Post [Map] PR - 'Udairi Desert'

Dear PR community,

After playing the best mod in the world (Project Reality offcourse) since 0.5 I've always loved the teamwork aspect the most and after the addition of the SOFLAM laser designator for the A-10 and other jets, 'Kashan Desert' 64 became my favorite map.

Now, I am thinking of giving back to the community by doing a huge desert map myself.

My idea is basically Kashan 64 on steroids, with lots of burned out vehicles and open ground battlefield for massive armor battles. With teamplay and tactics in mind.. Based on the Iraqi / Kuwait desert with burned out vehicles on and along roads. Think Gulf war..... Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom.

The thing is... I have zero experience in mapping or modding (Okay, maybe C&C Red Alert )
BUT: The PR community is a very strong and motivated one, and just like while playing this awesome game online:

"It's all about teamwork."

Thats why I am posting this message as a proposal, I'd love to hear what everybody thinks about a map like this.
I think getting started with the BF2 Editor and creating the map itself wouldn't be a problem, with the help of Rhino's and other tutorials. But the coding and PR-specific changes could pose a bit sticky for me...

*Anyone with the knowledge and experience willing to contribute to this great game is very welcome to help me/us out.*

Here are is my VERY early map spec with ideas:

---------------------------------------------------

Game: Project Reality
Desert map: (WIP)
Name: 'Udairi Desert' (or: Killing Fields, Operation: Brown Out, Operation: Dust Off, Operation: Al Basrah Freedom, Black Sands, Burning Oil, Sandstorm, )
Size: 4 km
Type: AAS (?)
Focus: Massive vehicle heavy desert warfare. Teamwork & Tactics,
Factions: USMC vs. MEC

Start date: Friday Januari 16th, 2009

Assets: (Really rough spec. not all will go in final map.)

• 1 ~ 2 A-10 Thunderbolt II (64)
• 1 ~ 2 F-16 Falcon / F/A-18 Hornet / F-15 Strike Eagle
• 1 ~ 2 V-22 Ospreys
• 1 ~ 2 CH-47 Chinooks
• 2 ~ 3 UH-60 Black Hawks
• 1 ~ 3 AH-64 Apache's (32&64?)
• 4 ~ 8 M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tanks
• 1 ~ 2 M109 Paladin Howitzer's (This mobile artillery piece would be perfect for this map and really require teamplay!)
• 2 ~ 5 M2A2 Bradley IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) APC's
• 2 ~ 4 M1126 Stryker ICV's
• 2 ~ 3 HMMWV's (Humvee)
• 1 ~ 2 TOW HMMWV's
• 2 ~ 4 FAV/DPV buggies (Desert Patrol Vehicle)
• 2 ~ 3 Transport Trucks
• 2 ~ 3 Commander Trucks
• 1 ~ 3 ATV's (Quad)

Features:

- Small villages.
- A larger town/city.
- Refinery and/or Oil storage
- 2 ~ 4 Civilian car's.
- Burning oil pumps. (like in Kashan & Al Kufrah)
- Lots of destroyed vehicles along (main) roads.
- Many 'sandtrack-roads'.
- Underground bunkers,
- Fort
- USMC camps (barbed wire, containers, tents, sandbags, simple re-deployable buildings).

Additional info:

- Main focus: armor and CAS based warfare. (Kashan on steroids!)

-

Progress:

Start date: Friday Januari 16th, 2009

- Research.
- Location scouting.

---------------------------------------------------

I'd love to know what you think...

*** If anyone would like to help out or bring suggestion to the table, please let me know ***

Suggestions, ideas and reference material are all welcome.

Note: This would be my first map ever, and I have no prior experience in mapping/modding what do you this my chances are??

---------------------------------------------------

ADDED after initial replies:

I see some of you already came up with some great idea's and suggestions and I'm certainly going to use some of those tips.

I am grateful for al you reactions, please keep 'em coming.

Having said that,... My intention for the original post is to: A) give the PR community the chance to help bring suggestions to the table that no one person could have ever though of, thus creating a map we can all be proud of and provide new gameplay to this awesome game.

But most importend: B) Find persons who are willing to help out on the coding and advanced mapping and bug testing/fixing. Keep in mind I never made a map before.

