Finally, AA missles work!
Last nite was only my second chance to really try out the new patch since it came out. I was most interested in trying out the AA missles since they reworked the code in the last patch. It's been over a year since BF2 was released but finally, the AA missles have been fixed. Unfortunately, it was a group of modders instead of DICE that got it working. I sat in the Ukraine SA-13 on Highway to Hell and constantly shot down jets and helos, but primarily jets. I racked up 32 kills (33-1 infantry kill) with only 4 deaths. And that's pretty damn good since the SA-13 does not even have flares. Usually, Highway to Hell is a nightmare map for the armor since it is wide open and air asset heavy. Now you can keep the skies clear without having to depend upon pilots. It's been a long time coming, but this has finally brought balance to the air vs ground war. Major props to the POE2 development team.

Re: Finally, AA missles work!
Yeah, I got a screenie of 2 missles on tacmod doing corkscrews. Pretty hilarious distractions. One even went around the tower I was on a circle a few times and smashed into one of the sides.

Re: Finally, AA missles work!
Since the patch, using the portable AA kit has proven much less usefule to me. And I use that kit quite alot.
The choppers/planes can now constantly drop flares, so I feel getting a hit or not is now a matter of pure luck. If you are lucky the rocket will hit through the flares. Gone is are the days of timing to beat the flares, just fire and hope. I definitely feel the patch disabled AA (at least the stinger kit, didn't try the AA vehicle) considerably. Add that to the time it takes for an infantry to get to an aa kit safely, to get it to a useful spot, to look for a supply guy when you run out of your few missiles.... To be frank, I just don't really play the air heavy maps. I just go camp out with an AA missile, and (hopefully) a REALLY bored support guy. Now I know lots of people don't like to hear bad things about poe and are ready to sort of flame me now, but hard work is not the same as quality. Keep in mind my comment is NOT about the aa vehicle. Also thank you bane for teaching me some planes seem to have no flares. --------- To gahlas: finally solved the mystery rocket enigma!

Re: Finally, AA missles work!
Hey, Al. Just go grab the mobile AA and have some fun. The pickup AA kits are way more limited than the vehicles. One thing I have noticed is that if you fire when you get a lock, you are most likely to hit your target. Only a few times have I noticed a missle veering off to follow a flare after lock. The days of getting a lock only to see the missle fly right by the target (without flares being dropped) is over. I have yet to see a missle miss on lock even at close range or difficult angles. Jets and the Eurochopter take two hits to down. The Hind is a tougher customer and take about 3 or 4 hits. There should be no excuse to have the mobile AA sitting unused anymore.

Re: Finally, AA missles work!
you may be right about the angles, I've hit planes as they flew right over me, so that is about a 90% angle wich is good. The flares aren't 100% percent effective as in vanilla. I'll keep at it, thanks for the pointers.

Re: Finally, AA missles work!
The flares are still the same, it's just that the missles are more effective. The pilots are used to missles being useless so they have not changed their habits. Where before you could hear the lock tone and pretty much ignore it or do some fancy manuever to shake the missle, that is no longer possible. The flare must come between the plane and the missle for it to be most effective. So if the pilot does not know the location of the launcher, it's gonna be real hard to use the counter-measures. The armor always had the same problem when breaking missle lock, so turnabout is fair play. Pilots either need to avoid the area where the AA launcher is or make it a priority to destroy it, and that's the way it should be.

Think of this the next time you come up against a Hind: http://spluch.blogspot.com/2007/05/h...opter-fly.html

Thats some photo shop from what I can tell. The Audio sounds like the main rotor blades spinning and you can hear the beat frequency as well. I would have to run it through a spectrum analyizer to know for sure.

Re: Finally, AA missles work!
LoLs at the pitch controlled blades comment. I wonder how many people bought that explanation...
It's just the shutter speed of the camera synchronized with the RPM of the engine to catch the rotor blades in (roughly) the same position with each frame. Funny looking, but nothing too special - no complicated photoshopping required and certainly no anti-gravity chopper mechanics.

Re: Finally, AA missles work!
lol funny video, even funnier are the comments and the ignorance of people thinking the engines of those choppers can produce thrust vectoring enough to allow it to fly like that.

1.) You can hear the spinning of the blades. 2.) The blades are tilted upward indicating centrifugal force is acting on them. If they wern't spinning, they would be sagging. 3.) The helicopter stops fully to hover and even gain altitude, not possible with the explination given of "gracefully losing altitude." 4.) Helicopters don't have thrust vectoring. 5.) If the Russians could make a helicopter fly without spinning its rotors, America would have had this technology 50 years ago! (I apologize for #5) |
