For those who heard me on TS about the "lil" accident at work....
Heres a local TV station doing a story on it. The media hounds have been on the stalking all day. We are waiting on the team to get here to access our problem. I'm so tired and sore from scanning everything...bah.
For those who don't know, I work in the radiation equip. industry. We build radiation detection equipment from palm size detectors to huge detectors that will scan a rail car. We had a boo boo Thursday when a machinist accidently cut thru a Cs137 source about 90mCi in size. The source being a ceramic source you can imagine it powdering out and then traveling thru out the building before we knew what happened. Its not so much a health risk we are concerned about (still a concern) its the contamination we have to get rid of, since we house our calibration facilitys for new and used equipment. Our background is kinda shot out at the moment.
Luckily my lab is in another building so I get to continue to burn, freeze and blow up stuff.
Enjoy!.... http://www.ktxs.com/newsroom/newscli...m_accident.wmv

The health aspects are really a minimum risk. The dose recieved from this is not even equal to an xray in comparison. But it made a damn big mess...hahah Worse part is making sure we get it all cleaned up. It affects the calibration of the instruments we produce. It causes higher background readings which pretty much stops us from cal'ing. For instance, our pancake probes that can detect alphas, betas and gammas can not have a background bigger than 50 counts per minute when the probe is cal'd. When I gave up my contaminated shoes, they were thumping along at about 8000 counts per minute. So you can see the prob that has occured. If you did have a particle that just so happen to find someway to attach itself to you, which wouldnt happen it would be several weeks and you might notice a prob such as a blister or sore coming up at the location.
Gotta love my job.....and NO!! I'm one of those that had to stay because of my training...yee haw...

its never exciting where I work... The most excitement we get is a campus wide email from the president of the college explaining how dis-pleased he was that people were stereotyping mexicans, by wearing big hats and drinking Does Equis on Halloween.

Well Goat, I hope that your employer is being very honest and conscientious about this, considering the cancer risks associated with internal contamination. If it was on your shoes, then it was in the air, and if it was in the air...
Fortunately, you're surrounded by detection equipment, but like you say, if they're calibrated to accept the backround as normal and the background is actually hot, they won't detect much.
Why not ask your doctor for some Prussian Blue, just in case? It'll get rid of any that may have got in, plus it has another great side effect: you can scare the bejeebus out of your kids/wife/coworkers by showing them your blue poop...the possibilities for practical jokes are endless!

I think you misunderstood his explanation. The hot lab can no longer calibrate, but Goat's lab (in a different building) can. You don't use instruments from the contaminated lab to measure it.
And Goat clearly knows his risks. If he's not worried, I'm not worried.
It's not like we all live in a squeaky-clean environment, anyway. Our environment is full of natural radiation. Just low-level compared to the inside of reactors.Dude, seriously, WHAT handkerchief?

Strange Monday... Main building is a ghost town..lol..Some of the decons are here. The main guy looks like Paul Sr. from American Chopper. I'm in the lab...........hiding.......being quiet......cuz I have new shoes and i'll be damn if I lose these.. hahaha.
Rumor mill has started.. I'm hearing three days, a month, after thanksgiving, 90 days before people can get back to their workstations. Its been pretty quiet, we are suppose to find out this evening the latest WTF's. All the plants people have in their areas are gonna go bye bye. And me may lose some very high dollar metal latheing mills, which will suck very badly. Had employees wandering around aimlessly this morning. I grabbed my morn coffee from the corner java house, smoked my ciggie and watched people scratch their heads. I need to get out the cam and record this stuff huh.
