Looking for map makers
I created a few maps for the BFV game a while back and wanted to get back into it for BF2. I wanted to put together a small team to create these maps. These maps would be made with TG in mind. We want to promote maps that require strategy & tactics & teamwork, none of the silly air only, armor only, stunt, etc. maps.
These would be something that we would could host on our servers and make them public for other servers.
So I'm looking for folks who have an interest in at least one of the following...
1) Map layout
2) Map design (visually appealing)
3) Map testers
And if it's possible to create custom models / skins within maps...
a) Object modellers
b) Skinners
I would want these maps to work on the standard BF2 servers. I'm not looking to create a full mod that changes physics, game dynamics, etc.

Re: Looking for map makers
Asch, I am up for layout and testing. I tried my hand at making a map but dont have enough time with school. I would be glad to help out with the layout and testing though.

Re: Looking for map makers
Asch I can help out with whatever is needed(dunno about modeling). Been workin abit with the map editor and stuff but I am willing to submit ideas, test, and help make some of these maps. Might take a little time im new to it but with help it cuold go faster. Just keep me in mind.
When I get home people'll ask me, "Hey, why do ya do it man? Why? Just some war junkie?" Ya know what I'll say? I won't say a goddamn word. Why? They won't understand. They won't understand why we do it. They won't understand that it's about the men next to you, and that's it. That's all it is.

I've started a wiki so I can start laying down some ideas. Feel free to check it out.

Re: Looking for map makers
awesome idea. i'm up for modelling although i have to warn you, i MUST, SIMPLY MUST have evian in my trailer, or i'll walk.
one thing i'd like to see is an "offense vs defense" map. this would be some sort of cappable base surrounded by forest/desert/cover. the main idea is the defensive team wouldn't have to go out and cap bases, only defend 1 or 2 within the main base.
i'm imagining some sort of compound in which the USMC has setup a base of operations. using the karkand environment and models, i'd place a group of hotel-like buildings in the center, surrounded by concrete barriers, guard towers, smaller bunkers, the chow hall, etc. chokepoints could include a front gate, delivery gate, holes in the chainlink or perhaps a large gaping (and still smoking) crater somewhere on the perimeter.
anyone remember or been to the "Khobar Towers" in Saudi Arabia? i spent a great deal of time there drawing out base defense SOP's (for fun) and really think it would be a fun map.
and can i just say that this is my 12th post?

Would you settle for a canteen of warm swamp water in your urine-scented bunker?

Re: Looking for map makers
asch: i'm going to start learning the map editor. i think using existing models from the current bf2 resources is a better start, for me anyway. perhaps the wiki could have a "maps under construction" section? sign me up for "Khobar Towers" map. i've thought it over and feel that it would be a fitting tribute to the 19 airmen and soldiers killed by that truck bomb; permitting USMC players some virtual payback.
turbo: thanks for the link, lots of good information there
i agree with all of the points listed in the poll, and think the proper approach is to first create the rough map, play it a few times, then refine and repeat. the benefit of this approach is that a more realistic map would reveal natural chokepoints, instead of engineering the perfect level playing field. as in war, troops adapt to their surroundings.
for example, lets imagine together an empty parking lot surrounded by chain link on the edge of a housing complex. one or two holes may exist in the fence, but you'd be foolish to run up to them in the open. a couple of snipers could be left to watch that spot or spots, preventing opfor from penetrating. now, as a map designer, i could put a couple of barrels or burning hummers to provide cover to the fence holes. to make it more "fair". but why do that? we all know that unconventional tactics can work. now imagine two FULL hummers come speeding through the parking lot, 50 cals blazing, smoke bombs... squads exit the hummers, provide covering fire from behind the hummers pinning down the snipers while a few squadmates slip through the hole. once inside, they find cover behind concrete barriers... and so on. which option would be more fun? EITHER. it comes down to teamwork, execution of a plan, luck and a thousand other variables which are constantly changing and evolving.
also, i'd place the artillery assets next to the enemy spawn. why? because i hate artillery.

Re: Looking for map makers
I was thinking something like Zatar Wetland on half the map rolling up into a city controlled by the MEC. Half Wetland's half Karkand so we could get a good variety of situations. Since most people like CQC I think we need to have some fierce choke points in the city to set up ambushes on convoys.

Re: Looking for map makers
i agree but was thinking more like 10% Zatar, 90% Karkand. i think the majority of people like city maps because of the close quarters. again, i think that chokepoints will naturally occur no matter if they are artificially introduced/designed or just left to materialize within the flow of battle. i prefer the natural ones, as tactics can change the meaning or importance of a certain location within different situations.

Re: Looking for map makers
I just had a thought which might be helpful for deciding where to go with this. We have a handy-dandy ATC server available. Do we have a way to upload sketches so that we can load them into ATC? We could load them up from the "Custom" section of the maps, then we could discuss the thoughts we have with some pictures.
I think Apophis might be able to make this possible for us. That would be very cool.Peace through fear... since 1947!
