TeamSpeak Etiquette

Ok everyone, don't take this the wrong way, but I have to lay down a bit of TeamSpeak Etiquette smack:

The general TeamSpeak channels are there primarily to bring problem players to the attention of admins, maybe have a joke between rounds and take the odd cheap shot at your opponent.

I'd like to emphasise how important it is that these communications stay brief and succinct. I am seeing an increase in people using the default community channels to inform us of their new video card purchase or discuss game logistics at length. This is unacceptable. There are others in the channel playing the game and concentrating on the task at hand. Many people already have 5 other voices in their ear. A bunch more talking rubbish is very distracting and ruins the enjoyment of the game.

So, before you open that TeamSpeak mic channel, please ask yourself the following:
  1. Am I going to say something for longer than 5 seconds?
  2. Can my question be answered in the forums?
  3. Am I interrupting gameplay with lengthy frivolities?
  4. Am I whining?

If the answer to any of the above is 'yes', then consider the following:

If it can't be answered very briefly, then please by all means ask if an admin can join you in a private channel to help. The community channel is not for conversations, but the admins are also there to help, so don't be afraid to ask one specifically. I'll get cranky with someone who asks any question on TeamSpeak default channels which is answered in a sticky within the BF2 forums or is in the announcements forum. I will always respond if someone asks me to join them in another channel however.

Thanks

Re: TeamSpeak Etiquette

+rep for this! I'm an admin and I mute TS because of all the talking while in game. Got a problem that needs an admin's attention and I'm the only admin on? Guess what? You're going to be SOL. I'm with Bom on this, general chat during the game needs to be cut waaaaay down.

You could move to an admin channel so at least those who need to get in contact with you still can. Or punish those talking too much and ban them from TS for awhile.

Re: TeamSpeak Etiquette

I agree with Bom and more of what JMJ said. There are times when there is way to much chatter going. We are not going to move to another channel as it is our job to manage and admin the game. There are other channels which can be used for chit chat.

You can't do that if one mutes themselves. I agree you shouldn't have to change channels, but an admin can't mute themselves, either. Those who talk need to be banned if they don't stop after a warning. It'll stop quickly, then.

Re: TeamSpeak Etiquette

Great Post! I rarely sign-on to TS or when I do I mute for this very reason. Unfortunately our friendly admin's can't do the same.. so please give them a break and take all non-admin or direct game discussions elsewhere! If we can keep the chatter down I wouldn't mind being on the TS server more often.

Re: TeamSpeak Etiquette

I don't mind basic chatter, as I keep my TS volume turned down a bit (sorry, I can't hear you when I'm in a helo or jet), but we don't need people giving a play-by-play of their game. If your connection drops from TS in the middle of the game, you might want to think about what you were saying before the disconnection.

When I'm not in game I'll kick people from TS for things like this. I've booted people who have open mics and don't bother to close them after being warned. However, when I'm in game it's not so easy to alt-tab out of the game to kick people off TS or change channels, so I go into mute mode. It's not my responsibility to change channels to avoid this, it's other people's responsibilities to use TS at TG the way it was intended for the given game. If you want to chat, go find another channel.

Re: TeamSpeak Etiquette

I have a combination of keys bound to raise or lower my TS volume in the event it gets too chatty. Just another method to use if anyone is taking notes.
It's already been said but it shouldn't get that way so often. Use one of the 30 other BF2 TS channels if you want to talk.

Re: TeamSpeak Etiquette

Yes, this is why I don't often join the teamspeak channel in game. As an SL, another voice comm just mucks things up even more.

Even between rounds, after loading is done, while we are waiting for round start I need to be talking to my squad about kits etc, during this time everyone is blabbing away in TS and I can't hear my in game comms at all. It's a problem, to be sure.

How often have you honestly warned individuals to stop talking and they've continued? It's never happened to me.

They stop when asked, for the time being. Then it's back to old ways the next day. Like I said, when I'm not gaming I can do whatever needs to be done, but when gaming I don't have time to start barking at people on TS. My mute key combo works much faster.
