least for 1 map a night.
  • Admin presents – A single player can easily ruin game play for many players. We have to ensure that we have admin presents both early and late US primetime.
  • Read rules and SOAP’s. As a wearer of a TG tag you has to have read and understood the rules, but when did you refresh the rules? If you can the rules you could better guide the newcomers when they have some questions.
  • Team speak – If people are on TS it is easier to communicate between players when questions arise. Information are spread in TS when the server is restarted, that information could have been spread to the rest of the squad if you were on TS.
  • Help new comers feel welcome. Take care of them when they join up with you. And have patient with them.

Re: How do we make new players stay at TG?

I played yesterday leading a "learn TG" squad for quite a while.

I popped in a few squads at the start of the game that didn't have any familiar faces, listened for a bit to see if they were communicating or coordinating, and if they weren't (none of them were) I said over VOIP that I was creating a "learn TG" for all interested. Filled up in seconds, then went around leading as I usually do.

Some of the guys were actually pretty damn good.

Re: How do we make new players stay at TG?

Good post, percu.

We have to start with the position that Tactical Gamer is not for everyone, so the real question is, not "how can we get players to stay", but "how can we get players that would be an asset to the community to stay". Two different things, I think.

This should go without saying, particulalry for tag wearers. I don't see that many issues with TG regulars, but it doesn't mean that we cannot improve.

I like the idea of TG-LEARN squads, and will start one if there isn't one already. I don't think the squad needs to be completely noobie, as I'd like to have a Sergant to guide my second fireteam, but it should not be full of regulars.

If you don't know how to manage a squad, please learn.

Agreed. Inviting new players in is an important step in recruiting for inhouse squads.

On our servers, there should never be an empty CO chair. I don't care if the guy is new or not: a tactical server needs a CO.

That said, Tactical Gamer regulars need to be very patient with new players that hop in the chair. I've seen alot of mutiny votes lately, and that is UNACCEPTABLE.

Give the man or woman a chance and follow the damn orders and play out the map. Or leave. Mutiny votes by TG regulars and tag wearers makes us look immature, especially when noone steps in to take their place.

We have plenty of admins, and they are all on Teamspeak. There is no problem with coverage, only with reporting.

Good point. Keeping the SOPs fresh in your mind is a good thing to do.

Agreed in principle, but we can't let things get too far. I don't think players whose only skill appears to be ramming a jet into a tank or linebacker will be here for long.

yep, yep hear ya...

But you know some new guys are just too new... They have that pubbie server mind.

Couple of nights ago I had this guy hop into my squad... I notice him going off so much. So I said "If you are going to go off by yourself leave the squad. If you want to stay you gotta stick with me". He was an old guy not some kid. He was mature. He tried to stick with me. And then goes off again, and again... Finally I had to kick him out. saying "Allright man, find a different squad. I need someone else."

I know you guys dont know me very well, but the mentality for tactical gameplay is outstanding here. Cing knows me, we were in the Marine Corps together, different units, but the same time, all respect to satcom cing. a squad is actually about 13 Marines, the fireteam is the smaller 4 man team, fireteam leader rifle w/ grenade launcher, two riflemen with assualt rifles, and a machine gunner. Whenever you guys are going to practice, please let me know, i would love to play with you.

And that should also be ok. Your tried your best to get the man into your squad. When someone is not following the SL you have 2 choices either to get on TS to get admin help, or to kick them out of the squad.

Tnx man

I am completely with you. But before we know if they would fit into the TG way we have to let them try.

Re: How do we make new players stay at TG?

Well I just joined up yesterday after reading a lot of the posts here the past week or so. I've only played the game for about 5 weeks off and on and thought I was having a good time on the public servers. In th egames I had played in I hardly ever had any type of team thing going on. I always joined a team but never had any direction or much of anything other than maybe jumping in a Tank or Humvee and manning the .50 while the driver drove to whatever point he wanted.