But that should NOT hold us back, after all many player love intense infantry combat but there is nothing like massive vehicle warfare with tank- teams working together and CAS roaring above, striking with pinpoint precision on a team-mates painted target.

A lot of people will love the immense desert terrain and large scale armor and airborne warfare. That's why I know taking the time to learn to map for PR will be deeply rewarding for all of us.
But I know I can't do this by myself. That's why I am seriously requesting everyone who did this kind of thing before to contact me and we'll get this puppy rolling.

PS: As I said, I appreciatie al the great tips. I hate to come of as a hardheaded FNG but I'd REALLY love to start with this one awesome map and not have players waiting longer than they absolutely have to. (not compromising in quality offcourse) Starting of with a 'regular' 4km map is insane I know but a desert map with large terrain specific cap zones, such as a mountain pass, bridge and oilfields is basically a large bucket of sand with two main bases (really basic I know, offcourse there will be many more little details.)

That's why going for the big 4km map doesn't sound al that bad it could/should be done in have the time it takes a map like Muttrah City or Korrengal Valley, with are AWESOME maps but require much more work to create.

So mappers..... help me out guys (insert: Puppy-Look-Smily)

PPS: the assets are not final, As long I get my A-10 roaring from above. (I love to lase them tanks, I never even flown one!)

• 2 ~ 4 FAV/DPV buggies (Desert Patrol Vehicle)
• 2 ~ 3 Transport Trucks
• 2 ~ 3 Commander Trucks
• 1 ~ 3 ATV's (Quad)
What IMO would make a more reasonable option :

Air power (64) :

• 3 A-10 Thunderbolt II / Su-25 Frogfoot (Spawn delay/time : 15 minutes)
• 2 F-16 Falcon / MiG-29 Fulcrum (Spawn delay/time : 13 minutes)
• 2 UH-60 Black Hawk / UH-1N "Huey" / Mi-17 Hip (Spawn time : 7 minutes)
• 2 AH-64 Apache / AH-1Z Super Cobra / Mi-28 Havok (Spawn time 15 minutes)
• 5 M1A2 Abrams / T-72M1 (Spawn time : 4 minutes)
• 2 M2A2 Bradley / BMP-3 (Spawn time : 2 minutes)
• 3 M6 Linebacker / Tungaska (Spawn delay/time : 10 minutes)
• 2 Humvee Avenger / Gaskin (Only spawn once at round start)
• 2 HMMWV / BRDM-2 / Vodnik (Spawn time : 20 minutes)
• 4 Transport Truck (All) (Spawn time : 2 minutes)
• 4 Logistics Truck (All) (Spawn time : 10 minutes)

Alternative, less air more ground (32) :

• 1 A-10 Thunderbolt II / Su-25 Frogfoot (Spawn delay/time : 25 minutes)
• 2 UH-60 Black Hawk / UH-1N "Huey" / Mi-17 Hip (Spawn time : 5 minutes)
• 2 AH-64 Apache's / AH-1Z Super Cobra / Mi-28 Havok (Spawn delay/time 20 minutes)
• 6 M1A2 Abrams / T-72M1 (Spawn delay/time : 8 minutes)
• 3 M2A2 Bradley / BMP-3 (Spawn time : 5 minutes)
• 4 M1126 Stryker / Vodnik / BRDM-2 (Spawn time : 2 minutes)
• 1 M6 Linebacker / Tungaska (Spawn delay/time : 30 minutes)
• 2 Humvee Avenger / Gaskin (Spawn time : 10 minutes)
• 2 Humvee / BRDM-2 / Vodnik (Spawn time : 15 minutes)
• 4 Transport Truck (All) (Spawn time : 5 minutes)
• 4 Logistics Truck (All) (Spawn time : 10 minutes)

Mostly infantry based (16) :

• 4 UH-60 Black Hawk / UH-1N "Huey" / Mi-17 Hip (Spawn time : 10 minutes)
• 1 AH-64 Apache / AH-1Z Super Cobra / Mi-28 Havok (Spawn delay/time : 35 minutes)
• 2 M1A2 Abrams / T-72M1 (Spawn delay/time : 25 minutes)
• 1 M2A2 Bradley / BMP-3 (Spawn delay/time : 15 minutes)
• 6 M1126 Stryker / Vodnik / BRDM-2 (Spawn time : 5 minutes)
• 2 Humvee Avenger / Gaskin (Spawn delay/time : 20)
• 2 Humvee / BRDM-2 / Vodnik (Spawn time : 10 minutes)
• 4 Transport Truck (All) (Spawn time : 8 minutes)
• 2 Logistics Truck (All) (Spawn time : 15 minutes)

Note : When its "delay/time" i mean it doesnt spawn on round start, when its just "time" i mean it spawns on round start.

