Targeting - Aiming
So I've learned something after playing with you guys this week. I have a long way to go before I master the skill of proper targeting and long distance or close range shooting.
It seems that when I am shot, I die in one or two hits, playing as SpecOps mainly I realize I have no armor, and I might last a shot longer playing as assualt or another class. Then I find that when I shoot someone else, and drop to the floor, I half to unload half a clip before they might go down and usually I go down before them. Same goes when I am a sniper. So I was wondering, because I havn't played BF2 long enough (2 months now) to know all there is to know about the game. Is there bullet trajectory? Do I need to compenstate for the distance and aim higher then the cursor target shows? I started to aim for the head recently since I did read somewhere that a head shot does more damage. Yet, still when I aim with my gun, I don't know if I should be aiming above the enemies head or right at the enemy's head, because I can not tell when I hit my target. I wish there was a target practice range like in America's Army. I also don't have this problem when I play UT2k4, I know where to shoot my guns and in Counter-Strike I know the target is off a little, so I guess I still have yet to get the proper "feel" for the guns and hoping you guys could help me out some. |

Hey Mastro. You've killed me pretty often in the times I've seen you on! I think from close to medium range you don't necessarily have to worry about compensating for drop. At a significantly longer range esp. for sniper, you definitely have to compensate for it, as there is a considerable amount.
Going prone can either make you or break you depending on how well you can aim. You don't necessarily have to compensate for any drop, but you do have to remember that as you go prone, your head is what the bullet will hit because it's the most exposed area of your body when prone. It's mostly about practice and experience. If you feel like you need more practice outside of in-game play, check out the TG-Irr practices. If I'm not mistaken they hold open practices for anyone interested including the irregulars. GL |

Firing without iron sights is generally a lot less accurate. Standing accuracy in this game is a joke and so is crouched accuracy, it's prone or nothing really. The iron sights are also not very accurate on the MEC guns. There is bullet drop but it's so minor you never have to actually compensate for it.

I always play on single shot, its more accurate and i can fire at 2/3 the rate of autmatic if I want
I use iron sites 70% time when shooting At longer range on single shot I generaly shoot at their belly button for more accuracy If its very close range (4m, 12 ft) I dont use ironsite and dance left & right as firing, at this range if they have iron sites on my dancing makes their aim difficult If its very very close range (1.5m, 4ft) and they go prone, I advance to their side and shoot down on them, they cant turn on the floor quick enough and get disorientated Also when you and they are prone I aim at where there body touches the ground for 70% accuracy. I suggest you play against bots to practice single shot and see what its like I also use the feedback mechanism of knowing when I hit a lot, thats the little yellow cross that appears in your sites when you hit

I second the recommendation for playing the bots. I actually had to play for 2 months off line and I think that really helped me to learn the "feel" of the weapons before picking up bad habits online. And also, I would recommend getting to know the handguns very well. It can be your best friend!

Your most important skill is not how to beat another player in a face to face shoot up, but rather how to avoid those situations and get yourself in position to have the jump on someone.

You definitely need to compensate for bullet drop as a sniper at long ranges. I've noticed it at 200m and greater distances. At 400m it's a pretty significant compensation. As others have said, and any distance going prone is really the best way to hit your target with any amount of accuracy. I also tend to put all guns on single shot unless I am in CQB.

Some tips:
- Crouch or go prone when aiming. The size of your reticule when firing will give you an idea of accuracy. - Single shot for aiming, short bursts for rapid fire. - Never full auto unless you are suppressing with a support gun or 50cal. - Imagine a line running from the waist of your target up the sternum to the top of the head. Aim along that line. Don't go for the knees. - Lead your target, but only a little. Learn the particular cone of fire for each weapon. - Don't use a short range weapon for a distant target. - If you can, wait for a clean shot rather than firing immediately. - Stay calm. - Learn fire discipline. Situational awareness and the ability to remain undetected will make you far deadlier than marksmanship alone. - Learn to coordinate fire with your teammates.

I always put single shot on by mistake just before I round a corner and face someone. Either that, or I start reloading my gun, thinking "nobody will be close right now". I can't tell you how many times I've danced around in front of someone, wishing I could return fire. That's my technique for losing.

Hehe, I hate it when somebody pops up and I'm reloading. I also hate it when I forget that I have siongle fire on. I can hear gun fire, but that is my enemies, and I don't realise that I am just standing there not doing anything until it's too late

Thanks for all the replies I'll have to test out some of the suggestions. I did have some basic question which probably sound dumb.
What is iron sites? Is that the normal site on the screen? or is it something else? I've never notice I don't think feedback on my target, telling me if I've hit my target or not, I'll have to keep an eye out for that next time I load it up. Thanks for all tips, I'll keep practicing. |

Iron Sights is zoomed-in mode. You are much more accurate this way, but you move slowly and your field of vision is reduced.
edit: Bah, Kilrogg. When you do damage (from any source) to a target in normal BF2, you should see an "x" appear around your reticule. Switching to another color in the options menu might make this more visible. However, in Tactical Mod this feature has been removed.