Yesterday I joined the boards and last night played on the TG server for the first time. I joined a squad and although I don't have a mic or headset I had the speakers turned up to hear the SL orders. I tried my best to follow his orders and direction and I had the BEST TIME YET !! I was so hooked after that hour of battle that I came back to the forums and became a supporting member for a whole year right away !

I'm going to do my best to stay active on the forums and on the servers and to at least do my best.

So as far as keeping members, I'm here to stay and play and contribute in anyway I can.

Thanks for your ear and your time : )

Re: How do we make new players stay at TG?

I totally agree with Percu, I have been here for a couple of months and I'm trying to start learning to be a SL and have even CO'd a map. It's very intimidating being a new guy, new SL, new CO with all of the great tactical minds here at TG. I have had the pleasure of being in some squads with great SL's that have taught me a lot. But I still have a lot of learning to do.

You can read all the post on the forums but experience is the most valuable and learning from the experienced is even more valuable. I think a good idea for new SL'ers is if you are going to create a squad, name the squad "new SL" so guys know your new and learning. You will find that some of the best people to learn from will join and help you. Just make sure your ready to SL, be a grunt for a while and get a feel for how things work.

maybe we need to get a squad of people that would lead Tg-Learn all the time....so that we have a TG-learn Squad or 2 on the server at all times....great posts to everyone...

Re: How do we make new players stay at TG?

yeah, i think it's important to be patient... if someone is doing something dumb, don't just type "get out of my helo"... or "don't bomb ucb".. be a little verbose explaining rules at least once... (people aren't going to head to tg.com to read SOPs mid round) also, briefly explain WHY the rule's there...

"it's fine if you want to fly, you just need to join GUNSHIP squad so we can talk"

or

"please do not spawn-camp uncapturable bases - its a server rule for better game play and is strictly enforced"

or

"please don't jump around while shooting - it's a server rule for more realistic gameplay and is strictly enforced"

... last night for example, there was a pilot on one round that wouldn't stop bombing ucb... (he got a lot of attention on TS) anyway - in the very next round i was happy to see that he'd joined my TACTICS squad on daqing.. w/ LuckyShot in the chair and 4 'visitors' + 1 other |TG| our squad, we had a GREAT time and kicked some serious ass... anyway, the point is that w/ a little feedback a ucb-bomber can be 'converted'....

lol - actually, mid round, one of the squadies said "whoops, i just bunny hopped sorry about that!"... we all laughed and I told him "don't worry about it - it's a knee-jerk reaction that you'll eventually loose, just try not to..."

Yep, we all fall off the wagon at times.

Re: How do we make new players stay at TG?

No new people! Server always full!

I'm just kidding. I sort of feel like anyone mature enough to play the TG way willi instantly fall in love with the server the minute they hear about it, and when they join they'll see that it really is the wonderland they imagined. To that end, instead of a bunch of TG learn squads, it makes more sense just to run around the internet saying "Tactical Gamer is the best teamplay server there is." That's how I found this place, and I think anyone who checks us out after hearing that is the sort of person who would be a great additiont to the community, as opposed to anyone we can convince by getting them in our squad on pubby or something.

As one of these newcomers i couldn't agree more. i have been playing quite a bit lately on the BF1 server and have yet to come across one of these LEARN squads. Luckily there have always been a lot of TG members on and i have managed to pick up a lot from them in this short time.
In the last few days i have been in squads with Coridon, Dark Viper, Drizzid and many more i can't remember and all have immediately treated me as part of the squad, some even giving praise for some actions (i remember taking out a tank at long range with a AT missile i had to bend round a corner which was greeted with cheers from some squad members)

i think this is a great idea Trooper, i am sure it would fill up on every map.

Just keep doing what you are doing and i am sure TG will keep attracting new players all the time. I am gonna recommend it to a number of friends i play with regularly and i'm pretty sure they will join up as well.
