Arty direct fire - apology
Hello all. First I want to apologize for using direct fire with the arty.
Here's the situation; I was just playing (~11:30pm EST, 10/02, Rolling Thunder I think the map was?) tonight and came up against the direct fire question relating to artillery. All squads were full, so I created my own squad (I did not lock it), and was alone most of the game. After losing an outpost I was trying to defend, I spawned back at our UCB (I was Ukranian). I found the mobile arty. I initially moved out of the UCB and up hill to get a better vantage point. I called for a spot, but didn't receive any. I then moved nearer the closest outpost that my team was trying to capture. I was uphill from it, and had it in sight.
My side was moving to capture the outpost, my minimap had a bunch of blue dots advancing on the outpost. I started direct fire on the outpost, until friendlies got in close enough that I would endanger them. Germans were putting up a hell of a defense, and after my guys got knocked out, I again fired on the outpost as more blue dots advanced for another assault. I ended up taking out at least two enemy tanks, and some infantry.
A TG player on the opposite team said that artillery was not a direct fire weapon, and I explained that I was supporting an assault, but did they not want me to use it that way? A TG player on my side put in a few "Roger That!"s using the commo rose, which I assumed referred to me. I stopped firing, and let myself get blown up. This way the artillery would respawn back at my main base.
After that I continued playing, but ground pounding (which is what I usually do).
Again, I am sorry about that. I just skimmed a few threads about arty here, and although there was discussion back and forth about this issue, I didn't see any definitive answer regarding direct fire of arty. I was NOT spawn camping, I was supporting my side as they made multiple assaults on the outpost.
Is there a thread / posting that clarifies your policy regarding direct fire using arty?
Whichever, I had another fun time on your server!

Re: Arty direct fire - apology
Welcome to the forums, MadFF. While we do have many rules on our server, we try to keep things as simple as possible but sometimes difficult cases come up.
Insofar as I am aware, direct firing the artillery is perfectly acceptable. The mobile artillery is quickly taken down by all of the anti-armor counters including APC's, tanks, helicopters, fixed wing aircraft, C4, and last but not least infantry AT kits.
Our rules can be found here.A policy of freedom for the individual is the only truly progressive policy. -F.A. Hayek

That message was from a frustrated member of my squad. However, his statement does NOT reflect a rule on the TG POE2 server.

Re: Arty direct fire - apology
Saying that this is a server trying to get as close to reality as possible i dont see anny problem if someone uses a arty weapon against me as a AT gun our anti infantry shelling.
When i served in a arty paratrooper battery we used the 105 mm howitzers as offcours arty ( thats what they are build for in the first place ;D) , but we also used them as direct fire instruments against armor by aiming true the barrel before you pump your shell in it. So it is not uncommon to use arty as a DF weapon against infa our a AT gun.
Same goes for AA guns , ppl use them too against armor and infa , remember the Germans in WW2 , there best AT gun was a gun that was originaly build as a 88 mm FLAK gun .
In a armed conflict u use the tools that you have in the way that best fit the situation at that time.
When you offcourse have a good arty team at your side , then you better use it as arty , because you will gain allot more advantage from it to decide the outcome of the battle .

PS; Mortars that is what we need in this game ;DDD Nothing so nice as a infantery squad that charges with a moving mortar fire to back them up ;DDD***"It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit."***

Re: Arty direct fire - apology
Thanks for the replies. As I said, I was not spawn camping, I was supporting my side assaulting an outpost.
I jumped into the arty in the first place because I haven't yet used it "correctly". One of these times I will get it together with some players and spot and fire the arty.
Semi- off topic, as to the AA being used as anti-infantry, from my reading that has always been common. I have not been in the military, but I have read a bit of military history. Especially in Korea, the halftracks with Quad-.50s mounted were used extensively against infantry. AA should be devasting against infantry.... I can't imagine attacking mobile AA on foot in real life!
See you on the BattleField!

Re: Arty direct fire - apology
Oh yes you do ;D
Blow a MILAN missile in his behind , bye bye AA ;D I dont know if regular units draging MILAN ( and simmular weapons) with them on foot. But where i served it got dropped before the personal drop our just at the end of a drop our they dropped it out of a seperate C-130 that only containd material.
I like it more when they drop the jeeps , howitzers , heavy mortars etc before i need to jump.I never liked the idea of a jeep drop with a mailfunction on his chutes above my head ;DDD
We had a arty piece that went down once from under our chopper , the line broke! We had to DIG it out lol ;-)

Re: Arty direct fire - apology
Hey, MadFF,
That was me, I felt certain that arty wasn't supposed to be used as a direct fire weapon, but I stand corrected and apologize to you. Thanks for clarifying things and giving me the chance to sort things out.
