CO Fustrations
I have COed quite a few POE games in the past week or so and has a whole have found it a fustrating experience. Not from actual gameplay but from squads. Last night I noticed I had 3 good strong squads lead by TGers so I thought man this should be fun. Unfortunatly the other squads were silent or AWOL.
After one full squad got rolled by 1 armor and 2 infantry I wondered how that could happen, till I noticed it was a squad of 5! snipers and I think a medic. One squad would agree to my order then run to whereever there hearts desired. At first I thought maybe they just happened to be at that location and figured they would pick up the point on their way. No mic either, or just muted me. I even had to hop on TS and get Bom to kick him. Took about 3-5 minutes of my COing time away and when I hopped back I thought "Oh snap, we lost alot of flags".
Of course I need to play the maps more and run them in single player to find the best CPs to get, I am still not used to the maps from a CO perspective so I couldn't contribute a whole lot while COing other than supplies and making sure squads had orders.
But from now on if I join a squad and the SL is not using a mic I am going to leave it and suggest others do the same. Its just fustrating on the CO part.
Also if your going to take the helo, not follow orders and just attack arbitrary flags in the back, please do it well. *sighs* One other thing, make sure there is a jet on the map before making a jet squad. One pubbie I argued with for 2 minutes to get him to join up into another squad since his one man jet squad wasn't a good idea with no jets on the map.

Re: CO Fustrations
There are definitely growing pains with POE and people learning our system. Instead of piling on, I will thank you for taking on the CO position as it does help even when some of the squads aren't bought in. I would also like to thank you for doing the right thing by reporting those who aren't following our rules.
Bommando said something pretty insightful the other night. There are a TON of teamplayers out there trying to get into our server everynight. We need to make sure that we get people who play Teamwork First into our servers and we control the experience. So for taking on the CO Role, and reporting those who aren't following our rules to improve gameplay for the community... + Rep.

Re: CO Fustrations
That's the hard part though. Last few nights the server has been full and I keep getting kicked for a supporting member. Well I have no problem with that except that when I do get back in and my good teamwork oriented squad is full I join the next open squad and it is 5 guys who won't use any form of comms or follow orders and then you get frustrated that you were kicked and not these people. I know it would be impossible without incredible micromanagement from the admins, but it is still annoying.
One other thing to mention, some of the larger armor maps cause squads to get seperated as they lose armor and respawn to bring up new armor. Sometimes this can lead to perceived non cooperation, but I don't think this is what you were referring to.

Re: CO Fustrations
They will get their turn getting kicked as new supporting members enter, but the great thing about TG is that the admins ARE willing to do the work necessary to make it a great server. Tha Khan, your the kind of person we want to play at TG. Having been on the defensive end of your squads, they typically move as a group, well coordinated and definitely flag oriented. I can only suggest a couple things. Log onto our teamspeak and help point out people who are not playing the TG way based on our rules and SOP's which would prevent some of that from happening. THe only other thing I would suggest is if you like the server and want to have the same advantage of other supporting members, become one. It's only like $8 a month and goes to helping pay for our servers.
Azreal's complaint is over the fact that you may have a squad agree to an order but not actually make any attempt to follow it. Or they refuse to defend when they have bleed collapsing any sort of strategy a CO has to win. For example, every time I play Orel, it seems that the side that has the initial 3 flags continues to push stretching their defense out until they pass the enemy who then grabs all the flags behind them. If done correctly, once you have your three flags, you can mass your defense towards the front and pound the enemy as they hit your wall, but too many lack the discipline to do it and continue to attack. One other thing to mention, some of the larger armor maps cause squads to get seperated as they lose armor and respawn to bring up new armor. Sometimes this can lead to perceived non cooperation, but I don't think this is what you were referring to.
Your squad may get stretched as you bring up more armor, but as we both know, it's much more effective when they are relatively close together. As long as your squads are communicating, following orders and attempting to move as a group, your not going to have any trouble at all. In other words, keep doing what your doing.

Re: CO Fustrations
this might seem kind of, "stupid" or something, but here goes.
i was playin' the other night, 64/64 like always, and i hopped into a squad with my 2 [exo] squadmates. the squad ended up wiht 3 [exo] guys and 2 TG guys and one random player. one of the TG guys was squad leader, and he made it a point to follow commanders orders... period. we would rush back and forth around the map defending and attacking all at commanders orders. i only imagine what kind of exchange squad leader had with the CO over some of the disputes but.... POE is a game. there was no reason why our squad leader had to follow bogus orders.... but he did. and WE did , as a squad. we sat at a northern bridge on one of the snow maps while the ENTIRE enemy team's assets were pouring hell down on us. but we held there. just becuase. realism isn't the right word, but that's what it felt like. we had orders, and we proceeded.
imho one of my best bf2+poe+any mod experiences to date.
props to TG for havin' guys like that on board.

Re: CO Fustrations
Here's an idea I'd like to throw out. Not sure if it is technicaly feasible but it certainly would "reign in" the server.
ONLY players who have signed up on our forums and have a BF2 player ID in their profile would be allowed to create squads. The squad kick would still be in place, but you would be "funneled" into a 'real' squad.
This would allow for more effective policing as now the squad leader is personally responsible for policing his own squad. Someone not following orders in your squad? Report them and have them kicked. A guy in your squad flying a helo when you haven't authorized him too? Report him.
If you think about this solution for a while you'd realize it would solve a metric ass-ton of the issues we've been having with pub play lately.
It would also give back some effectiveness to asset squads, as they wouldn't be wasted or overwhelmed. It also leads to being able to hold SL's accountable for their squad members actions, as in a real chain of command situation. I wouldn't have to ask a pubby to stop being a smacktard, I could just get his SL over teamspeak to reprimand him or get him kicked.
I'm sure there are a lot of holes with this idea, but it sounds good without me thinking it ALL the way through. Thoughts?

Re: CO Fustrations
Agree with Whiskey. I think the real way to hit our objectives is to continue to train more SL's and give them the confidence and do the same with CO's. We have an opportunity through the Irregulars training program to help grow CO's and SL's. I typically can't make Saturday trainings to help out, but those that can and have good experience will only make the community and our server stronger by teaching back and giving confidence to the newer members.

Re: CO Fustrations
One thing for CO's to keep in mind if it seems like a squad is not following an order - sometimes squads just start getting harassed by an opfor squad or heli or tank or something, which hangs them up on their trip to their objective.
I've had this happen a lot as a SL, but I try to make a point to quickly hit "V" and say "We're taking enemy fire, it will be a moment before we can proceed.""No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country.
He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."

Re: CO Fustrations
It certainly is frustrating. Ive resolved to never take the CO position unless i do it at the very beginning of a round. Its a safebet that youll have to be on teamspeak for at least the first 20 minutes getting the small squads either kicked or consolidated, and then the rest of the round you can CO and do the TS routine when a new problem crops up.
