    Re: Squad Leading

I'm hardly the one to give advice on SL skills, but I've played in your squad from time to time and you are certainly better than most.

Having said that, I'll made some general comments that apply to any SL, not necessarily based on anything I've seen you do or not do. IMHO, the most important thing for any SL is constant communication with his squad. VOIP is a wonderful thing. Use it. Don't just tell your squad where you want them to go, tell them how you want them to get there. There is nothing that bothers me more than being in a squad where nobody talks. That is especially true if the SL is silent most of the time. Communicate, communicate, communicate--whether it is through the in-game chat, markers, or VOIP. Don't let the squad members be in doubt about what they are supposed to be doing.

Last, remember the importance of defense. All too often I see SLs running from one flag to another, even when their team has the opponents bleeding. There is nothing wrong (and a lot right) with digging in at a flag and holding it for most of the round.

Again, these are general observations. I can't say they necessarily apply more to you than others, I just don't remember the times you have been my SL. By the way, ++++rep for asking.

The time for calm and rational discussion has passed. Now is the time for senseless bickering.

    Re: Squad Leading

Hmm... you were my SL for a bit last night, but I wasn't really thinking about it too much. I think you were doing all of the important things.

Oh ya, I had you leading on Carpathian. I'll offer a comment based on that. Don't automatically take CO commands. When we had an order to attack lumbermill, we were mostly unable to move to follow that command, but you still accepted it from the CO. Give the CO feedback about the situation on the ground when you get orders which you think will be difficult to follow. If the CO insists that the order is good, then demand that your squad members break off combat and follow you immediately.

If you accept an order and don't follow it, the CO will have no idea what is happening.

In the case we had last night, East Cabin was being attacked repeatedly and Lumbermill was well defended. We could clearly see from the ground that moving to Lumbermill would be a bad choice UNLESS there were other squads moving at the same time.

On thing I have noticed is most of the time it is a TG guy leading the squads. So if I see a TG guy I will always go for him first just in case he is the SL.

So remove that TG tag! I have a plan to change my name each week... may help my K/D ratio.

That's an interesting idea, especially for guys like Mantis or Beatnik who SL often. I know Saturday during some awesome POE2 rounds at the LAN center, we heard over and over "Get Mantis! He's still out there!"

I love squad leading, but one thing I know I don't do enough of, like someone said earlier, is telling the squad "how" to execute a plan. A SL should not only to decide on an objective, especially if you don't have a CO, but also consider the way your squad should implement that plan. I'm going to make that a priority for myself and maybe "practice" SLing more often. The only way we're going to become great SL's is through practice, naturally, and threads like these. Good idea and +rep!
    I heart TG.

As long as your not aiming for the gays first, I'm fine with that! Rofl good one.

Very true. I for one hate seeing a very dangerous plains to cross in front of me as a SL just generically says attack across this field...
Then the whole squad gets picked up 1 by 1.
Always give your squad a plan/objective, which is preferably NOT the generic flag.

Zarfax I've seen you SL on pr, I'll make sure to join up sometime. Haven't been in your squad yet.

    Re: Squad Leading

Here's another "atta boy" to all you guys who squad lead regulary. It is harder to do well than it would seem, and a good SL makes all the difference in enjoying the round.

I still consider myself a "better than nothing" squad lead, but I am forcing myself to step up once in a while, like when I can't find a squad with a SL giving orders. Makes the game a bit more stressfull, but hey that's how you learn right!

    Re: Squad Leading

I would like to second what Nerd said. I thought I was better than nothing, but was having some difficulty this last week when good SLs left and I was stuck holding the bag. In the past, I would leave the squad and come back, but I have been trying. I am too gung ho I guess, as I am used to charging in. I did OK on 16 player Fallen, but hey, we took a flag and just defended the whole time. Playing on squads like MoreGooder, Mantis, Lucky, Santa, etc. is a lot different than playing on mine : ) So, thanks to those that take SL and do it well, as that is why I am playing on POE. Hope to do better in the future.

    Re: Squad Leading

The only thing I can truly suggest is to get in the saddle. I learned from experience, not from getting into the great SL's squads (There was NEVER room) but in fact identifying what they did to beat me. So you figure out what works, because it worked against you, and figure out 1) how to beat it, and 2) how to attack using that strategy. Do it enough times and your a damn good SL.

Also, there are a ton of great tips in the Tactical Wiki... http://www.tacticalgamer.com/wiki/in.../Squad_leading
