Saw him on line 6th Feb. That's about it.

Re: How long does it take to load a new map?
My load times are about 2 minutes average, so I generally light a cig during the last 10-ticket countdown, hit the bathroom after checking the scores and get back during the Commander selection.

Re: How long does it take to load a new map?
My load times are generally around 45 seconds. 35 for the map to load and then 10 for the "verifying client data" part.

Guys, if the kids or wife are sick of the one-minute check-in, play a map, knock off for a real dinner, Make sure you help clear the table and load dishes/wipe counters/sweep floor (or commit to doing one of those later as your share). You'll have missed one map! Then play another map or so, hop up and help put the kids to bed, and then: a. give your wife a 20 and say "honey, you've been working hard; you go have fun, and I'll stay with the kids" b. Offer to stay with the kids while she goes to the gym/swimming pool/goes for a walk (exercise releases endorphins, she comes back feeling relaxed, happy and empowered, with firmer abs/thighs/derriere--bonus! c. Remind her that that show she likes is coming on. d. Suggest she do something she's been putting off, then let her off the hook and she'll find something else to do. At LEAST once or twice a week just stay with her when she's expecting you to go off and play. When she asks you if you're going to go "play your game with your friends" (it sounds so juvenile If you play your cards right, you'll have spent some real quality time with the fam, she'll be having fun and relaxing, you'll have a couple hours left to play, and occasionally she'll interrupt you by walking in in heels, lipstick and rather naughty knickers! True story, more than once, and I always make sure to drop a few sly comments to the guys I'm playing with as I'm leaving so she can hear: "<sigh> welllll, sorry guys, you know I hate to leave...but if you could see what my wife just walked in wearing, you wouldn't blame me..."--makes her giggle like a schoolgirl! Word to the wise: I don't make any jokes about "infiltrating an exposed flank" or leaving to "test the power of my TaiPo Dong". ![]()

I hadn't seen Jimmy's post before. Brilliant.
Oh yeah...just so it's not a hijack, ram helps load times. ![]() Cheers,

Like you, I have a Core2Duo system with a pair of raptors (Raid 0). I wonder if we're talking the same thing here, 'cause thats a big difference. Cheers,

Re: How long does it take to load a new map?
Yeah, makes sense. I was always testing 'first map load', and as you "Timings from clicking join server to join game appearing".
Cheers,

Re: How long does it take to load a new map?
AMD +3000 Athlon XP( I know older than dirt)
1.5 GB of 333Mhz memory ATI AIW X800XT 256MB video card Windows XP Pro /SP2(home runs BF2 slower, go figure) 1 20 Gb 7200 RPM Hard Drive 1 80 Gb 7200 RPM Hard Drive Ok, now I have my system specs up there. I have found out by trial and error what loads BF2 the best for my computer. The 2 hard drives is very important to me. Reason? I really dunno know except that I have Windows running off the 20 Gb hard drive and then all my games are installed on the second hard drive, which if you think about it the hard drives head or whatever it is called does not need to search over the disc to find the info for the game and run Windows at the same time. 2 hard drives means one can be running Windows and the other running whatever game with less time being wasted. Windows Xp Home runs BF2 slower also, longer load times on my maps. So I run Pro now to help those couple milliseconds. Another thing is, I use a defrag program that allows me to organize where the data is stored on the hard drives, it is called Disktrix UltimateDefrag. With this, I just organize the data on the first HDD to have the most recently accessed data towards the outer side of the disc(runs Windows smoother), on the second HDD I have it set to where BF2142 is on the outer most part of the HDD, then BF2, followed by Project RealityMod, then all other unimportant games. The outer most part of the HDD is what is the fastest and takes less time of course to access the data needed to run a game(sure I could load even fater if I put BF2 in front of BF2142). So, my slow processor does not really play that much of an important role in loading a map as it is with my HDD's being configured properly. I have seen people with newer and a lot faster computers take twice as long to load a map cause they have their 320Gb or larger single HDD with it's single head trying to read multiple jobs and also with their 4 megs of RAM. Size is not important here, it is speed of HDD and where or how organized that HDD is. I would like to get 2 10,000 RPM Raptors, I would try the RAID 0 array and see if that would be any faster than just setting them up as 2 normal HDD's as I already have my present configuration. Sticky, not positive if you remember me or not, but anyway you should know I am almost in game real soon after you are. |
