Re: quick prone when engaging
What is a really bitter pill to swallow are the times when what you see is someone running, then rolling/dropping to prone--and trying to shoot the avatar as they are doing so--and being killed by them as they seem to begin shooting while still in mid-roll, or even still in the air! There are many times this has happened, and seemed so much a hack, but the people doing it were TG regulars, and above any real suspicion...
Here's where this damnable lag-time in "eye candy", combined with a relatively high ping, can result in a decided lack of WYSIWYG.
The only thing that seems to work (and the more I do it the better it works, generally) is to shoot a half-second or even a second before you normally would as you line up a shot. I've started leading my bullet-targets just slightly with three-round bursts just as I would a jet with AA, or Kilevvri1 with my HEAP-lobbing tank
with some success as well.
As Mantis said in his usual, understated cyborg way, it all depends. In other words, there are a lot of variables to consider like what your weapon is, target movement, terrain and your ping; some of them are fairly true to RL and add to your immersion, some are nothing like RL and then you need to think like a computer.
OMG--I think I just found a unifying theorem on Mantis' obscene KDR!
Anyway, good posts, I'm now thinking even more about variables. Analysis paralysis should be right around the corner! :P

Re: quick prone when engaging
Having a steadily low ping helps alot in tracking and leading your targets, as does fluid FPS. Terrain and elevation not so much so in my experience. I find and I think that the cyborg will concur that the best trick is distraction. Get OPFOR while he thinks he is getting your team-mates and you can both have a laugh
Now if I could learn to kill quickly from 20-30 meters of I would be unstoppable.
Long May the FFTHFF(5th) live in our memories and our teamplay.
