    Map size, scale, low-res size?

One of the first steps in creating a map is to define the size. There are several parameters that you enter.

    Size (128, 256, 512, 1024)
    Scale (1, 2, 4...)
    Low-Res Size (128, 256, 512, 1024)

Not all options are available in any combination. What I'm trying to figure out is how do these settings affect performance and visual appearance?

I know that if you select size=256 and scale=2 then the map size = 512 meters. What is the difference between a size of 512 and scale of 1?

    What are optimum settings?

How does low-res size come into play?

Size is the number of grids.

Scale is the size of each grid in meters.

Low-res size is the size of the 8 surrounding secondary terrain meshes. Secondary terrain mesh is the terrain surrounding the map that you can see but never reach.

All that info came from the understanding heightmaps tutorial which is included in the mod tutorial pack.

Not sure. I started with 512x2 on the theory that I can get more done in a smaller map. I have read not to use the x4 option.

I read that the x4 causes crashes for many folks.

I guess what I want to know is if it's better to go 512x2 vs 1024x1? I want to balance the performance vs. visual appeal.

My computer ran out of virtual memory using x4 and it wouldn't let me save my progress. I have to start all over now. What size do you think they used for Zatar, im looking to make a map that size.

I read somewhere that all of the stock maps were size=512, scale=2... but that could be wrong. Remember that just because a map may be "large" you can restrict the combat zone (out of bounce) to a smaller area.

Map sizes 256, 512 and 1024 with x2 scale is the safest option. going to x4 causes problems with texturing and distance draw. The large maps in BF2 are generally 1024 with x2 scale. Also doing x4 size maps, especially with a map size of 1024 cause alot of editor slowdown when starting to place undergrowth and overgrowth and lot more when objects start to be added.
