So tried starting my own a couple times... and was getting pulled in 2 directions. CO orders coming down constantly in my ear, and my squad members telling me those orders were crap, and we should go 'here'.
It was bad. Even when I got in a squad and the SL was giving orders, people were all over the place. Snake Eyes was a travesty. The US capped and lost the Bunker flag 4 or 5 times, and all the other flags once, twice, even three times. There was no defense, no cohesion, and it was just as bad on the UKR side, as I discovered after being teamswitched. I've never seen a US assault that had such a potential to wipe the map, and such an inability to hold one single flag anywhere for more than a minute or two.

Total whack-a-mole. It was thoroughly disappointing. It was one of a series of maps rife with self-serving players running amok, and a few well-meaning but ill-suited squads and COs. It didn't start gelling until Fallen, then it was tolerable.

People know when they are "bad" at something, and we don't know that until they hop in. I also don't want it to sound as if I constantly whore the chopper on a regular basis, because for those that play alongside me, that is not always the case.
There will be times when someone simply doesn't have the experience to keep a vehicle in the air. When we come across a player that is still learning the basics we should ask them politely to try and practice on a less populated server.

A "loner" pilot is simply a loner. He should be reported to the server admins to handle.

I personally believe that the sharing idea is flawed, simply because of the fact that the people not in the limited asset is essentially lone-wolfing because they are without a full complement of ground support squaddies, possibly a squad leader, and near non-existent SL orders; and if any are available, they tend to be extremely vague.
This has come up often in the past. When there are additional players in a limited asset squad, they can do other tasks to support their team. They can keep vehicles/assets repaired, find the high ground and try to spot for other players, play defense at key locations, etc. They don't have to be in a full infantry squad to support their team as long as they are following orders.

If a player isn't willing to play a support role while waiting for their turn, then they should probably move to another squad.

The goal is to try and work together amongst players who are all interested in using a limited vehicle. It will never work perfect every time and we're not saying to allow a full squad of six for a two-seated limited asset. Just try to share the asset instead of always having locked squads where there is no option to share.

While still on the subject of asset sharing, how do you think mobile artillery should be shared? Tomahawks? Destroyer deck guns? (even though attacking the Destroyer is a server infraction, it happens) I couldn't fathom a Snake Eyes squad of 3-4 guys attacking the beach while the deck guns are occupied by their fellow SMs, they are better off with full-time ground squads.
Each situation will have it's time and place. There may be some situations where the CO wants more units in a particular squad. Maybe they don't want certain assets manned at the time. Maybe they want them in control by another squad. One particular scenario can't disqualify the whole thing.

We simply have to figure out an effective way to share assets. Locking squads and restricting others from having a chance isn't the the way to go.

"Support game play in a near-simulation environment. Where the focus of play would not be solely on doing what it takes to win, but doing so utilizing real-world combat strategy and tactics rather than leveraging exploits provided to players by the design of the game engine, regardless of the level of advantage, if any, it gives over the opposing team." -- Tactical Gamer Primer
