Viewing distance problems
I've had some probs with seeing armor coming into view at distance. This is especially a problem on the Highway to Hell map. Sitting on one of the hills enjoying the lush grass around me having a picnic...when all of a sudden here comes a Sabot round outta nowhere in front of me fired from nothingness. Khaerus has mentioned he has a prob with this at times also. I may have found a solution and will test this theory....I hope. Heres two things to keep in mind.
(KK we all know bout this)
View Distance Scale: This slider determines the amount of visible detail your character can see in the distance. The screenshot comparison below shows the differences at 50% (the minimum), 75% and 100% (the maximum) View Distance settings. While reducing the view distance improves performance due to less scenery being rendered, it is strongly recommended that you do not reduce your view distance below 100%. A reduced view distance can place you at a disadvantage in the game against other players who use 100% view distance, making it harder for you to spot distant players and vehicles. Keep this setting at its maximum and reduce other settings first to improve your performance if you can.
(Read this one carefully..especially the part about coming into view sooner)
Geometry: The Geometry setting controls the Level of Detail (LOD) setting for various objects and landscape in the game. The options are Low, Medium and High and for most intents and purposes there is virtually no difference between the three levels. At higher levels certain objects will appear more detailed, such as rounder boulders and more curved landscape (i.e. more polygons visible). More importantly, at the higher levels vehicles will come into view sooner when far away, as more of their details are shown earlier. Obviously performance is better at the lowest level, but the extent of it depends on your system. For the reason that it may help you detect vehicles sooner, you may want to set this to Medium or High.
Of course i'm at work at the moment, but i'm gonna chek my settings on this. Alot of you don't have these probs. But its prob a good tweak that i've overlooked and not paid attention to.
Just thought I would pass along to those having this same issue.

Re: Viewing distance problems
There's also the "trick" of shifting your in-game gaze so that you use the corners of the monitor to scan the landscape, this extends the view distance a bit.
You can use your in-game peripheral vision to spot a target, then turn back and fire.|TG-12th| fallen

Re: Viewing distance problems
Yep... Lunch time, chicken gizzards and Highway to Hell on the German WW server. My Geo settings were on low for some reason. Set to high and now my picnics are more calmer with the ability to see someone coming before they fire a round off at me....worked well even though my opinion of that server and balance are not good. See u thugs on a real server this evening....(you to Yorkie, ya durty ol dawg)

Re: Viewing distance problems
There are also other strange things I have noticed concerning view distance.
Jeeps and APCs don't seem to render as far out as tanks.
Different locations seem to effect what you can see and if someone at another location can see you. Not sure on the specifics here.
Anyone willing to share info concerning the last one?|TG-12th| Namebot

Re: Viewing distance problems
Yeah, I have view-distance problems all the time in armor fights. (It's true I have way more fun in an infantry fight than sitting in a tin can shooting ducks, but the fact that I can't see much doesn't encourage me to try really hard to get better...)
Anyway, yeah, I've know the tricks and done the sweep scan and all that, and I do alright at tracing the incoming shell that I can see back to it's owner and all that- but it's a pain.
I've never really understood why I've had troubles, because I've had a good cpu (otpy165) and decent gpu (7800GT) and I always thought that I should be able to see better, but whatever. I just this past weekend built my new main rig, though, and it's running a spiffy 8800GT, which seems to be working really well. I'll put it through the paces and see if I can notice any improvement to my armor game, and post anything interesting.OPS, the bacon is on you.

Re: Viewing distance problems
Has to be a geometry thing. I've got mine set to low because my system is old and slow. I'm constantly getting it seems from over the horizon. My view distance is maxed btw.

Re: Viewing distance problems
Set ur geo. to high and the distance at 100%. I really don't think you'll have to many performance issues if u keep ur detail level low, also if you keep ur textures and effects low your performance won't be affected very much at all.

Re: Viewing distance problems
In simplified terms

Now, apply this to height. You said you were on top of the hill? Then guys below you, at max view distance will see you. The reason you didnt see them, was probably because they backed off.

Re: Viewing distance problems
Being on a hill is just a loose term Fox...it happens even on the road in that map. Since i've set my geo. to high the problem is solved. Now I can see who's killing me..hahaha
