Found out about this on digg.com.
I did not even now about this effect that exists in real life. Someone reproduced it in BF2 and is distributing the effect freely to all tactical minded people.
"Spread this link around to any realism game or mod developers that you know. Forums, direct e-mails, whatever. The more awareness there is of this kind of audio phenomenon in reality, the more likely we'll get these sounds replicated in games."
When I read this I immediatly thought this to be perfect for Tacmod. It will apperently be in Project Reality as well.
Definitely hope you guys will look into this (tacmod devs). Now I'm going to watch the videos of the actual real life sound effect + the video of the bf2 reproduction.
Re: Tacmod Alert: supersonic crack mod made for BF2 bullets.
Awesome. The second I heard that sound, I remembered hearing it on real life videos from the battlefield, where before I hardly noticed it.
The rest of the site is an interesting read too. For example the article about the "infiltration" mod for UT. It has incredibly realistic feautures. An example:
"
We detect the used texture on the surface the bullet hits. Depending on this the possible ricochet angles are determined.
The material and the angle of the impact can increase the chance of allowing a bullet to actually ricochet rather than penetrate.
The distance a bullet is able to 'travel' through the object/wall depends on the caliber, the weapon it was fired from, and energy left.
The further a projectile flies before it hits something, the lower its energy potential in form of velocity is, lowering the maximum penetration value a bit, too.
If a projectile is able to penetrate the object or wall it hits then it will continue its flight path on the other side of it. However its damage and penetration potential will be reduced.
This results in the RC.50 being able to fire through several walls in a row, even very thick ones as in reality. Whereas the shot of most pistols is only able to fire through thin walls or doors and the next wall will stop the bullet from penetrating further."

It's a proof-of-concept, meaning that it showcases the basic principle but would need to be tweaked.
Personally, it sounds exactly like what I've heard passing bullets sound like, and I'd love to see it in a realistic environment like Operation Flashpoint or Armed Assault.
Re: Tacmod Alert: supersonic crack mod made for BF2 bullets.
I also agree with the fact that with proper tweaking and adjustment, that this mod (and effect for future games) would be a great addition. From what I've heard, in the videos, it's a start. Then after watching the actual firefight video (or audio, if you will), I'm greatly anticipating what can be done, with the proper application, so that it might reach the intensity that is heard throughout the video.
Sidenote: I thought it was funny in the RL video, how whenever he fired the MG that it shook the camera from it's position. Assumably it was a mounted gun, and the camera was sitting on the same structure.
Re: Tacmod Alert: supersonic crack mod made for BF2 bullets.
Im more interested in the sounds traveling across the battlefield. If there is a firefight at another point on the map I want to hear it. I think this is a pretty good start.
Re: Tacmod Alert: supersonic crack mod made for BF2 bullets.
Good work on the sounds. I'll always love hearing realisitc sounds on the battlefield, but like Lorian said, that got a little annoying. I would not want to hear that crack and pop after each bullet goes by my head. I hear enough cracks and pops with my X-Fi. I don't need it in game too.
Re: Tacmod Alert: supersonic crack mod made for BF2 bullets.
I think it would be cool to have realistic sounds. And I found the videos good. When can we install the mod? (I assume all you have to do is replace the sound ZIP files and the checksums)

Keep in mind that the video was shot specifically to show off the effect. It is impossible to know at this point how often this effect would occur in a gameplay situation.

This is meant to be introduced in a mod like Project Reality or Tacmod, so you would have no problems at all with punkbuster, no problems with playing on ranked servers.
Re: Tacmod Alert: supersonic crack mod made for BF2 bullets.
Great find. If implemented correctly, I think this would be a fantastic addition to any realistic shooter. The supersonic crack of a bullet passing by is quite loud -- if you ever do pit duty at a rifle range, you'll actually want hearing protection just to deaden this sound.
Hopefully this mod can be tweaked and incorporated into Tac Mod.
EDIT: LOL, I just read the update from Tamlin on dslyecxi's site mentioning rifle range pit duty. Right on.
EDIT #2: I just watched the short PRMM teaser showing off the tweaked "crack mod" in action. VERY nice. Although, I wasn't sure if I was hearing the muzzle blast of an enemy's weapon before or after the bullet's crack. The bullet's crack should come first, and THEN the muzzle blast of the enemy's weapon.
It is not often that I encounter across myself when researching a topic. I found the following in a recent article on the uses of ethnography in virtual environments:
