Re: Help for a noob sniper
The VSS is simply the UKR specops gun (AS Val) with a scope and smaller clip (10 instead of 20). IMO, it's more of a medium range weapon and can be used w/ bursts instead of single shot...

Re: Help for a noob sniper
Use the SVD and practice.
- there is a small amount of bullet drop, so you need to learn the right amount of compensation
- be patient and find good locations
- as soon as you start shooting, good players will be determining your location, so don't keep taking pot shots - get the kill(s) quickly and then go silent and/or movePeace through fear... since 1947!

Re: Help for a noob sniper
oh yeah - also, never shoot at someone moving perpendicular to you. The hit detection in BF2 is such that you'll only be able to reliably hit people running directly at or directly away from you.

Re: Help for a noob sniper
With how accurate the weapons are in POE, I would recommend a different kit. Effective snipers are few and far between as most lone wolf and lack the ability to really impact the battlefield. They don't take flags and generally don't hold them. Truly what I would recommend is to find your way into a TG squad and learn the kits that make a squad strong. I have always found it to be more rewarding.
Sniper tips though... Fire from cover, after you get a kill be prepared to move.

Resist the temptation to climb the watertower or other high buildings, because I will knife you.

Re: Help for a noob sniper
The best snipers in my opinion spot for their squad. I think they are extremely important and undervalued especially on large maps. It makes it a heck of a lot easier for your squad mates/teammates to chase down those little red dots.
The SVD is the third best sniper kit in the game behind the NTW-20 and the German G-82 anti material rifles. One shot to the head or two to the body and your enemy is done. The VSS doesn’t have the same range and you are better off leaving that kit alone.
If you’re sniping with the German MSG-90 you’ll notice a drop in accuracy. It’s definitely frustrating and if you’re trying to be a better sniper that is not the gun to use.
I also don’t recommend shooting anyone running perpendicular to you. But if you do feel the need I think a sniper rifle is your best shot at getting a kill. You just need to lead your victim a few pixels in the direction he is running…but don’t miss.
Don't forget claymores are your best friend. There is nothing more gratifying than stopping those pesky knifers. Even if you get knifed, which is par for the course if you snipe, they can still run into your claymore. It makes any knifer stop giggling.Last edited by Sumluv59; 04-12-2007 at 03:16 PM.

Burning spies is cool.

Re: Help for a noob sniper
I would take Lucky's advice, and try other kits - I used to snipe religiously, and while I made plenty of enemies, which is a very worthwhile goal, it was hard(er) to feel a part of the squad/team. Maybe some people are made for sniping: convicted felon, loner, find themselves throwing poo at neighbors, etc.
Has anyone felt they performed better with a sniper kit - isn't it black and white, you can either hit stuff or you can't?

Re: Help for a noob sniper
Without UAV and such other lame "features", spotting is once again important. Not for points, but to help your team! When you spot, you can really make a huge difference to let your team know where an attack is going to come from. I love seeing all the people spotting (Not spam spotting)!
Last night while playing I mixed up my kits a lot but spent a little time with the sniper class. I was in a squad and tried to hang back a ways from them at an angle so that I could pick off attackers trying to over take my squads position. I felt like I was a sniper off on my own yet was a part of my sqaud and helped keep them alive.
So really how you play is up to you, but try to think outside the box and dont just go camp a hill someplace. Help your squad, be smart, and have fun.

Re: Help for a noob sniper
Because of the map layouts and fog distances, sniper doesn't really have an ability to outclass other kits. For example, the UKR Assault rifle (VEPR) can accurately kill at the edge of the draw-distance, so having the sniper's big scope doesn't really buy you all that much. Add to that the fact that sniper rifles (not the pickup sniper rifles) have about the same damage as the other rifles, and you don't get much advantage.
