Giving props to anyone that SLs
Last night was my first time to SL and damn i have no idea how you guys do it when all hell is breaking loose.. My only two orders where to defend the North Cabin and Kill.. If it wasnt for Khaerus actually telling everyone what to do we would of lost that flag in a minute. Quote: "Hey HiTest do you need any advice"
Reply: "Ugh yeah.."
I think i still need to learn the game a bit better before i give an order. I dont even know all the keys to hit too give an order.. Sometimes it is a bit intimidating even joining a squad with some of the best guys on this server, but everyone has been very kind for letting me get killed over and over (man i put those medics to work).
Maybe if i become a supporting member someone could even actually teach the lame duck how to fly??
So here is a big shout out too all those who are patient enough to even listen to me on voip.

HAHA! Nice HiTest! Don't be afraid of it - the best way to get good at it is to just do it. If you're stuck and don't mind hearing advice from squad members - ask for it. Guys like Khaerus are out there and willing to help.
But always remember if you are SL.. then YOU are SL, don't let your squad get away from you.

And, as far as keeping medics busy? I have that market cornered. Keep it up HiTest - you are a good player and fun to play with - all the ingredients necessary to SL.

Re: Giving props to anyone that SLs
Kudos to you and everyone else who tries to SL because it is the only way to learn. I am early in my journey as well and it is great to know that there are very accomplished SL's out there like Mantis, WhiskeySix, Luckyshot, Khaerus (and many more) who are willing to bring the rest of us up to speed with their help and advice. For anybody that wants to complain about a SL...be willing to do it yourself. Keep trying.

Re: Giving props to anyone that SLs
Before I SL'ed - I learned from Mantis, Khaerus and Lucky Shot. SL'ing is a lot more than just barking out orders; It's all about map tactics, class mix, communication (I can't stress this enough) field positioning, overall battle awareness (Where other squads are, what they're doing, etc), and most importantly, staying disciplined and confident. If you show yourself as "weak" or more laid back in leading, it will reflect proportionally onto your SMs and the overall cohesion of the squad, people will care less and tend to do their own thing. SL'ing also puts an added responsibility that you are your SM's frontline and alternative spawn, getting killed at that wrong moment can make or break a game. I'll be the first to admit, I spend more time than I should looking at the tactical map for enemy movement and rapid placement of order markers. (Holding "T" will also bring up the order menu)
Personally, when I SL, I worry less about directly engaging targets unless I have no choice and concentrate more on moving my squad as if I was playing an RTS game, moving individual or cluster of people to places to attack or defend.
In the end, learn from others and practice until you find your little niche.

That was pretty funny on Operation Acorn, you were hiding in a bush, turned around to look at me to see 2 shiny paddles applied to your face

Re: Giving props to anyone that SLs
We'll always encourage guys to become SMs but we will also always help anyone with the games we play here...
As for your first time SLing, you did a fine job... I was glad you stuck it out when the SL roulette wheel fell on you: you gotta learn somehow, and they're guaranteed to be shooting at you while you do... I meant to give you props for the round in my AAR earlier, but here is just as good. It was a fun round.OPS, the bacon is on you.

Re: Giving props to anyone that SLs
The health of the server will always be related to the amount of regulars stepping up and taking leadership positions. As more step up the quality of play and competition will increase. The day when guys like me and Lucky do not have to SL and a bunch of you new guys are leading almost every squad on the server is the day you will experience gameplay that is on par with scrims. We had it this way for quite a while during the high points of poe2 but there is no reason it can't happen again. Any of you guys can make a name for yourself like your favorite SLers...you just have to keep at it and learn as you go.

Re: Giving props to anyone that SLs
I am a regular non supporting member who learned to SL on this server. All I had to do is pay attention to the boys when I wasn't SL and BLAMMO. My squads are full every time I create one. I love playing here, and do enjoy a break from the SL role every now and again. My squads are not always #1 on the server, but if we are not we are close. Eventually it will get to the point that you will not have to tell everyone what to do all the time. They will learn your style and adapt quickly to you. That is when the real fun begins.
I became a SM member after posting this.Last edited by Anvil; 11-19-2007 at 05:46 PM. Reason: claraification
