Need TG'ers suggestions on my map.

As you all know, there is a TG BF2 Map contest. I've started this map over about 4 times but now I think I got something decent. I'm now to the point where most of the map's general layout is done and I'm having trouble figuring out where to place the gameplay elements (Flags, distance and UCBs). Since this is a contest for a new map that we'll play on TG, I want to get input from fellow TG'ers to know what they want to see in the map.

Below you will find a download link to the map's alpha version. This is not suposed to be a "playable" version. The flags are where they are purely for testing purposes so I can "teleport" around the map while in-game. Nothing is set in stone.

I want you guys to tell me how you would do things if it was up to you. Where would you place the flags, what new areas would you create for those flags, where would you place UCBs (if any). I'm liking the village/suburbs area and I think it'll create a nice fighting area. I also like the US UCB and would like to make it a takeable flag but there needs to be something in between. Basically, I need to figure out some sort of symmetry so it doesn't become whack-a-mole or bleed doesn't own one team every time. I'd like to keep the map fairly small. The "South farm" CP is as far as I'd want to go vertically from the village. When coming up with ideas, keep in mind the map will not have any commander assets, so go wild with defensive positions or flanking positions and whatnot as you won't get arty'd or UAV'd.

Download:

http://www.tacticalsites.com/~kilrog...rest_alpha.zip
Unzip in Battlefield 2/mods/bf2/Levels.
Then in-game, Multiplayer-> Create Local-> scroll down to the map on left menu, Add Map-> Start Server

Screenshots:

Note: You can run the map at higher detail than you can run vanilla maps, it has a lot of trees yes but not many objects. Also make sure to have "Lighting" set to high as it makes everything look a lot prettier

If you want to point out a new area you'd like me to make, use this minimap and MS Paint or something and an image hosting service like http://www.imageshack.us (yes I know lots of trees and buildings are missing from minimap but cant fix that right now).

Thanks in advance

edit: Don't mind the terrain textures, they are leftovers from the old version of the map so theres rock textures in the middle of nowhere and grass everywhere. Textures is what I do last.

Oooh, nice. I have already stopped making my map, I have other stuff to do (exams coming up), and I wouldn't be able to do as good as that. I will download your map and give some suggustions.

(By the way you didn't do the link to the minimap properly)

Fixed

Btw I'm aware this thread is in General Discussion and if the admins don't mind I would like it to stay here. There aren't many people who read the Maps & Mods forum and those that do are people who are interested by mapping/modding. I want to get the opinions of the average TG player as well and not just people who like modding.

Hey kilrogg...I would love to playtest this thing...one thing however...

Do I unzip it to my "battlefield2/mods" folder or do I do it somewhere else...I know I have read it before, but am unsure as of right now...

thanks..

Yeah sorry I probably should have said that...

In your "battlefield2/mods/bf2/levels" folder, create a "Inishail_Forest" directory and unzip Inishail_Forest.zip into it. (You don't have to unzip the server.zip/client.zip)

I forgot to zip it into a directory so you don't have to create it, fixing that right now and reuploading.

Just to make sure...Inishail_Forest_alpha? or just Inishail_Forest?

thanks...

Re: Need TG'ers suggestions on my map.

I really like this level, nice seperation between the US and Chinese side. Few things though:

Screwed up textures on the sand bag walls:

Large empty area next to the Security HQ, lousy for cover:

Also the north and south farms have very little cover. Oh yeah and you got the north and south frams the wrong way round...

Overall, can't wait to play this properly

One thing, I had to copy the Info folder from another map to get this to show up in the map list, might want to put that in the zip file

Re: Need TG'ers suggestions on my map.

So we are supposed to have a folder inside the Levels named "Inishail_Forest", and a Folder inside that named "Inishail Forest", which contains the client and server?

Re: Need TG'ers suggestions on my map.

Here is my dir structure

mods
-bf2
--Levels
---Inishail_Forest
----Info
-----favouritemap.png
-----gpm_cq_16_menuMap.png
-----gpm_cq_32_menuMap.png
-----gpm_cq_64_menuMap.png
-----Inishail_Forest.desc
-----loadmap.png
-----sp1_16_menuMap.png
----client.zip
----server.zip

The Info folder was from Dalian Plant, just rename the .desc file (delete the AI one) then change this in it with Notepad:

Re: Need TG'ers suggestions on my map.

I uploaded the correct one so just redownload it and unzip the file in /mods/bf2/Levels. You should have (in /levels) a folder called Inishail_Forest with client.zip, server.zip and an "Info" folder.

Sorry for the confusion I kind of screwed up and forgot to include the Info folder and the global folder in the first upload.

And Lorian, yes those sandbags are screwed up (lightmaps issue that I'll fix in final release). Also maybe you misunderstood me but the flag placement isn't what it's actually going to be in the map. What I want are suggestions on where to place the flags. I didn't put details like cover and such into many areas because I don't want to do that until the layout and terrain are final. This version's flags are purely for testing purposes, they're there so I can spawn at them and not have to drive/run everywhere, not necessarily because I want them there for gameplay.

Ok Kilrogg, I finally got it working,

I did take some screenshots however, and I uploaded them to My Gallery so I could also put some comments on them.

Overall, your map looks great, I cant wait to play it, hopefully you win...

Re: Need TG'ers suggestions on my map.

Most of the things you pointed out will be fixed when I do a detail pass over the map. I'm more looking for general feedback/suggestions concerning the layout of the map and in your opinion how would you place the flags/what new flag areas would you create, not technical issues.

For example, imagine there simply isn't flags on the map and it's up to you to place them in a way that will promote tactical maneuvering and some level of symmetry so the map is balanced, that's what I want.

Thanks anyway though

Re: Need TG'ers suggestions on my map.

Heres me initial take on flag layout. I know you say they were only placed as they were for testing purposes but I liked what I saw in some of the locations. So I'll use the in game map here since I would keep several of the flags as they are:

Notes for this layout:

- I like the location of the UCB.
- The Suburbs and Village felt too close to me. I did like the surrounding architecture though...in particular around the Suburbs with the high walls to the south and various buildings all around.
- Since I felt the Village was too close for comfort I suggest moving the flag a bit to the east some. The terrain/architecture can be adjusted to your liking to fit this change. I would like to see the new Village flag maintain close proximity buildings. I also think the ground between the Village and Suburbs should have an area that is somewhat bare of vegetation. Not farm like bare but just not as dense so a flags defenders can get a somewhat decent view of whats coming.
- I like the general location of the current "South Farm" so I kept it. The limited vegetation/architecture will make a nice change of place from the other flags.
- The "North Farm" was too close to the South Farm imo. So in my layout I moved that flag to the east around the bridge and waterfall.
- At 5 flags I felt the map needed another flag in play. 6-7 is a perfect amount imo when it comes to 64 player maps. The 'Power Plant' building hiding over in the south east corner seemed like a nice flag location to me. However in its current location it might be a tad too close to the Security_HQ. So I would suggest moving that building just a tad more south east and add in a few more buildings around the area to create a new flag. See red box. I also like the idea that this flag will be elevated over the other flags in promixity.
- To help in the terrain for the last two flags discussed I suggest extended the forest a bit in the south east there. See the green lines. Where the forest is thick or minimal I would obviously leave up to you.

Well theres my take. I think whatever you decide though it should make for a very nice map. The terrain is interesting and varied. The map is not going to be linear. Overall it should be a very nice infantry map.
