    Here's where to hit a tank, PoE2-style

    So, how many AT shots does it really take to kill a tank? To answer that question, I took some tanks and a box o' rockets, and did some destructive testing. I used the standard German Army AT kit with the German Leopard as hapless test subject. Here are the results:

    Number of AT shots to kill a tank (vanilla BF2 results added for comparison):

    Code:
                  Vanilla  PoE2
    Body front       4      5
    Turret front     4      5
    Body side        3      3
    Turret side 4 5 (front part) / 3 (rear part)
    Body rear        2      2
    Turret rear      3      3
    Turret top 2 5 (front part) / 3 (rear part)
    Tracks           2      3
    For the visually inclined, here are some screenshots. Red = 5 hits, Yellow = 3 hits, Green = 2 hits. Phear my mad MS Paint skillz!

    Conclusions: hitting a tank in the face is even more futile in PoE than it is in vanilla BF2. Don't hit any sloped part of the tank (including the front part of the turret). When hitting the rear, don't try to hit the tracks; the rear engine block is more vulnerable and a bigger target.

    Happy shootin'!

    Excellent info. Now I know why I can't seem to kill any tanks with the AT kit.

    Here's some more: when using a tank to shoot at tanks (firing sabot rounds, obviously), the colour codes should be interpreted as:

    Red = 4 hits
    Yellow = 2 hits
    Green = 2 hits

    Due to the unfortunate lack of flying tanks, I haven't tested firing at the top side, but I'm assuming the data for that area is still valid.

    That's cool! Thanks, some good info. Sounds like I need to stop shooting the fronts of tanks!

    It's a lil messed up though b/c late last night I fired 5 Sabot rounds from my tank right into the back of Bommando's tank and it didn't kill him. I checked to see that I was on Sabot and I was. Also, these five tank rounds were shot at about 50m.

    Well, D_FAST replied to this post with a more thorough explanation of the system.

    Interesting stuff.

    I think it should be more like vanilla since there's so many tanks in every map =/

    Maybe, but have you flown the choppers lately? The stuff that does kill tanks does it well.

    The maps that don't have air... well there is an equal number of tanks on each side...

    But yea, infantry vs tank is going to require a more strategic approach to the fight, judging from these diagrams. More smoke and evasion I would guess.

    I really like it. One rear hit for critical ---> =D =D =D

    Tank angles handled reasonably ---> =D =D =D

    Going to have to conduct some testing when I get home. I need more details on how tank angles are calculated.
