Was a total meat grinder of
BF2 Mod Madness on Friday the 25th, release day victory to all.
I found myself getting frustrated, until I realized my problem was not having a "off" night. Rather, it was not knowing the new maps and the new tactics needed to be successful. I did enjoy getting knifed by Pirate and being teabagged by a bunch of others (curses on u all

).
The new maps and the "redux" maps offer some of the best variety of game tactics that I've played to date. Gone are the days of each map being like Port Yalta (BTW we didnt even play the updated ver. of that one did we?) where you have the center flag as the choke point. Greasy had asked me to critique his maps, but all shalt have a go from me.
Melitopol Depot by Dr. Destructo
Pretty cool map, very open with wide lanes of fire. I found a strange glitch in the flag area on the north west point. Near the tall tanks on the west side I believe. When your running along them. My toon was running down the length and it seemed I was bouncing or skipping along the smooth surface. This map seems to almost stalemate to the riverbed with exchanged fire from each side. The destroyables are pretty cool. I wasted rockets on more walls resulting in some giggles and strange looks from the family...lol.

Not a bad map at all. Nice and tight for inf. I really didnt like the "fog" effect in that map to much. To me, it takes away from the beauty of the surrounding textures, it dulls everything out to a point. One thing I noticed is that one team can easily get pinned back into their UCB pretty easy. Then I saw some complaints of ppls firing into the UCB. Alot of that was the approaches coming out of their UCB and the lack of cover. Most of the guys were making it up to the canal wall, but they really couldnt progress much further than that.

Also known as "Saitchos Heaven". I have to commend Greasy here...adding the ladders on the ends of the warehouse docks was shear genius. It gives the opposing team two extra approaches to the roof. Being a big tanker map, about the only safe place for a "AT'd Goat" on foot, is a roof. But, when up on the roof you really gotta watch the ends of the building for them evil ladder climbers. Good placements for cover. Wide open map which enables alot and I mean alot of spotting. A good counter measure for roof activity is a sniper. They had use pinned pretty good at times last night.
Green Acres by Ga-Knomboe Boy.
I think this map will be a favorite for its balance. Especially for troops on foot. The way the land is layed out with the small hill effect provides alot of cover on your approaches. The only thing missing was "Petticoat Junction" (prob not even the theme of the map lol). The vegetation was interesting. I kept thinking "Look at all the cabbage". Green Acres is alot of fun, the flag capture areas are set up nice. This map will require squad tactics to work.

This is prob where I got the most frustrated. Greasy was very keen in the way he layed out the approaches on this map. I did find this map to be very very busy with statics. The dock flag is nuts. The maze of containers and trying to get to the flag thru them can really drive one crazy until they learn the layout. This map is where I keep hearing complaints about not being able to kill someone or they are dieing alot. IMO the prob is 360º threat in tight areas. Not only in your horizontal view, but you have to worry about the vertical also. Especially in the apartments flag. You gotta be ready to do alot of running unless you have a squad leader that can hide well on this map. I found a texture glitch on this map also. Just north of the park area from the apartments along the wall. I was laying down waiting for my squad and I turned towards the apartments and a very small section of the road textures started vibrating in front of me. Prob some kind of "brush glitch" but really not to serious. I suggest ppls watch out for snipers on this map. Because of the narrow approaches it will be claymore heaven. But then again there are a dozen other ways to get in to a flag.
Aces High by Greasy Mullet.
Greasy's ultimate "meat grinder" gift to the world. Playing the US side last night, we kept getting pushed off the island. The hill approach when defended from above is almost impossible to approach. The blackhawks are about the only sure way to get on the island or behind the enemy. But, PLEASE, people stop using the blackhawk as a gun platform to pick off that sniper, because there's an AA pointing at you very near them...haha. I think that was one of the things that irritated me the most. Helo pilots get us in and drop us off...stop hovering for your gunners because your gonna lose. This map like alot of Greasy's maps uses different elevations with statics at the edges for cover and to break up the approaches. One of the gripes I have is the command area flag ( i think thats what its called). We capped that flag and Rockford flew in and landed on the roof in a helo and his peeps took it back very fast and had good cover from that roof. I spun that AA emplacement around on him and he got me very quickly with the mounted MG on the helo.
Was tons of fun. Punkbuster is the devil and I had a blast. The maps are for sure a variety of open fields of fire and some crazy close quarter combat. Correct kit selection will be a must on the maps. So, is this what
BF2 should be?....nah... The Devs proved what
BF2 should be way back in the earlier releases. This just a ongoing expansion of PoE goodness that proves when you and your player fanbase support what your doing, it only gets better with each update. All of the new improvements, at least from my opinion have done nothing more than make for better gameplay. Interesting enough though, I did see a lack of attack helos and little birds on the new maps. IMO some of the maps could use the "ungunned" lil birds as a good fast transport, considering how open the maps where.
Having some wide open maps and destroyable objects kinda started reminding of another mod which I shall not name......thanks for not including a shovel...hahahah
As we all learn the map layouts, there will be some very interesting situations and crazy kills. I really look forward to seeing how different people use approaches and tactics for each flag. I actually had a squadmate comment something last night to the effect of.... "I want my mommy".... might have been Project.
Thanks for reading my opinions....its just my senile side at work.