Re: [Map] PR - 'Udairi Desert'

Ok, well you shouldn't think of the assets yet (Besides armor map, no armor map). Second if you really want that many assets there would be about only 1 Inf squad. Now, if you want to keep it that way you should have less 1. control points 2. Much, much, much wider radiuses (even to about 400m-500m). That way the armor would have to take out the other armor to cap the flag. I hope this helped, but if you don't want it to be that way just have it your way then.

I will be frank with you, sir. This is a horrible asset list. Assuming every vehicle was fully manned, except for the DPVs, and there were no passengers, There are 36 spots to be filled, assuming you use the number of assets on the left hand column. Lets go through this asset-by-asset.

• 2 ~ 3 Transport Trucks

• 1 ~ 2 F-16 Falcon / F/A-18 Hornet / F-15 Strike Eagle There is no need for an air-superiority fighter. The MEC has no runway, thus no aircraft for an air-superiority fighter to contend with.

• 1 ~ 2 V-22 Ospreys
• 1 ~ 2 CH-47 Chinooks
• 2 ~ 3 UH-60 Black Hawks
Choose ONE. And there certainly shouldn't be four large transport helicopters out at once. If you choose the Blackhawk, then you can have multiple. However, should you choose a heavy-duty helicopter such as the Osprey or Chinook, it must be treated as an important asset to the team, not like the transport helicopters are now. There should only be one of these large helicopters. Can you imagine two Chinooks flying around at once on Kashan? It would be horrible. They would be shot down easily by tanks due to their size and the Devs will likely implement a high respawn time due to their importance as an asset.

• 1 ~ 3 AH-64 Apache's (32&64?) Don't combine Apaches with fixed wing. The A-10 makes it lopsided enough as it is
• 4 ~ 8 M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tanks Yeah, fine
• 1 ~ 2 M109 Paladin Howitzer's These don't exist yet in PR, and the Devs have made no mention of any intention to include a mobile artillery system

• 2 ~ 5 M2A2 Bradley IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) APC's
• 2 ~ 4 M1126 Stryker ICV's
Choose ONE. Don't have both.

• 2 ~ 3 HMMWV's (Humvee) There should be at maximum two on 32 and 64 layers. HMMWVs are for recon now.
• 1 ~ 2 TOW HMMWV's Nope. No TOWs. TOWs work on Qwai because of the urban and hilly landscape. A TOW moving across desert will soon be killed by a T72's superior optics. TOWs aren't meant to engage at ranges that PR simulates in its tank battles
• 2 ~ 4 FAV/DPV buggies (Desert Patrol Vehicle) These have long since been removed from PR
• 2 ~ 3 Transport Trucks
• 2 ~ 3 Commander Trucks
• 1 ~ 3 ATV's (Quad) Replace these with dirtbikes, and make at most two of them.

The result is this (assuming 64 layer)

Quote:
• 1 A-10 Thunderbolt II (64)
• 2 ~ 3 UH-60 Black Hawks
• 6 M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tanks
• 4 M2A2 Bradley IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) APC's
• 2 HMMWV's
• 2 Transport Trucks
• 2 Logistic Trucks
• 2 Dirtbikes (Quad)
Even in this list, there are 33 slots for manning vehicles. If we assume one dirtbike is on the field (spotter for A-10), no HMMWVs are used (as it should be), All four Bradleys are manned, All six Abrams are manned, both Blackhawks manned, and the A-10 flying, there are 24 positions. A proper layer should be one dirtbike, one in the A-10, 2 Bradleys manned, 5 Abrams in combat, two logi trucks, and both blackhawks are manned, there are about two full infantry squads on the field.
