If we may have your attention we would like to address a topic that we feel both the player base and admin staff have faltered with. This is going to represent a major correction to our server so please read this over carefully. We will need your help in getting the word out to those who do not read our forum and setting good examples.
Our ruleset states the following:

B) Commanders MUST make their command role their primary activity. A commander should not be engaging in front-line battle if it impedes their ability to command their army and maintain awareness of what each squad is doing. In games where there are less players (i.e. 8v8) then the commander is able to join in the front-line battle.

The general feeling among the admin staff is that for a while now there has been too much focus on whether the commander is fighting. This has built expectations into the community that any yellow text up top is bad and the commander role is one where you sit in your UCB and spot all day. This has produced a negative and apathetic attitude toward the CO position and the commander chair being empty all the time is partly tied into this.(who wants a boring job where you are seen as the annoying spam spotting guy?) As a community we would surely have a failing grade in regards to CO participation in poe2.
Going forward we are going to retool and get things back on track toward the intended design of our
bf2 ruleset when applied to poe2.
The commander position should not be looked at as a fighting or no fighting position. The CO is there to facilitate organization and chain of command. He is the boss and you should be in communication with him to recieve orders and support.
So when the rules say commanding MUST be their top priority, team organization through orders, communications, intel and support is what we are looking for.
Unlike in vanilla
BF2 there are minimal tools in poe2 for the commander to use to support those under his command. The only thing you have are supply drops and smoke arty, the latter of which is not available on every map. With that in mind there is less to occupy a commander and we do not feel constant spotting is what should fill in the gaps.
As long as you are mantaining focus on your primary job a level of "fighting" you feel is achievable is deemed acceptable. This doesn't mean we want commanders running around like a squad member looking for fights the entire round. If you are doing that then obviously commanding is not your priority and you should join a squad. We expect that when our community reads the following from the rules,
A commander should not be engaging in front-line battle if it impedes their ability to command their army and maintain awareness of what each squad is doing.
...that they are mature enough to grasp what we are going for and how much a commander should get involved in the action.
IMPORTANT: We need your help. For our playerbase we would like to see them have more appropriate expectations of their commander. Squad leaders should expect orders and ask for them if they are not receiving them. You may not be receiving any simply because the commander is fine with what you are currently doing...a quick request for new orders will easily clarify that. Communication is mandatory...this can be through text as voip use is not required.(the ability to hear voip is though) Commanders do not have to be super chatty nor do they have to be the perfect tactician every round. Organization, communication, intel and support....that is what we are going for. When you are not getting anything along those lines that is when you have a CO who is not doing his job. Do not concern yourself with what your boss is doing in his free time, instead worry about whether he is running the company.(team)
Summary:
Hopefully you now understand our intent and what we are going for. As for what we will enforce...we will keep things simple.
- Commanders MUST make commanding their top priority.
- Commanders may not use arty/tomahawks.
So how do I know when to report a commander not doing his job to an admin?
Please read the IMPORTANT part again. If the commander is not giving orders and will not communicate with you then you have a commander not doing his job. We ask that our playerbase take efforts to inform in a friendly manner the commanders duty first. As a member of this community it is also your responsibility to help create the environment we wish to achieve. Encourage communication with your CO, find out his gameplan and suggest ideas if you wish. Remember though that he is the boss...you may request a different order but he has the final say. If communication attempts fail and your commander is non responsive or focusing on joining the frontline battle all the time then it is time to get an admin involved. We still have every desire to remove players who do not fulfill their duties as commander.
The rules also say that in small player games(e.g. 8v8) the commander can join the frontline battle?
Yes by all means get into the action as much as your other teammates would. With very small numbers there is very little for the commander to organize. You likely only have one large squad to order around. Combine this with the impact one team member not fighting can have in these small player counts and it would be harmful to have a commander if the CO was not allowed to fight fully with his team.
