    Map Idea: VMFA Carrier Battle Group

    The Pitch:
    USMC vs OpFor

    In this map, both sides start off with 2 carriers, each carrier equipped with 5 fighter jets apiece, a number of boats and possibly some APCs and helos. The idea is to get some major aerial combat going, with ship to ship battles, and infantry combat taking place in the largest indoor spaces available to date in BF2.

    One of the carriers for each side would be a UCB, leaving 2 out of the 4 points on the map as capturable. If a team controls both the capturable points, vehicles will only spawn for them at their UCB and 1 of the CPs.

    Plane spawns will be handled in a manner similar to that of the Chinese team on Dalian Plant - they will spawn on the same spot, one after the other, to avoid tragic crashes on the carrier decks.

    A large area of ocean will be available for maneuvering, to give the pilots maximum room to maneuver. Expect to see both AA guns in use (for once).

    Comments? Suggestions? How viable do you guys think this is?

    Sounds like a blast!
    But I'm not sure why you're limiting th spawning 1 jet at a time. The Essex can easily spawn 2 F-35s without causing crash issues. Reducing it to 1 will reduce the furballs in the sky.
    Now, if someone made a full Attack Carrier, rather than the small Amphib carrier that the Essex is, you could easily launch two hornets off the bow catapults, put 4 helos on each elevator, even throw an F-25 on the starboard fantail, and still keep the landing area clear for touch-and-go's - which means not using cats 3 and 4.

    Here's the problem: BF:1942 had a couple of air-only maps. They emptied the server faster than anything else. Keep in mind that MOST players can't or don't like flying.

    I think a good compromise would be on an island map like Midway. Plenty of room to have more aircraft in the air, but also some ground action for the grunts.

    Sorry, I wasn't clear in my description. I actually did mean to have 2 jet spawn points, but I guess I was a bit tired when I wrote my post. I also never realised that the Essex was a small carrier. Maybe with a bit of fiddling around in 3d max I could come up with an attack carrier. Hmm, something to try.

    As I said above, I probably wasn't too clear with my initial post. The idea of the map isn't simply to have an aerial fragfest, but to also have groundpounders fighting across the decks and nether regions of the ships. Or, to increase the importance of the troops, the actual capture point inside the ship could be deep inside, inaccessible to any wannabe vert cappers.

    Coral Sea was a badass map though, I liked it alot. The probably with bf 1942 was that the air to air sucked...

    Ah, that would be cool! Make 'em huge with CP's in and about them, kinda like that oilrig map from Desert Combat? That would be very sweet! I doubt that you'd be able to make the carriers "driveable", though...

    especially at that size. But maybe they could "drift" along a preset route during the course of the match?Would that be possible? It might make it a teeny bit harder for jets to land but it would make the battlefield a lot more interesting don't you think?

    I was actually considering that, but I'm not sure how I'd do that in the editor. I'll fiddle around a bit today and see if I can get the carriers to be driveable. That would rock -

    I don't know much about map making, but I think that spawnpoints and flags are designated by coordinates. Would that make things harder? I guess not, but I think you'd have to create a new vehicle, the supercarrier.

    Hmm..good point. Oh well, a driveable supercarrier would still kickass, and is what I'll probably spend the next week on :\

    Who would win if one carrier rammed the other? Everone would die and all CP's would be rendered useless. I don't think it would be possible to have the carrier be driveable and still put cp's on it for that reason. I think the best way to handle it would be to put the carriers "on rails" because who would want to drive something that moves that slow for the entire match anyway? You would have to accomodate all of the jets an helos resupplying and complaining about where you are and still drive the thing. maybe one large carrier on rails and one or two smaller driveable ones would be a better idea.You might have to modify the essex to make it driveable though. Give the driver access to some kind of weapon because otherwise the driving would be BORING.
